megnaro··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
A separate LA Times article explained that the humidity is due to lingering effects of a recent hurricane/tropical storm.

"Forecasters attributed the punishing humidity to the remnants of Tropical Storm Iselle moving over the state, as well as unusually warm ocean temperatures due to a combination of a months-long marine heat wave, a powerful El Niño and climate change.

"Dew points in the Los Angeles Basin have been “really high,” hovering around 70 degrees in many places, with a few coastal areas like Redondo Beach and Torrance reaching a dew point of 73 to 75 on Friday, said Ryan Kittell, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. The metric measures the moisture content in the air."

megnaro··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2026)
Hi, are the roles listed for Seattle/Remote open only to residents of Seattle? Asking because my application was bounced with this message: "Your application shows you are based in an area that we are not currently hiring for this role, therefore we are unable to proceed." Not upset, just interested what the parameters were, or if for any reason this was unintended.
megnaro··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2026)
You'll find that in the job post.

megnaro··on 1989 California Medfly Attack
When I was a little kid in Long Beach I remember some days we couldn't use the drinking fountains at school and stuff like that because they (city? state?) had sprayed for medflies that day. I have no details, it's just a childhood memory.

I had no reason to access that memory except that it's here on HN. As a kid I had no idea there was anything more to it, but thanks to this post, now I do. Neat.

The author of this post is Adam Lichtl, probably the most intelligent person I've ever gotten to speak to in real life. He's really neat.
megnaro··on Ask HN: Physicists of HN, what are you working on these days?
I bought Modern Classical Physics last summer as a birthday gift to myself and I am also slowly going through it.
