mekpro··on Why I stopped using an external monitor
To me, the real benefit of an external monitor is not the display size, but the height and position. Compared to a laptop-on-table setup, an external display allows the screen to be positioned higher to match the height of the eyes, while also keeping the keyboard lower to match the height of the arms. This makes working for extended periods more comfortable and reduces shoulder and neck pain.

When I cannot afford an external display, I have found that using a laptop stand and an external keyboard can help a lot.

mekpro··on Intel Publishes Fast AVX-512 Sorting Library, 10~17x Faster Sorts in NumPy
The ironic part is the latest Intel CPU no longer support AVX-512 and AMD now provide better AVX-512 CPU implementation in Zen 4.

mekpro··on Unity to acquire Parsec for $320M
Congratulations to parsec team!. The remote desktop experience on Parsec is smooth and close to 60fps. I can even play games from my PC over 4G network. This is a killer solution for remote desktop.
mekpro··on Benchmarking division and libdivide on Apple M1 and Intel AVX512
TLDR The M1 is 10x faster than the Xeon at 64 bit divides. It’s…just wow.
mekpro··on Linux Desktop on Apple Silicon/M1 in Practice
A bit slower than GTX 1050 mobile
mekpro··on Why Johnny Won't Upgrade
Windows 10 update frequently shipped with broken side-effect, sometime its WSL, sometime Docker, so on. My last strow is the last month update which made Starcraft II broken.
mekpro··on Why Apple ditched PowerPC, and what it says about Apple ditching Intel
Blaming Moore's Law is not fair since Apple, AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, HiSilicon,... can deliver reasonable improvement in these 3 years while only Intel is stagnant.
mekpro··on X
Why not just use x1, x2, ... Problem solved.

mekpro··on Buy a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
A step up to A72 cores while retaining the same price is huge. Kudo to the Raspberry Pi team.

mekpro··on Beluga whales adopt lost narwhal in St. Lawrence River

mekpro··on Unexpected benefit with Ryzen – reducing power for build server
This is to be expected. Since 180Watt is not the default TDP of Ryzen 2700X, the default TDP is 105Watt. https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-2700x

Which mean the CPU is already shipped with the reasonable performance/watt TDP and over-TDP it will give diminish return in performance gain.

However, It would be interesting to see benchmark in much lower TDP than 105Watt and see how far the TDP can go down before big drop in performance.

mekpro··on Ask HN: How to become a remote contractor?

mekpro··on Bitcoin May Split Many Times in 2018
If you hold the the private key of the coin, simply download the forked coin client and sync with the old key. The money should automatically appeared.

The story is more out of control if you hold the money in the trader. Since you had to rely on the trader to enable support for that new coin, which may happen later or not happen at all.

mekpro··on XPS 13 developer edition 7th generation available
I'm totally on the same boat! Failed XPS 15 9550 and migrated to ThinkPad X1 5th gen. Now perfectly happy with the latter.

The XPS had failed with ridiculous reason, I try to access the BIOS/UEFI with some key while boot up. After some tries, the machine never boot again. It founds that by pushing F8 in the wrong timing/combination while booting can cause the machine to brick forever. This is beyond the expectation of how any computer should work !

mekpro··on LG Develops ‘Nano IPS’ LCD, Unveils 32“ 4K Display with DCI-P3, HDR600, TB3
The situation in the phone market is much better than full size monitor market. Without the market size and scale to support, its hard for LED monitor to improve the yield and sell in more competitive price.
mekpro··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates

mekpro··on Laptop security: Apple vs. [Insert name here]
If remote wipe is not possible in Linux, Maybe we also need the feature to automatically "destroy all data" when the laptop hadnt been logged in for too long.
mekpro··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
MacBook had much faster Processor, Chromebook Pixel use UltraLow Voltage CPU which tends to have much lower TDP and much less sustained clock. In this case 2.2GHz for Chromebook vs 2.7Ghz for MacBook.
mekpro··on Ask HN: What is HN reading?
Capital in the Twenty-First Century. A truly outstanding economic research of the age. This book answer how and why inequality of wealth become part of our society and will continue to be... if we failed to change.

One more impressive thing about this book is the massive amount of data used to proof the writer's thesis. He find and represent data of wealth from several countries over 200 years and present it neatly to support his idea. He also open those data for others to proof it as well.

mekpro··on Poll: What is your #1 productivity killer?
Not in the list, but task switching is my #1 productivity killer. It's ten times harder to work three projects at the same time than one.
mekpro··on Apple Teams Up With IBM for Enterprise Push
I'm not sure this is a good idea for Apple which its root were always based on Consumer product. Steve Jobs hated Enterprise Market. Its fair to believe that Enterprise is an opposite site of Consumer. Their principle of requirement, design or even purchasing decision are very different. You can't please everyone. I wonder how will next i-Devices look like if they are trying to please enterprise rather than the consumer.
mekpro··on Ask HN: What is your development setup?
ThinkPad X230 * Ubuntu * Python, Java, JavaScript * git * VIM, Android Studio
mekpro··on Decoding Vibrations From Nearby Keyboards With Mobile Phone Accelerometers [pdf]
Can this research be improved to turn all dumb keyboard into wireless one ? I'm not sure in technical limitation on how much this can be improved.
mekpro··on Newell's history of porting Doom to Windows to show it can be a gaming platform
Although DOOM95 was not a success, it doesn't mean that what Newell believe was wrong. Also it's pretty clear that many people buy/use computer for solely entertainment purpose and that's why consoles sold.
mekpro··on A Close Look at Dark Souls’ Ingenious Difficulty
I found that most of the fun in this game can be easily destroyed by FAQs and Youtube. I myself get very frustrated by Sen Fortress's Bonfire that i can't resist the urge to get an answer from wiki. After read this, I find myself regretted because i had missed the crucial experience of this game. Explore or dead !

I wish I could forget everything about this game so that I can innocently play it from the start again.
