meesterdude··on What Will Happen in the 2020s
> YouTube is basically what "SecondLife" was supposed to be. People are exchanging all kinds of valuable information and entertainment on YouTube.

A keen observation!

meesterdude··on Ask HN: What did you build in 2019?
you can build a predictive model with 97% accuracy, but you can't figure out how to comment on posts on HN?
meesterdude··on What Are the React Team Principles?
I prefer the rails doctrine https://rubyonrails.org/doctrine/ for both the original perspectives it holds, and because they are deeply ingrained in the framework - not just platitudes.
meesterdude··on Ask HN: Haven't worked for a while, best guide/advice to start a hobby project?
Obviously, the paralysis and anxiety is something to look at.

Also: I wouldn't so recommend Vue. Focus on rendering boring, server-rendered HTML first. Add vue later.

I'm a big fan of rails for the unique focus on developer happiness and velocity it places on the stack. There are similar stacks "technically" but it's the difference between a modern OS and windows 3.1. To which I say, the stack DOES matter; they are not interchangeable because they each have different philosophies and priorities. If rails wasn't free I'd paid for it.

But it depends on your priorities and what you're trying to do. I want to be effective at, and enjoy building, web applications. But if you're trying to just learn X technology or language vs building an MVP, those priorities can shape what you work with.

My best advice is aim to succeed even if you fail. Do things the RIGHT way, use the tools / technologies you've always wanted to. Even if the project goes nowhere, at least you got to play with something, and be professional about doing it.

Lastly, think of small problems you COULD solve, or explore. then build off those.

meesterdude··on Being Average in the Age of Alpha
Perhaps stepping out of the "alpha" concept, and redefining what it means to be a man, is worth considering. Humans are not boolean, nor do they exist as a point along a singular axis.

To me, a "man" is someone who listens, who elevates others, who fights for others, and is relentless in doing so. We need less "alpha" in this world, and more "fierce gentleman". We need not warriors, but collaborators.

meesterdude··on The Body Keeps the Score: Book Summary
Great book, by the father (to most at least) of PTSD and CPTSD. Has revealed for me the role of trauma in my life, and those of basically everyone around me.

But after reading it, i felt a little... lost. I knew a lot about the problem space, and some solutions outlined, but it wasn't integrated within me, and all i had was a few therapies I could try out and hope the best for.

Luckily, the next book I picked up was Mindsight by Dr. Daniel Siegel, and that has helped immensely in applying the knowledge of The Body Keeps Score, to bring about a shift in focus and presence in our bodies.

One thing he talked about that i found of interest is a column of neurons, only 6 deep, that make up our perceptions of reality. the top 3, take on a top down approach from the cortex downwards; while the bottom 3 come up from the limbic area of our sensory inputs - and it is in the middle of space of the column that reality appears - a mix of our past perceptions and preferences, with what we are observing in the here and now.

So, What happens with PTSD? There is a shift towards the top-down thinking, and a muting (or overriding) of limbic signals. In the tug of war of 6 neurons, the top down wins out over our perceptions - allowing people to experience and truly relive flashbacks of traumas like war in their bedroom - they are detached from their limbic signaling.

Which is why - mindfulness, meditation, and being more present in your body matter so much. What you pay attention to matters - and allows us to hone/reshape firing patterns.

meesterdude··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
The startup I worked for laid off 30% of their workforce, and I was among those cut. That was 3 years ago. 113 job interviews later, and i'm only just getting things back together with freelance work.
meesterdude··on What to Do When You Get Sherlocked by Apple
There are web apps for every example you listed, so I don;t understand what point you're trying to make.
meesterdude··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
current rails dev here, i've found ripping out the custom SQL and replacing it with ORM equivalents offers the best performance and readability short of custom Postgres functions. The state of ORM in rails of 2014 vs 2019 is a big leap.
meesterdude··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
> I do know one thing: I won’t fall into the “ORMs make it easy” trap. They are an acceptable way to represent a data definition, but a poor way to write queries and a bad way to store object state. If you’re using an RDBMS, bite the bullet and learn SQL.

