meh2frdf··on Reading Aloud to Young Children Has Benefits for Behavior and Attention
Ha spoken like a real parent!
meh2frdf··on DeepMind Hype vs. Reality
AGI is so far off it’s not worth factoring into the question at this time.

Demis has history of over hyping tech, however a collection of smart people and massive backing from google, joined together to work on interesting problems, sounds a better place to work than most!

meh2frdf··on TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
Netflix is making a loss, they are burning investment money trying to stake out their territory, that won’t last, expect increases in costs or ads in the future.
meh2frdf··on The Declining Value of a CS Master's Degree (2013)
You are correct, and as a experienced hiring manager I’ve seen little evidence that a masters adds anything to the effectiveness of an engineer. The only time it will affect my hiring decision is it a masters in CS but their batchelors was non CS, ans it’s basically a conversion, having said that I have a personal contact who did this and from a good uni, the masters really taught him very little.
meh2frdf··on The 5 Deep Learning Frameworks You Should Know
Why should I know them. Your title presumed much!
meh2frdf··on Why writing a linked list in Rusts is basically impossible
Aaaaaand there goes me interest in learning rust ;)

The author is quite open about his lack of expertise with Rust, would be good for someone more knowledgeable to explain the right approach. Also does the benefits actually outweight the cost?

meh2frdf··on Solid aims to radically change the way web applications work
The W3C docs are very developer unfriendly additionaly there is a significant issue with OWA vs the default mindset of CWA. Also OWL and RFFS not being the type of schema a dev is used to and until very recently no option to actually verify and control the shape of the data (there is SHACL now). Also no sensible examples of using the stack, using FOAF to publish open data isn’t the job for most devs! Finally the rubbish tooling, clunky DBs and only viable option is Java makes the whole thing a quagmire... however it has tons of value if you can get past all that friction, Enterprise Linked Data is an order of magnitude better than alternatives.
meh2frdf··on Solid aims to radically change the way web applications work
Hmm ipfs has many issues for solving that problem, and the whole filecoin nonsense adds an additional layer of problems.
meh2frdf··on Why I'm excited about Crystal in 2018
Do does the green thread model support multiple cores?

If not, then that’s a major thing that should be declared upfront.

meh2frdf··on Decentralized Blockchain-Based Electronic Marketplaces
Hmm or how much they can out price competitors, which has largely been amazon approach, further more they keep expanding yo new markets!
meh2frdf··on Google and Facebook unveil big investments in France
10 million over 5 years, not sure that qualifies as big?
meh2frdf··on Ten years in, nobody has come up with a use for blockchain
There are plenty of proposals, and very little delivered.
meh2frdf··on Karnaugh map
Likewise, one of the most satisfying books/subjects at uni! Thanks for giving me the name, I had wanted to revisit the book but forgot the name and author.
meh2frdf··on Most Powerful GPU Ever Is Out Now
Silly title!
meh2frdf··on Are “landscrapers” the new skyscrapers?
It’s just a normal looking building for that area, or am I missing something?
meh2frdf··on Tim Berners-Lee on the future of the web: 'The system is failing'
From being Tim?
meh2frdf··on London’s exodus offers a stark warning: your culture is at risk
I read it, nearly the entire thing is junk. Feel free to waste your time with it, but it's a very lazy article with an agenda, northern academics writing about a London the know little about.
meh2frdf··on London’s exodus offers a stark warning: your culture is at risk
Crap article, not sure what it's doing in HN?
meh2frdf··on Frankfurt Is the Big Winner in Battle for Brexit Bankers
So the EU will offer will only free trade deals to those not in the European continent, that sounds even worse, sounds like trying to force people into their cartel.
meh2frdf··on The Limitations of Deep Learning
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see that with 'deep learning' we have answered/solved any of the philosophical problems of AI that existed 25 years ago (stopped paying attention about then).

Yes we have engineered better NN implementations and have more compute power, and thus can solve a broader set of engineering problems with this tool, but is that it?

meh2frdf··on The Limitations of Deep Learning
Wat?
meh2frdf··on Frankfurt Is the Big Winner in Battle for Brexit Bankers
And the uk is asking to be treated like Canada or Japan, which have free trade agreements. We would like some of that cake please, it was fun at the EU party, but we don't think it's working out for us (nor for some others, but they are too scared to say) and we would like to get on with doing things independently thanks.
meh2frdf··on Frankfurt Is the Big Winner in Battle for Brexit Bankers
Why not?
meh2frdf··on Frankfurt Is the Big Winner in Battle for Brexit Bankers
A free trade agreement does not require being in the EU. So of course they want one. The EU saying no is there way of punishing the UK, and discouraging any other nations from leaving. Hmmm. Freedom of choice indeed.
meh2frdf··on Frankfurt Is the Big Winner in Battle for Brexit Bankers
So it was fine for Italy to join?
meh2frdf··on Ask HN: Are UML diagrams still used today?
Likewise, I create uml diagrams keeping them as standard as i can, but do not expect anyone else to know all the nuances of UML.

It amazes me the amount of time I see convoluted discussions when a simple diagram would make it so much simpler and explicit.

meh2frdf··on Comma.ai launches an $88 universal car interface called Panda
Hmmm not seen many cars with radar?
meh2frdf··on Copyright is not a divine right: India Delhi High Court
Why not? How long should it last?
meh2frdf··on Ask HN: In what areas are NoSQL Databases beneficial over Relational Databases?
I heard that the are better for the environment and smell nicer too.
meh2frdf··on Decentralized platform for photo sales and photo sharing, built on Ethereum
Well I suspect the design is not actually decentralised.
