meelford··on Show HN: Thoreau BASIC – What if BASIC hadn't gone out of fashion?
this would be ideal for the latest version of the modern ZX Speccys, especially given the growing interest from hardware enthusiasts
meelford··on Molly guard in reverse
I personally know a guy who shut down an oil factory by pressing the molly guard button, just because the button looked interesting.
meelford··on People instantly decide whether to trust a product based on design
It’s the same with articles: I tend to prefer those from scientific magazines, where decoration is minimal and the authors focus on conveying meaning, rather than those that are perfectly designed on Medium or LinkedIn but, in reality, are very shallow and often outdated. Most deliberately decorated products also look over-processed.
meelford··on Figma AI
Despite the ethical concerns, it would be very useful if Figma offered an option for large organisations to train an organisation-level model that does not share data with the rest of the world. I believe the opt-in rate would be much higher.
meelford··on NPS doesn’t say anything particularly useful
Background: I have designed and implemented NPS feedback systems in several companies.

I noticed that people are concerned about this when it was not implemented correctly, i.e. as a complimentary question in the long questionnaire or as a follow-up question at the end of the journey.

The NPS collection mechanic has many advantages:

1. The mental entry point for the user is very low - just 1 question.

2. It is very useful to track user feedback over their lifetime (ask every 6 months) and actively resolve issues if NPS shows it.

3. Another great thing is not a numerical feedback, but a written answer that gives a lot of really useful ideas for improvement.

4. And finally, you don't need any specific context to show the question, so it can be embedded in almost any stage of the user experience.

meelford··on How to cook a medieval feast: recipes from the Middle Ages
Enjoyed reading the Medieval English. It was so concise & ideal for documentation:

“Tak cheryes & do out the stones & grynde hem wel & draw hem thorw a streynour & do it in a pot.”

meelford··on Ask HN: What nootropics do you take?

meelford··on The BeOS file system, an OS geek retrospective (2018)
