meesterdude··on Ask HN: What do you think about the no-code movement?
> No matter what "no-code" tool is invented, the world keeps inventing new tasks for human programmers to do that today's no-code tool can't do. There's always a delta in capabilities.

And by that logic always an opportunity to make something that was once hard to do, easy.

meesterdude··on Mac SE/30 Odyssey
the SE/30 was my first mac, way back when i was a 7 year old. Crazy to think i've been a mac user for almost 30 years.
meesterdude··on Give to Thunderbird
understandable shifting sands; but that's NO excuse for the sort of shoddy work they've done to address it. At best interpretation, there was not enough rudimentary QA done, because some of their changes (at least, in previous releases i worked with) outright broke the ability to compose messages. This was the result of finally hitting the "upgrade" button: black text on a black background. So I rolled back.

This, in addition to some of their other UX changes (like moving to SVG icons) - just makes it feel like after 10 years I am no longer their user base, and from what I've read the team is unwilling to be flexible with these changes. Thanks for the middle finger. They're breaking things and I'm supposed to just be happy about it.

Regretfully I've fallen out of love with thunderbird, and i am exploring other clients. My needs are not complex, outside of perhaps the google auth song & dance.

I want thunderbird to be the FF of email clients.... I guess in a way they are. Open source disappointment that pushes people to non-open solutions.

meesterdude··on Give to Thunderbird
Use thunderbird everyday on both my machines - but they've been changing things for no good reason and breaking the UI/UX because of it. thanks but no thanks.
meesterdude··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)
wrapbook.com | Senior Engineer (Rails) | US & Canada Remote

meesterdude··on Strikes: Next-gen trading app with intuitive tools and no hidden fees
you used the word "investments" again, so I don't think you understood my comment. In the context of your comment, saying "preserve their capital" would be a clearer phrasing. They're trading, not investing - you already call it a trading app, so just keep it consistent.

Also, to be clear: options are still high risk, you can't predict the future. Robinhood options leaves much to be desired, and I think an app focused on options will go a long way for traders because they don't have enough information.

I will also highlight that a lot of people have been burned by not being able to act on their positions via robinhood due to the platform falling over from demand. This is the chief reason I won't do options trading. Would love to see assurances that when I need to exit a position i'll actually be able to, such as having an SLA.

meesterdude··on Strikes: Next-gen trading app with intuitive tools and no hidden fees
They call it "investing" on the site but options trading is the biggest gamble there is. Not saying an options-specific app isn't needed, but misleading communication around risks.
meesterdude··on Ask HN: Jobs in Software/Technology Activism?
Sure!

The entertainment industry is timecard based - and many of the workers are unionized. This means things like, if they don't get time to take a lunch but work over 6 hours, they're due a certain penalty from the production company for the meal they never had; or if they only got 4 hours of sleep last night before being called back to set - they're owed another penalty to compensate them based on a formula of invaded hours. This in addition to things like retirement benefits that need to be calculated, tracked, and paid into.

Each union, and different roles within unions, and even different cities and states (california especially), have different terms and rates and formulas defined; but currently actually meeting those requires a team of specialists to "breakdown" the time for the given workers union/state/agreement. It's hard, and without that team many production companies just wing it - and some have been making incorrect/noincompliant payments to their workers for years.

At wrapbook, we're automating all of those agreements. There is no guesswork when you submit a timecard - which is great for workers, because they know they'll get paid what they are owed; and good for (most) production companies because they WANT to be compliant, but it's hard to do with all of the requirements involved, and good for unions because they know we are ensuring every T is crossed and I is dotted in compliance with the agreements they defined and everyone involved agreed to.

We do other things as well to make sure payments get paid and that they go where they're supposed to go, another area where there has been problems for workers.

I hope that adds some clarity.

meesterdude··on Ask HN: Jobs in Software/Technology Activism?
What do you think about strengthening labor unions & reducing wage theft of gig workers? Those are some of the results of the work we do at wrapbook, and something that I take pride in. But it's not maybe as "focused" as what you're after, as internally we're very warm and laid back.

