megaremote··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
The same way airlines oversell seats, they don't expect everyone to turn up. But for these claims, they expect the majority not to.
megaremote··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again
And they only just stopped supporting 2009 imacs.
megaremote··on Show HN: TLDR This – Auto summarize any article or webpage in a click
Some info about it would be great? Do you use an AI model? Do you do semantic analysis? Is it open source?

I tried it on a wikipedia article and it didn't work too well.

megaremote··on Apple Hires Key Chip Designer From ARM as Own Efforts Ramp Up
> No one has even try to give any convincing argument for ARM on Mac. And yet everyone seems to believe it as Fact.

Yes, everyone believes it is coming, just like they believed the iPhone was coming, the iPad was coming, the Apple watch was coming.

megaremote··on China’s Biggest Startups Ditch Oracle and IBM for Home-Made Tech
Startups were using Oracle and IBM? Seems an odd choice.
megaremote··on A plan to phase out fossil fuel production in the US
Imagine the wonderful world we could be living in if someone had banned personal cars? Instead of roads everywhere we would have parks on instead, places for kids and adults to exist. Instead of urban sprawl we could have had walk able and cyclable cities, with a lot less pollution. Instead of 40,000 dead every year in the US we could have them living. Instead of 100,000s seriously injured, we could close down hospitals. Etc...
megaremote··on A plan to phase out fossil fuel production in the US
So everything would go up, but then people would have more money. Or are you suggesting that the extra money gets burnt in a furnace?

Have the carbon tax go to the people. Easy solution. Prices go up, people get more money.

megaremote··on Give Firefox a chance
I use all 3, but prefer firefox for most of what I do.
megaremote··on The Rise and Fall of Visual Basic
You couldn't compile it into an app. So you had to distribute the source code. This meant it was a dead-end for anything serious.
megaremote··on I’m not really a good web developer, I'm just good at Googling things
> But I've never met a single person who has ever directly read it.

I love how this is a unit of measure now. "I have never met anyone with an iphone, so...".

megaremote··on Bill Gates on making “one of the greatest mistakes of all time”
> However, both I and everyone I know that has ever used a Windows phone (there were several of us at work) absolutely loved the platform when compared to Android and iPhone.

Rubbish. Their CE phones were awful, and lots of people hated Micrsofts Windows phones and their laggy tiles.

megaremote··on Bill Gates on making “one of the greatest mistakes of all time”
Microsoft owned the smartphone market with CE, once palm went under. But they let it languish. You can see this happening today with Google's decisions to pull out of tablets, and close a number of products.
megaremote··on India has the highest data usage per smartphone
> Jio had a lot of money to use to grab the customers by offering free deals

How do you make money offering free deals?

megaremote··on London bans cars for a day in the fight against air pollution
And I bet they still drove. Big SUVs if they are like most families.
megaremote··on Slack Is Going Public at a $16B Valuation
Oh, yes. 100%. I can't imagine how we would work in the last two major companies I worked at without it. Everyone is on slack, great place to ask simple questions, create a channel to discuss an issue, add images and video, and provide feedback when you are ready.
megaremote··on The birth and death of a bike company: What happened to SpeedX
> I've lived in several cities in europe and i'm not actually sure i've ever seen anybody using them.

Used them all the time in London and Paris, and visiting other cities. They were great. Loads of people used them in the cities I saw.

I think there are a sort of people who will only use cars for everything, and don't really notice anything not car related.

megaremote··on $1B for 20,000 Bay Area homes
> Buy a smaller cruise ships and rent a pier to dock it.

Oh yes, no one has thought of that before. It has even been implemented.

megaremote··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
> Millions of dollars of work to theoretically save the user on a $10 HDMI cable

Not sure what you are talking about. Smart TV do mean not having to have a separate device to do streaming such as Netflix.

megaremote··on Walmart Grocery is now offering a $98 per year ‘Delivery Unlimited’ subscription
These are not the only two options.
megaremote··on Richard Baldwin on the “inhumanely fast” next phase of globalization
> Any way you slice it, the quality of jobs today is tremendously higher than in the past, and people are not being paid less.

Really? What about 40 years ago? Jobs were a lot easier, and you could buy a house and raise a family on one income. Why do you ignore that period of time, when workers had it good?

megaremote··on U.S. Escalates Online Attacks on Russia’s Power Grid
> that the US reserves the right

From whom do they reserve that right?

megaremote··on The Man Behind “Fortnite”
Sure, this is true. If it is one person. These games are huge, with multiple teams. So this is clearly not true. No one person knows one part of the game.

You easily get the situation where creators know better than the makers.

megaremote··on How the pursuit of leisure drives internet use
> Regarding your actual point, I've had a 100GB limit for the past 5 years (since I got an iPhone 6), with a 4G connection.

Congratulations. Almost every other person does not.

megaremote··on Drones piloted by climate-change activists target Heathrow
> agree to impose heavy restrictions on vehicle emissions used to feed, transport, and employ the average citizens of their countries

Lets ignore all the other environmental costs of vehicles, roads, gas, refineries, deaths, gas stations, and the big one, city sprawl.

Cars are the single worst thing every created, and not just for the environment.

megaremote··on Game Builder: Create 3D games with friends, no experience required
Why do I need steam for this? Seems very odd.
megaremote··on When Employees Use Software That IT Hasn’t Approved
I have a VM on my mac to go on the work network, using ethernet, while I do everything over wifi.
megaremote··on Mary Meeker’s 2019 internet trends report [pdf]
I had a car, it got stolen, so cars are crap for commuting.

Get a cheap bike that is nice to ride, 2 locks, and learn how to lock it up properly.

megaremote··on Desktop Neo – rethinking the desktop interface for productivity
> Overlapping windows doesn't provide any benefit. Making everything either full-screen or splitting the screen is so much better.

I disagree 100% and I hate people like you. Please, do not force this on users. I have about 10 programs running at once, all accessible because of the way they are partially stacked over each other.

megaremote··on US Customs Database Of Traveler Photos Was Hacked And Stolen
Ha. In the private sector, we discovered a vendor was using an actually health database with real users in it for testing their app. It was all covered up, with no monitoring, because we recently bought that vendor.
megaremote··on Barnes & Noble Set To Be Sold To Elliott Management For About $683M
