This is definitely a problem worth solving, and I am glad these guys are doing it. I've worked with designers who hated doing, and developers are not fond of it too. As it improves, it has lots of potential.

Great start guys!

Good news is that the app works entirely on your machine locally - no video data ever leaves your computer so hopefully that will alleviate some of your concern. :)

Hi rbn, possibly it's a light. Would you please do us a favor and send us a video of your lighting - that would help us improve? Also, please make sure that your palm is at least 1 feet away so as to completely visible by webcam.

@alttab - thanks for your view point. We meant to say that we will add enough utility overtime. Interestingly enough 80% of our downloads are also non-us so may be it is a wide spread problem. Thx!

Yes, we've done quite a bit of work since the initial launch just on that. It should be WAY better. Please try and let us know.

Great idea. :-)
mehuln··on Show HN: Flutter HP Redesign + Play/Pause Spotify, WMP via Gesture on Windows7
James. You can easily turn it off thru menu bar icon when not using it.

In our tests it results on ~10-20% additional drain. We hope to make utility high enough so that it doesn't matter.

mehuln··on Show HN: Flutter HP Redesign + Play/Pause Spotify, WMP via Gesture on Windows7
Thanks for the kind feedback. We have changed it so that on Mac it launch on start is optional. You can also turn it off from top menu bar icon if you have older version. If you have really old version, then download the latest as it is much improved in terms of false positives!

We hope you give us a try after we add few more gestures!

We just redesigned our Home Page & launched Windows (7) version of our app to join the mac version. Yes, we are aware that everyone wants to a new gesture. It is being tested right now and will be available soon. In the meantime, please send us your feedback on HP as well as Windows App. Thanks in advance from FlutterTeam.

swang - thx for trying it out. We do get false positives and are working hard to make it even more robust. Did you download from app store or our website? Try the version from website, it has some improvements that are yet to reach the app store.

Thank You!

Thanks for your feedback. Please try it and let us know!
mehuln··on Play/Pause VLC & Quicktime using Flutter - Gestures via Webcam (YC W12)
Great question. As you correctly noticed, we use about 3-30% CPU and 30% only when gesture occurs, so on average it uses about 5% CPU - less than your average browser. Hence, our implications should not be any diff. Thanks for point it out, we will certainly keep an eye on it.
mehuln··on Play/Pause VLC & Quicktime using Flutter - Gestures via Webcam (YC W12)
You're right - our website not the greatest thing in the world. We are working it too... please be patient as we're still a small team.

Yes, it works on Mac and Windows version will come soon!

mehuln··on Play/Pause VLC & Quicktime using Flutter - Gestures via Webcam (YC W12)
Great questions. It works the best from 1-6 feet, so no you don't have to be right in-front of your comp.

The latest version has improved false positive rate where we got one every few hours.

Kinect is overkill for accuracy at this point, so that will not matter.

Lastly, yes camera is on, but app runs locally so no video data ever leaves your computer. Only server component is usual analytics logging.

mehuln··on Play/Pause VLC & Quicktime using Flutter - Gestures via Webcam (YC W12)
You're right about that first version was a bit sensitive. Some backend goodies are part of this version so false positive rates should've gone down. Try the new version and see if you feel any improvements.

Also, yes, camera is on all the time but you can turn of camera by clicking on Flutter icon and picking that option.

Lastly, this app runs entirely on local machine. It does not record or stream video data - it detects gestures locally in real time, so no video data ever leaves your machine.

Hope it helps!! :)

Great point. Apologies for missing that. Good news is that Windows version is in the works too!
mehuln··on Sergey Brin: Facebook and Apple a threat to Internet freedom
He may have a valid point to certain extent regarding a controlling nature of those two firms, but if I look at last 10 years, I see more innovation out of Apple than Google, and even in it's controlled way Apple through iOS has driven more innovation (Instagram?)

Some of you may be a fan of Apple but I do not think one can deny the quality of innovation that has come from Apple vs. lack there from Google. I am talking about innovation that change the way we live.

Garry Tan is a partner and a rockstar. He's given a plenty of amazing pointers and w/o him (and other partners) we would've gotten plenty of other things wrong.

That said, Garry can guide us. His job isn't do design for us... that onus is still no us! Hence, please blame us for poor design.;-)

Hi Guys, we just do play/pause right now and only on iTunes and Spotify. It only works on Mac for now too. Yes, we will be adding support for more apps/gestures/windows in near future.

We will also communicate things more clearly when we implement our own facelift. ;-) Thanks for your patience with us in the meantime!

mehuln··on YC Facelift: Flutter
We do not feel this is disrespectful at all. In fact, we love it. Even Kyro is our user, and we love his passion for Flutter.

A/B testing is something that we will add in near future, but when product is still in alpha, we have to continue to focus on improving it.
