mehukatti··on Dear hosters, you are selling wood, not furniture
This blog post really resonates with me. I'm originally one of those "server guys" who had 20 years of experience with Linux and hosting all kinds of software (my last gig was running OpenStack). I was also pretty deep in Red Hat ecosystem and had their highest certification (RHCA). But sadly in my EU country these server oriented tech roles kind of dried out around 10 years ago and the rest were outsourced to Indian companies. That's why I work at AWS nowadays.
mehukatti··on LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees
My LinkedIn feed is pretty good, mostly relevant (semi-)technical content that helps me to stay up to date with the industry. However, I have spent quite a lot of time to make it like that by unfollowing people who post or like shit content.
mehukatti··on A Swedish startup’s bid to build a green rival to AWS
What happened to Gaia-X, the previous European cloud project? If I recall correctly, its main objective was not to build new data centers but rather to develop an overlay on top of the existing European VPS providers.
mehukatti··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
A couple of talking points come to mind:

The linked blog post mentions October 2021, while in December 2021 AWS lowered pricing for CloudFront where the first terabyte out to internet is now completely free:

https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2021/11/aws-price...

For larger use cases most cloud providers have custom or private pricing options available. For example in CloudFront pricing page AWS publicly states that "Custom discounted pricing is available for customers willing to commit to a minimum of 10 TB of data transfer per month for 12 months or longer."

I have noted that most of the blog posts like the one linked above talk about migrating workloads around for savings of tens or hundreds of dollars while focusing on low level IaaS (VMs), and completely ignore the benefits of leveraging cloud services, APIs and related software ecosystems instead of DIY.

mehukatti··on AWS Tools Suck
I'm quite surprised at this blog post, since AWS has popular tools like CDK that make creating cloud resources developer friendly, while leveraging familiar programming languages and high level constructs. A lot of the partner and 3rd party options are more targeted (imo) for supporting multi-cloud use case with a unified tool and to provide an alternative to AWS native tooling.

Disclaimer: I work at Amazon.

mehukatti··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
Growing fast into high double digit headcount. But we neither have software engineers in Helsinki - just Account Managers, TAMs, Solutions Architects, etc. AFAIK the closest location for SDEs is Berlin. Anyhow, thanks for noting the problem on that page, just created an internal ticket to get that fixed!
mehukatti··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
Google, Amazon and Microsoft all have offices in Helsinki and are hiring a lot for their cloud businesses. For example we here at AWS consistently have ~10-20 positions open in our new Helsinki downtown office.