But if it sounds interesting, we're hiring for Engineering(Rails) & Data; Email me at russell@wrapbook.com if you want to chat more.

Regardless, there are a plethora of nonprofits (FSF, EFF, AP, etc..) that need expertise, so you could try targeting orgs that do work you favor specifically.

meesterdude··on Even 'Free' Chia Farming Wouldn't Be Profitable at Scale
SSDs (or NVME) are used for plotting generation - but serving them can be done with big, dumb, slow spining drives.
meesterdude··on Underground fiber optics spy on humans moving above
True, and with even more sufficient data, such as context and other acoustic profiling like those from the tires and one very well might be able to detect a specific Sentra.
meesterdude··on Folk wisdom on visual programming
Neat! Seems like what's old is new again. I'm up to the same shenanigans (sans java, TCL and a graph database). spreadsheets are a great medium to provide non-technical people access to adjusting production with nuanced precision.
meesterdude··on The most precious resource is agency
> It seems like it's saying something, but, really, it's not

This was the same takeaway I had of your comment. It reads like glenn beck.

Purpose & meaning are strong motivators and I agree with the author that there is not enough focus on that to help promote agency in individuals. There are societal failure(s) to be highlighted here, despite your unwillingness to see them.

meesterdude··on The Method of Loci: Build Your Memory Palace
This is great stuff - I'm impressed with how far you were able to take things in the browser. I also toyed with a tower concept - one of the things I settled on was what matters is data leading to data; to get to Y, i have to go through X first. So towers are a natural way to do that. I also think you have remained focused on staying true to the method of loci approach, which is admirable.

Additionally, I think having this sharable and on the web opens a lot of possibilities. I hope you keep working on it.

But man, that color change on your blog really messed with me. I have F.lux installed which adds warmth to whites to help with getting to sleep at night or as daylight changes and your site is like a rapid version of that. I'd prefer either not that at all, or at least scroll position based.

meesterdude··on Google sunsets the APK format for new Android apps
when i saw the headline, I knew google would use it as a pretext to do something disgusting. Everything they do has some dark pattern to it somewhere. AMP is a great example.

You should never, ever give your signing key to anyone. Especially not google. you might think of google "they wouldn't" but in fact they can, they have, and they will again.

meesterdude··on The Method of Loci: Build Your Memory Palace
We are all of us :)

That's awesome! VR has lots of potential but i'm not (and it's not) there yet. Your project sounds really novel. I've equated mine to a 3D database because you can do inner/outer joins, search, filter, and materialize "views" in 3D space.

I'm nearing a demo stage, been at this for a few years - but wow will i need to revisit my code before I expand on future development - it's a lot of code to sling and compared to my day job doing web dev in MVC, leaves a lot to be desired architecturally.

Great job on blogging about your project - i need to get better about that.

meesterdude··on The Method of Loci: Build Your Memory Palace
Neat! this is basically the app I'm building. A 3D world where you can place files and web browsers on structures you construct. Although it's less about memorization and more for organization ("I put that on the wall past the pink elephant"). And because I'm a nerd, everything gets saved as JSON so it's easy to hack around.

spatial memory is an underappreciated mechanism of our brains, and was one of the founding concepts of MacOS (that you could spatially remember where files are)

meesterdude··on A foreign seller has hijacked my Amazon Klein bottle listing
Hold lots of respect for you and regret that this has happened to you, but thanks for bringing these specifics to light. Amazon needs to fix this - or regulators need to force them to.
meesterdude··on I still use plain text for everything. (2016)
There's more to plaintext than .txt files.

I'm building an app (3D memory palace) and the save file format is JSON. It's not plaintext, but it is text, and structured in such a way that you could rebuild the app yourself if you wanted to - or still have access to your data should the app stop working one day. It also means it's trivial to edit the JSON if you want to add or remove something, or make mass-changes that would be impractical to do within the app itself.

At work as a web developer, I'll often facilitate CSV import & Export for Product to work with the app. This lets them use Excel, which they're already comfortable with, and removes me from the development cycle because now changes are just a file upload that they can do themselves.

