mediaserf··on Ask HN: Why is there so little info on the web about IBM mainframe programming?
Have you seen https://www.ibmmainframer.com/?

I would also dig through Project Guttenburg https://www.gutenberg.org/ for IBM Mainframe Programming books if you're interested in the history.

mediaserf··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
Here is a great break-down of how linux swap actually works: https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10678
mediaserf··on Formula 1 2020: The secret aerodynamicist – are capes the key?
It's the toe - the primary "advantage" is that they can warm up the tires on formation / restarts without having to scrub back and forth. That scrubbing motion wears especially hard on the rear tires.
mediaserf··on Brave launches 1.0
Why does the BAT mining extension continue to run even if I opt-out of the rewards system?
mediaserf··on Ask HN: Would you pay for beautifully designed Linux software?
Right, that's what struck me about this question too. It is not about "beautiful design" when it comes to linux software, it is about being functional and that includes being on top of all of the fragmentation when it comes to linux desktops, window managers, distributions, and libraries.

It is hard to justify paying for something when you have to spend an appreciable amount of time getting it to work in your set up. Working well out of the box and consistently with updates is the first step.

mediaserf··on What has to happen with Unix virtual memory when you have no swap space
Here is a really good article breaking down what happens in linux with regard to swap, albeit a bit dated (2011) https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10678
mediaserf··on Moving the Linux desktop to another reality
Plasma (KDE) still has wobbly windows. Settings -> Desktop Behavior -> Desktop Effects
mediaserf··on My Twitch Live Coding Setup
I often verbalize through problems (talk to myself) - so this may actually be a good excuse for that.
mediaserf··on Software Piracy Birthed an Underground Art Scene (2018) [video]
Only a few Atari 8-bit people in the audience, but one thing that wasn't covered in his overview was ATASCII art - sometimes made with a program called a "Breakin' Generator". There are some online demos here: http://www.breakintochat.com/collections/atascii/

mediaserf··on What are good linux laptops for 2018?
I have a P50 running Arch Linux. I upgraded from a W520 and thought the keyboard would be a problem, but the keyboard is actually nice once you get used to it. Everything else works except for the fingerprint sensor and there's a project for that (https://github.com/nmikhailov/Validity90)
mediaserf··on France seizes france.com from man who's had it since 1994
This is the interesting thing. If it had been france.us - would the policy be different? .com is a special case, as if a number existed outside of an allocated country code.
mediaserf··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
Does anyone know if it caches beyond the specified TTL like some services do? One of the things I love about Google's is that it honors TTL.
mediaserf··on AMP for email is a terrible idea
Yes! This "over-engineering" is happening all over Google products. Chrome is another example. It is not all bad, however, some Google Apps really needed attention, like the new Calendar is a step up (IMO).
mediaserf··on Google and Facebook are watching our every move online
I use an extension called Canvas Defender that does this. You can have it create a new "fingerprint" every so often. It also pops up an alert when a site requests a fingerprint. I believe Facebook uses the fingerprint as part of the browser profile to help combat fraudulent logins, as I get many more "new browser" emails from them with this extension than I did prior to installing it.
mediaserf··on Model F Keyboards project – Bringing back the buckling spring keyboard
These are the keyboards that I use. Love them!
mediaserf··on [dead]
You're right. I didn't throw a debugger at it. It seems to randomly ramp up CPU load and stay high until I kill the process.

Due to instability and memory/race condition issues with the new sykpe app, I've been using Pidgin and the skypeweb plugin: https://github.com/EionRobb/skype4pidgin/tree/master/skypewe...

This works well for me since most of my skype traffic is chats, but I have to load the new skype app for calls.

mediaserf··on Early Linux filesystem reliability
I still do: sync; sync; shutdown now -r

Before you think I'm too old-fashioned, it's at least the shutdown command and not "init 6"

mediaserf··on Sublime Text 3 Build 3132 released
"Linux: Added repositories for apt, yum and pacman" - Thanks for including Arch Linux (pacman).
mediaserf··on Human Resources Isn’t About Humans
No, you're absolutely right. HR's role is to protect the company, which can be aligned or at odds with an employee situation. In most cases it is about eliminating or minimizing the company's risk of legal action.

mediaserf··on Stop Using BCC
The article doesn't mention one good use of BCC - sending emails to groups to prevent reply-alls.
mediaserf··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
If you really can be remote, a smaller city can be nice. I live in Cleveland, right on the lake. It is a functional city and gives me a longer runway for my startup. As more of the workforce becomes truly remote, I believe we'll see a resurgence of small towns. Some smaller cities are putting fiber in already planning for urban refugees from larger cities.
mediaserf··on System76 Galago Pro [video]
The deal-breaker on the Dell Precision 5510 for me was the keyboard layout. I work on the command line and I need the pipe key on the right side of the keyboard and directly above the shift key. I have a new Thinkpad P50 and I am happy with that.
