medell··on Ireland’s Diarmuid Early wins world Microsoft Excel title
It used to be financial modeling but they realized they’d get more attention with the esports audience this way.

It’s gone quite far now - one of the many challenges was a mock terrain map where you’d calculate distances to hike while considering the weight of your pack. Even the way they walk through the tunnel is done for show.

medell··on Who still uses cash?
I just visited China and seeing it as 3rd lowest on the list makes sense. Everything is done by QR Code with AliPay or WeChat. Even the old man selling bamboo cane for less than a dollar takes it.

Some restaurants do not take cash, period - it adds a staff member. A few places like a massage parlour I even tried to offer cash instead, and they didn’t care which leads me to believe the fees are very low. Of course, it is China so there’s no privacy.

medell··on New Mac Mini with M4
This might actually push people to upgrade their hardware. And Apple retention rates are high. Apple will be fine.
medell··on Roku files patent to inject ads via HDMI
You left the last sentence out of the paragraph from their ad copy. It doesn’t make their practices OK, but it’s important for those who don’t click through:

> We should note, however, that this data becomes aggregated, removing personally identifiable information before it is received by advertisers.

medell··on Are compostable coffee cups any better for the environment?
This. Only 5% of post-consumer plastic waste in the US was recycled in 2021.
medell··on Ask HN: DarkSky Alternatives?
This is impressively very close! It uses Pirate Weather, a thread on accuracy from last week: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34198683
medell··on Apple Rankings
Most of the apples in grocery stores have been in storage for months since most are harvested in fall and have been sprayed with diphenylamine (DPA), an antioxidant that slows the development of black patches on the skin. DPA is banned in the EU because a byproduct of it when it breaks down, nitrosamine, is a carcinogen.

I love apples, but since finding this out, I try to avoid eating them out of season.

This article fails to mention DPA, but is interesting nonetheless! https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/11/26/668256349/th...

medell··on Apple Rankings
Agree, ambrosia is my #1. The fact that it is 55 and the mealier, less tart, less sweet Gala apples are 70 tells me we have very different tastes. It is closer to a Honeycrisp, which they have as 91 and I grab when Ambrosias are unavailable.
medell··on CatalanGate: Spyware operation against Catalans using Pegasus and Candiru
Check out The Silence of Others (2018) on Netflix, produced by Almodovar for more background on the Franco atrocities and how it still is echoing today.
medell··on Show HN: I built a zero-cost, ad-free alternative to LinkedIn
Black Mirror Nose Dive anyone? Nice concept but the "invest" idea introduces friction that could be too much to overcome. What about a PageRank system based on recommendation / testimonials and likes and connections?
medell··on Going Beyond the Board: A Whole New Trello Is Here
I wonder how long this been in the works, and is this playing catch-up to ClickUp and Notion? I find Trello's UX much more responsive and their apps much more functional. However limiting the new features (timeline view with swim lanes!) to the paid plan might stifle growth.
medell··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
It doesn't have to be one or the other. Wear it to protect yourself and others.
medell··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
This is a common and dangerous misconception. Wearing a seatbelt causes you to be a projectile that bounces around the car, into other people. YouTube "not wearing a seatbelt" and you'll never not wear one again when others are in the car.
medell··on I built a lay-down desk
Anyone interested in dynamic sitting or creating a workplace that encourages movement and strengthening that goes against this passive lay-down desk, check out Katy Bowman's work: https://www.nutritiousmovement.com/dynamic-at-home-work-and-...
medell··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
Exactly. This is where sketchnoting / graphic recording can be extremely beneficial. It's also fun and I'm far more likely to review handwritten notes that contain graphics organized in however manner I wish, versus a chunk of typed out near verbatim top to bottom text. As you progress in visual note taking you can develop a shorthand, a library of icons you repeatedly use and can sketch out quickly.
medell··on MasterClass is seizing its moment
What does Voss' class have that's not in his book?
medell··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life

medell··on Airbnb introduces new search tools for business travelers
Good point about not being rated back! For me, I like that AirBnB's are available in much more locations, and often at a lower cost. And for longer stays, it's nice having a kitchen which not all hotels have, and when they do you pay a hefty premium for it.
medell··on Spaced Repetition
I think you meant Gabriel Werner's excellent Fluent Forever.
medell··on Mental Health App Talkspace Raises $50M
It's not for everyone, but the hourly cost for a therapist is typically between $90-$200. Also these new services could be covered under some insurance programs (I'm curious for some data points here).
medell··on Open Sourcing Peloton, Uber’s Unified Resource Scheduler
...and https://www.peloton.com and their oil & gas software.
medell··on Ticketmaster recruits pros for secret scalper program
Assuming artists could predict demand and supply (versus spending time creating music), if they become popular, with this simplified logic they should only play large venues (which Live Nation controls) on back-to-back nights in primarily big cities. And if they were mainly concerned about money (which some are) then they'd only play the largest cities every year. There are only so many tour days in a year, how would they split their time?

That's not a music culture I'd want to be part of.

medell··on Ticketmaster recruits pros for secret scalper program
Some artists want their concerts to be accessible. Not every creator is in the maximizing profit mindset.
medell··on Ticketmaster recruits pros for secret scalper program
Exactly, it's not always about maximizing profit. Artists also to play for their fans. This is one of the main reasons artists have fan club email lists, to let actual fans get first go at tickets before the public sale date. Of course, there's nothing stopping scalpers from signing up.
medell··on Maybe Your Sleep Problem Isn’t a Problem
Yes, but I couldn't find where Matthew Walker says that.
medell··on Maybe Your Sleep Problem Isn’t a Problem
Isn't he claiming the opposite? (But I don't have the book to dig into the sources):

This brief descent from high-degree wakefulness to low-level alertness reflects an innate drive to be asleep and napping in the afternoon, and not working. It appears to be a normal part of the daily rhythm of life.

medell··on Maybe Your Sleep Problem Isn’t a Problem
Matthew Walker's excerpt on biphasic sleep: https://delanceyplace.com/view-archives.php?p=3524 TL;DR: There's evidence of cultures untouched by electricity sleeping 7 hours at night with a 30-60min afternoon nap, which he calls biphasic sleep, with some tribes switching to monophasic in cooler months. All humans have a hardwired dip in midafternoon alertness.

medell··on Repair cafés waging war on throwaway culture
It's one thing to charge to move the waste to a landfill, it's another to price in the long term (difficult to quantify) environmental costs (manufacturing pollution, land & water contamination, depletion of resources, etc). I'd be curious to see how much the disposal costs reflect total costs and whether some areas are subsidized.
medell··on Repair cafés waging war on throwaway culture
Great idea. I'd also like to see a tax based on environmental cost, the way some jurisdictions have "disposal fees" for certain electronics like printers.

The first thing that comes to mind are the throw away toys and gag gifts and dollar store items, but extends to anything that is poorly made or single-use, especially things where the battery is not meant to be replaced.

The burden needs to be put on manufacturer's creating more waste into the world.