I don't think i'm alone in saying I'd rather hire a developer who is native with an ORM and can dive into SQL when things get thorny, than hire one who's going to fight me on the very merits of an ORM at all.

I mean, hey. To each his own. But lets be clear: this is ridiculous, and if you think it's a position you want to take up, make sure you can get hired holding onto it.

meesterdude··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company (2018)
was honestly expecting a stack along the line of yours - the one in the article is actually fairly complex and not-boring.
meesterdude··on Show HN: Enter your URL and view CVEs affecting your stack over last 6 months
i don't need to provide my (potentially vulnerable) production URL to whoever-you-might-be in order to identify the last 6 months of vulnerabilities - I can just google for that.

Submitting your site to this is just asking for trouble.

meesterdude··on India Loses Contact with Probe Just as It Prepares to Land on Moon
This is a great thing for the people of India - I mean, hopefully.

The science we expel is a reflection of the cultures that created it. In space, everyone has had failures. And I hope this failure offers reflection and improvement and that they can grow from it.

But even still, this is otherwise part of a narrative change for the people of india, and something "so simple" can have a huge impact on future generations and what people tell themselves on an individual level.

meesterdude··on Microsoft Screws Azure Customers and Its Own Advocates Alike
I know a few .NET stacks being served up on linux servers (no MS DB, obviously)
meesterdude··on MoviePass reportedly changed passwords to prevent users from seeing films
I've also had inexplicable password issues with ebay like you mention above - paypal not that I can recall.
meesterdude··on The Deadly Boredom of ‘A Meaningless Life’
Fwiw, I also had something of a "why" moment in my life - and after a lot of soul-searching, it was establishing a map (flowchart) of values that helped me feel oriented. It guides my "why" for a lot of things, including why I choose to still be a live.

If you're life has become meaningless, perhaps the solution is to give it your own meaning.

meesterdude··on Why Aren’t We Talking About LinkedIn?
This is an ad for linkedin and thus a marketing effort on behalf of microsoft. It's not meant to be a serious platform for people to use - it's meant to be a product. I've been on linkedin for a few years and it's only been a waste of time despite plenty of interactions.
meesterdude··on Why is modern web development so complicated?
us backend guys come from a time when buttons worked when you clicked on them. It's a concept we are adamant to share with you new front-end folks :)
meesterdude··on Owning nothing is now a luxury, thanks to a number of subscription startups
Conversely, all of craigslist I bought a leather recliner couch for $50, a 40 inch TV for $250, and a dining table for $125. That's $425/yr vs $1440/yr, and I bought those 3 years ago - which would be $4320 @ $120 * 36 months.

It's a good option for certain lifestyles, but can equally become surprisingly expensive if not manged.

meesterdude··on Random Forest vs. Neural Network
Been using the annoy library lately (https://github.com/spotify/annoy) after becoming frustrated with TF not behaving as I'd expect. There's another lib in python, nmslib, but I can't get seem to get it to work right - and the docs are crap.

Anyway, would love to pick someone's brain about this stuff to help fill in my gaps.

meesterdude··on Square Inc. Co-Founder Tristan O’Tierney Dies at 35
fwiw I'm literally asking for a friend. that's why it matters.
meesterdude··on Square Inc. Co-Founder Tristan O’Tierney Dies at 35
thanks for the downvotes to a serious question. real great community here.
meesterdude··on Square Inc. Co-Founder Tristan O’Tierney Dies at 35
Anyone know what the addiction was? given kidney involvement i'm leaning towards alcohol, but don't want to assume. I know it's cliche to say, but asking for a friend.

A loss for a lot of people, especially his young family.

meesterdude··on Open Letter from New York State Budget Director Robert Mujica Regarding Amazon
> Once they won, they didn't really know what to do. Now everyone realizes that New York is worse off.

Not sure how you've reached this conclusion. "Worse off" is subjective.

meesterdude··on New ‘past’ link on HN front page

meesterdude··on Teaching People to Trade Stocks Is Like Starting Them on Heroin – Munger