Both JSON and CSV are great plaintext ways to represent structured data. Personally, I wish there was a markdown for excel, or some way of representing the entire capabilities (such as formulas) in plaintext instead of in a proprietary XLS. Hopefully someone has something in the works around that.

Proprietary is easy - just do whatever you want. But doing things in a way that lets users & other developers "yes and" your work is an under appreciated value add.

meesterdude··on The faster you unlearn OOP, the better for you and your software
OOP doesn't work for the author, while I wouldn't be a developer without OOP. Does not make them wrong, or me right. Where the author fails is in recognizing these different approaches can coexist in the field of software engineering; there is no ONE way to build software, and no way is without it's tradeoffs.

OOP is how I think. There is no reasoned argument one could make to undo that. No amount of rightness will change my nature, which leaves this as a boastful display of ones ego and not any meaningful movement in computer science or engineering.

Instead: I would love for the author, if they truly know better, to take those specific situations they highlighted and detail ways those could be improved or done differently. Because they are hard problems, and it would be meaningful & educational to explore refactors to improve.

meesterdude··on Rejection Sensitivity
> I'm not sure writing a blog post or tweet is displaying the necessary levels of sensitivity (at least on an interpersonal level) to meet this criteria.

This is an unnecessary dig on the author, and is just a bit pompous. I would counter: writing a blog post on the loss of a close friend and exploring how and why for them and in society at large; displays a high level of introspection, self awareness, and a mature relationship with their emotions. When anger and blame are the typical reactions for such an outcome, it was a mature and reasoned exploration.

meesterdude··on Bitcoin rival Chia 'destroyed' hard disc supply chains, says its boss
it depends on the drives. CAN you destroy drives by plotting? yes. But other drives can take quite a beating - and generate 40K plots worth of data before reaching failure point.

additionally, farming (serving plots) is done with regular drives, and those are very lightly read from and used once the plots are loaded.

meesterdude··on Bitcoin rival Chia 'destroyed' hard disc supply chains, says its boss
The thing with hard drives: if chia bombs, you can still turn around and sell them on Ebay. And when they're 14tb+ drives, they'll retain their value for a decent time.

you can't do that with miners, and GPU's are still fairly specific components. But plenty of companies and people have all sorts of needs for extra space.

I mean - if we're going to be scaling anything... hard drives are the thing. And if there are any storage optimizations people come up with, those will only benefit the storage industry overall; unlike ASIC miners, for example.

meesterdude··on An early look at Postgres 14: Performance and monitoring Improvements
I mean... the WORST? For me Mongo takes the cake, but oracle is up there too.
meesterdude··on Azar, a Korean Chatroulette-style dating app quietly taking over the world
Match is a plague and needs to be stopped. They homogenize all their assets and thus break dating in the same poorly thought out, woke signaling, profit driven kind of way. All dating apps are broken in the same ways because Match has broken them. It was not always this way.
meesterdude··on Do games like Factorio or Eve Online sap the intellectual potential of humanity?
i would say of course they can and in many cases do - same for TV shows or drinking with friends or exercising. Everything can be taken to an unhealthy extreme.

What about: Do video games like those impact the potential intelligence of a person? the shopify CEO is famous for saying Factorio counts as a business expense.

meesterdude··on Exploring Databases Visually
For what i'm after, 3D is the only way to go. I'm building it in unity so you can store markdown, webpages, video and images within 3D space and relate them to each other. (so not really a tool for visualizing a production DB or anything)
meesterdude··on Exploring Databases Visually
I'm building a 3D database that lets you explore graph and relational data that you've created. For research or creating your own mind palaces - you can freely join & filter collections of information. But it's more like a 3D excel of sorts.
meesterdude··on Spreadsheet is a software development paradigm
spreadsheets are the bees knees. I'm building a video game inspired by excel - a bit of a different take on the concept of a "3d spreadsheet"
meesterdude··on Ask HN: What (side-)project are you working on?
A casual "game" that lets you organize information (text, pictures, video, webpages) within a 3D building, allowing you to browse and jump in/out of different contexts easily.
