meddlepal··on ANSI escape codes (2019)
Indeed, this was one of those undocumented but everyone sort of knew features in Quake-engine based games.

Everyone just learned it through asking usually in the multiplayer chat.

meddlepal··on GraalVM 21.0 Introduces a JVM Written in Java
Green fielding on a new language is really not an option for the vast majority of software. To that point you are not really a target user for this if you can just up and switch stacks like that.
meddlepal··on 18.7 Million Americans Vaccinated
The apocalypse scenario is unlikely with the population having some resistance to the virus after vaccination even if new variants possibly render the vaccine less effective. We obviously do not have enough data yet to understand the vaccine's efficacy against these new strains but a lot of scientists are saying it will be "good enough" while we work on vaccines to handle the variants.

If this thing can basically be treated no differently than the common cold once vaccinated by most people and in the outliers something a little worse there will be no popular support to continue draconian lock down measures.

The goal is to stop the bleeding. The patient is on the floor right now and haemorrhaging liters blood. We want to stabilize the patient and let them get on with their life as quickly as possible. We cannot let perfect be the enemy of "Good Enough" here.

meddlepal··on Apple Car: For Real This Time?
Havent you basically just described a lease with no down payment and a flexible cancellation policy?
meddlepal··on Pfizer vaccine appears effective against mutation in new coronavirus variants
I think Parents point was that eventually we will have to give up on panic mode and accept deaths from this each year.
meddlepal··on Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo, but got laughed out of the room
As others mentioned, not owned by Nintendo, but also Rare was sort of spent as a creative force by the time they were purchased in 2002.

They lost a lot of developers to Free Radical.

I'm not sure what Microsoft acquired with Rare because besides Viva Pinata and Sea of Thieves the company has basically produced junk over the last eighteen years. They're not even in control of their main IP: Perfect Dark as Microsoft has parcelled that out to another studio for the reboot.

meddlepal··on Startup Studios
Define successful in your second paragraph? Are you only considering traditional VC unicorn-type startups successful or something else?
meddlepal··on FDA statement on following the authorized dosing schedules for Covid-19 vaccines
This is what I don't understand... why didn't we run several parallel studies for different dosages and time frames? I highly doubt there was a shortage in the pool of people willing to sacrifice themselves.
meddlepal··on A comparison of city building games
You might enjoy NewCity on Steam
meddlepal··on A comparison of city building games
Check out NewCity on Steam if you want a pretty cool advanced SimCity-esque builder. Its quite advanced for early-access.
meddlepal··on A megacorp is not your dream job
Neither, just a minor character of low plot importance.
meddlepal··on A megacorp is not your dream job
Perhaps this isn't appealing to a certain mindset, and I'd probably go crazy myself, but I definitely know plenty of engineers that would love this and work for these kind of companies. Low effort, highly stable pay. Exceeding the bar and earning your 2-10% bonus every year while still raking in 120K+ base w/ health benefits and an OK 401k match.
meddlepal··on Why Jira Sucks
Sure, with probably very different stability and risk profiles as well as entrance requirements.
meddlepal··on Why Jira Sucks
Theres worse things to be than a highly paid assembly line robot that also likely has vacation time, health insurance, a 401k and the option to walk away from one factory to work at another.
meddlepal··on Architecture of the Game Boy Advance
And... a reminder that I should go reply Golden Sun as I found my GBA SP while visiting the parents for Christmas.
meddlepal··on Nobody says hi in San Francisco
Perhaps, but it's a practical observation. It's the same for most of the major Northern cities including Boston and Chicago.
meddlepal··on Comic Mono
I like Comic Sans. I'm still waiting to run into someone who uses it for their IDE/editor/terminal font.
meddlepal··on Bare-Metal Kubernetes with K3s
Terraform is free and opensource?

Or are you making a metacomment about Terraform being painful at times?

meddlepal··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
I leased a 2020 Mazda 3 precisely for this reason... I want tactile feedback from my car's controls so I can keep my eyes on the road.
meddlepal··on CD Projekt Conference Call with the Management Board [pdf] (Dec 14)
PC here, agree it's fun and I think some people are definitely expecting GTA from a developer that has absolutely no experience making something like GTA.

GTA is GTA because Rockstar perfected the formula and the engine over several iterations of the game. I'm sure every GTA is a mountain of work to create, but its a considerably smaller mountain than starting from scratch.

But putting GTA aside, I don't think CDPR ever promised to create a Cyberpunk-GTA clone.

There's a lot of small bugs. It doesn't run particularly well, but I'll say it again - the core game is fun and story well written. I'm taking a break, but I look forward to revisiting after the first few big patches.

Edit: One thing that's always worked for me is to amortize the cost of purchase by time played. If I get only six hours of Cyberpunk 2077 played at $60. That's 10/hr for entertainment... which is better than a lot of stuff.

I'll probably sink 50 or 60 hours into the game completing the main story. That's $1/hr of entertainment... ridiculously good value.

Gamers are so cranky.

meddlepal··on Death by 1000 layers: the perils of over-abstraction in Java (2017)
I used to be a Java developer now turned mostly to Go and this is one of the things I dont miss at all about Java. So much abstraction and often not for good reasons.

Theres a lot of stuff I miss about Java but the culture of layers is not one of them.

meddlepal··on Red Hat Goes Full IBM and Says Farewell to CentOS
Article kind of hints at it but I suspect RHEL is going to get a new licensing model to capture the CentOS crowd under the RHEL umbrella. Once that's done it will be easier to upsell support contracts since they'll have the users in their license DB.
meddlepal··on The Tragic Tale of DEC, the Computing Giant That Died Too Soon
Cutler's a legend and only because he didn't design an open-source OS is he basically forgotten by everyone except OS architects.
meddlepal··on US House passes federal cannabis decriminalisation bill
Unlikely.
meddlepal··on US House passes federal cannabis decriminalisation bill
It won't pass the Senate floor. Absolutely pointless.
meddlepal··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
Every time the EU does something like this it makes it even more attractive to not run a business there.
meddlepal··on Microsoft is working on an Android subsystem for Windows 10
WSL1 is _not_ deprecated. it is just recommended you use WSL2 since theres a wide range of incompatibilities in WSL1 with various Linux tools. However if all you need is a basic toolchain in some ways it’s superior to WSL2 because it doesn’t require a VM.

meddlepal··on Ask HN: I have $1M cash in my bank. How can I stretch it so I can retire?
People who judge how others spend their hard earned money are repulsive.
