mediocrejoker··on Nextspace – NeXTSTEP-like desktop environment for Linux
As someone who is not familiar with OpenSTEP, what are the implications of a desktop built with it?

There are many small things that I like about OS X that never seem to make it into the graphical re-skins. Things like coherence of applications "feel", as well as more tangible features such as consistent and global keyboard shortcuts in every app (ie. Cmd + , for preferences). The visual polish of OS X is the least important thing that makes it usable.

Do you think a project like Nextspace could be the foundation for a Linux desktop experience more on par with the consistency of OS X?

mediocrejoker··on Email security on Democratic campaigns is as bad as 2016
Interesting comparing this with the Risky Business interview with Bob Lord (the incoming CSO for the DNC) a few weeks back. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between the security posture of the DNC and the individual campaigns discussed in this story.

mediocrejoker··on Google is irresponsible, claims Fortnite's chief in bug row
It's not too surprising that Google's definition of "patched" is "rolled out to a small percentage of users" since that's essentially how it's worked on Android for years.

IANAL but this is an interesting legal precedent if true. Since this was an out of court settlement I assume there are no public records of the decision?
mediocrejoker··on Home Assistant: Open-source home automation platform running on Python 3
Thanks, I hadn't heard of AppDaemon. It looks a lot like what I found lacking the last time I tried to set up Home Assistant.
mediocrejoker··on Home Assistant: Open-source home automation platform running on Python 3
I've struggled with this as well. I actually find the YAML harder to write than a full programming language would be. For example, conditional logic such as "Turn on this light when the sun goes down only if this person is home" get complicated quickly. The breadth of options and plugins available is impressive but the documentation presents a lot of small snippets and not many explanations of how to design a coherent system.

I have a feeling that my next step will be reading the source code to get a better sense of how the YAML is translated into the internal state machine, but an official "beginners guide" would go a long way to making this not necessary.

Is this the kind of thing that requires a professional installation? Any sort of guides or kits available?
mediocrejoker··on UBC researchers may have found a way to make donated blood universal
Headline of article is much less certain:

Researchers at the University of B.C. think they may have found a way to transform a very common type of human blood — type-A — in the universally usable type-O negative.

mediocrejoker··on Flatpak 1.0 Released, Ready for Prime Time
Sure. I'm at work now but I'll try to get to it this evening.
mediocrejoker··on The new MacBook Pros with T2 chips do indeed kernel panic randomly
I had a very poor experience with a Lenovo-authorized repair shop in Victoria, Canada who replaced the display on my then-brand new T420 when it failed but somehow managed to force the bottom case back together in a way that left 2-3 mm gaps at various spots and cracked the plastic in a few places.

Lenovo refused to replace it.

mediocrejoker··on Flatpak 1.0 Released, Ready for Prime Time
I installed Ubuntu 18.04 the other day and was prompted to install some common software such as Slack, Discord and Spotify . I installed all of them, and it mostly worked (navigating to another page in the software centre cancels an ongoing install with no warning).

When I ran mount, I noticed that every package I'd installed had it's own entry in the mount list. After I rebooted the machine, these mounts were no longer listed and the software I'd "installed" was no longer available through the gnome menu.

I'm not against finding new and better ways to package software but this experience left me with the expression that the technology is not quite ready to be rolled out and adopted en masse.

mediocrejoker··on The new MacBook Pros with T2 chips do indeed kernel panic randomly
I think you either missed or ignored the point the parent comment made regarding their reasons for avoiding Lenovo as a company, rather than strictly wishing to avoid spyware in one's own laptop.

mediocrejoker··on Reading the NSA’s codebase: LemonGraph review
The way I read it, the author is surprised that struct node_t is typedef'd to node_t* and not simply node_t

I am not used to that style so it seems odd to me, but I suppose if it was common in a codebase one would get used to it.

mediocrejoker··on Snapchat Source Code GitHub Leak Caused by Bad iOS Update
No explanation on _how_ a bad iOS update leaked source code? Can't imagine Apple is too happy to be blamed for this with no details.
mediocrejoker··on ThinkPad X220 MacOS High Sierra Installation
I switched from Linux to Mac about a year ago and something that is underrated in MacOS is the _consistency_ of the UI.

Not just the visual appearance, but for example keyboard shortcuts are relatively universal; Cmd + , is the shortcut for Preferences/Settings in Safari, Chrome, iTerm, Slack, NewsReader etc. I don't know if that would even be possible on the leading Linux DEs.

I love the customizability of linux, but I've decided that a good user experience goes beyond the appearance, and what's required is putting serious thought into user workflows. Those sorts of usability studies don't seem to be a priority for most FOSS projects.

There are things about Linux that I miss on Mac, but overall I prefer a system that's consistent to one that ticks every single box.

mediocrejoker··on Macbook eGPU Redux: Sticking a GTX 1080 in an AKiTiO Thunder2
Is this on High Sierra? I have the same machine and had read that TB2 was not going to be supported/deliberately disabled so I sort of gave up hope of getting eGPU working.

mediocrejoker··on Marijuana addiction is real, and rising
In that entire article, the only definition of 'marijuana addiction' is a single sentence, and one that requires further clarification:

> But in the public health and medical communities, it is a well-defined disorder that includes physical withdrawal symptoms, cravings and psychological dependence.

Does anyone know what the specific criteria are for diagnosis? The rest of the article seems to be quotes from various people stating without evidence "Yes, marijuana addiction is real"

I'm not saying it's not real, but nothing in this article provides any evidence that it is.

mediocrejoker··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
I've been using safari for a few months as my main browser and while it does feel quick, I can't say I've noticed a huge difference in battery life compared to chrome or firefox.

Are there any (recent) tests you know of that compare battery life between safari and the other major browsers?

mediocrejoker··on Macintosh Startup Sound History [video]
I am recent convert to Apple and before I abandoned windows for Linux sometime around Vista, I would always disable every desktop sound as you do.

That being said, I have to say that the sound my apple laptop makes when it boots (which doesn't happen often; there is no wake-from-sleep sound) is oddly comforting.

I am actually disappointed it is being removed.

mediocrejoker··on Thousands of AI researchers are boycotting the new Nature journal
I think a lot non-academics (myself included) tend to hear the phrase "peer reviewed" and conflate it (rightly or wrongly) with "these results are replicable and therefore correct."

I don't know what the long term solution is but I have a feeling it won't involve companies that charge a lot of money for a service (publishing) that has been effectively free since the Internet has existed.
