I recall as a tourist visiting some 25 yrs ago and was shocked by how much a breakfast was at IHOP this was in the Golden Park area and than was more shocked when down the street at a realtors office with the for sale listings on the window and there was a listing for a 'unit' for 350,000 and reading further it was a garage made into some sort of condo Has SF always been wacky overpriced?

megamike··on Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us
Middle class culture, any culture, can only stand if it is rewarded. In prior times middle class culture was fundamentally supported by the upper classes, who invested in America, creating vast wealth. They modeled sobriety, hard-work, risk and reward. The working classes modeled the behavior through church and labor guilds, standing together for each other and the nation. The wealthy have abandoned America, and the working classes have abandoned religion, guilds, and each other. Into that void steps cultural anarchy. Society requires hard-work, and discipline. It requires accountability, primarily of the wealthy. I tire of prose that lament the loss of culture without holding those accountable who have abandoned their responsibilities

megamike··on Amazon denies tariff pricing plan after White House calls it "hostile/political"
The media, from the WSJ to the NY Times, across the political spectrum, the blogosphere, the social media, ALL of them have been LYING to Americans about the tariffs from day one, bombarding them with bullshit and lies and braindead idiocies, ceaselessly fearmongering, every day all day long, in their efforts to sacrifice everything, including the entire US economy, at the altar of high stock prices, fat corporate profit margins, and one-sided globalization. I have never seen anything like that. No wonder everyone is in a sour mood and all the soft data is shitty. But there is an economic reality out there: businesses trying to make their businesses work, and consumers making records amounts of money and spending it, and having fun.https://wolfstreet.com/2025/04/29/despite-all-moaning-and-gr...

megamike··on White House says 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico remain in effect
Asked about the prospect of raising tariffs on Chinese goods even further to pressure Beijing into negotiations, President Trump said the current 125% levy is already a “significant number,” and he can’t imagine increasing it any more.

“I can’t imagine it. I don’t think I’ll have to do it,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Office. “I don’t think we’ll have to go higher – you know, we calculated it very carefully.”

Asked whether certain American importers could be granted exemptions during the 90-day period, Trump said the administration would evaluate requests on a case-by-case basis. “Some [companies] get hit a little bit harder, and we’ll take a look at that – just instinctively, more than anything else,” he said. “You almost can’t take a pencil to paper. It’s really more of an instinct.”
