meddlepal··on Java 16
I think that is by design due to reflection needs. Hard to prune unused code when it might be called reflectively at any time.
meddlepal··on Java 16
I do not believe they are on the roadmap at all.
meddlepal··on Java 16
If you're doing green field JVM developer and NOT using big frameworks like Spring or an app server it is pretty safe to use the intermediate releases.
meddlepal··on Java 16
Basically there's six month feature releases but every five or six releases there's going to be an LTS release. Most companies use the LTS releases. Next big LTS release is later this year.
meddlepal··on Java 16
I think the reaction has been more to Kotlin than Scala.
meddlepal··on GeForce RTX 3060 Ethereum Mining Restrictions Have Been Broken
Boo hoo? Whats your point? Nobody has a human right to affordable graphics cards.
meddlepal··on Mozilla plans to remove the Compact Density option from Firefox's Customize menu
The trend towards killing desktop individualism started with Steve Jobs and Mac OS X Aqua interface. Making computing “pretty” became the imperative design criteria. That meant heavily curtailing what things people could customize.
meddlepal··on The Roblox Microverse
Your last comment nails it. But I think its also a Hn trope at this point to have a huge blindspot for social platforms and media companies... the demographic here tends to not grok their value appeal to the broader public.

Basically if you followed HN purely for investing advice you would probably have missed out on all of the major social media and new media platforms of the last 10-15 years.

meddlepal··on The Roblox Microverse
By what metric? It made a lot of money and thats the only thing that matters.
meddlepal··on When the prison banned board games, we played chess in our minds
> I'm hoping there's some broad reform coming for jails and prisons in the US.

Doubtful. Prison reform isn't popular at all amongst voting blocs that matter to politicians and it's a hard sell to the public tuned into a "safety first" and "lock 'em up and throw away the key" attitude.

meddlepal··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
What is up with the comments in this thread? Feels like tons of them are bot written. Weird attacks on Bill Gates and Microsoft all over the place.
meddlepal··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
Not once Proof of Stake is adopted next year (hopefully).
meddlepal··on Reflections on IDEA vs VS Code
Email me your MS alias and I'll reach out over Teams on Monday. Email is my profile.
meddlepal··on Reflections on IDEA vs VS Code
I dont know how you’re productive with VS Code and Go... I watch my coworkers live code with it sometimes and they are struggling. The lang server crashes constantly and stuff like autoimports or code complete barely works. I sometimes want to scream while watching them struggle.
meddlepal··on Google Cloud products in 4 words or less
What's the use case for something like "VMWare on Google Compute" is it just a API shim to translate VMWare API calls to GCE for companies that are trying to lift and shift to the cloud?
meddlepal··on Almost 40% of U.S. Consumers Trust Online Reviews Less Than They Did 5 Years Ago
with Reddit tho you can look through a users post history to see how likely they are a bot.

I'm not saying its perfect by any stretch.

meddlepal··on Almost 40% of U.S. Consumers Trust Online Reviews Less Than They Did 5 Years Ago
I basically always go to Reddit now for reviews... even if companies are astroturfing their as well, there's usually more honesty in the reviews than whatever is on the vendor's site.
meddlepal··on Bash_unit – bash unit testing framework
Portability is not important in most cases. Most shell scripts are written for and run on a single platform usually as setup or teardown for something else.
meddlepal··on Fish Shell 3.2
I used fish for a couple years but switched back to zsh. I found the incompatibilities with bash/zsh to be annoying at times and finally just decided to do the "When in Rome do as the Romans" do thing and adopt zsh.
meddlepal··on Hunting two PDP-1 photos (which are not what they seem)
I keep eyeballing the railroad track but that feels like HO and not O guage.

The track spacing doesn’t look right for O, also in 1961 im not sure two rail O gauge would be common... O usually has a third rail.

Could also be OO gauge, but that is rare in the US.

meddlepal··on Airbnb will build a new tech hub in Atlanta
I mentioned this in a different comment. Its a major tech hub, but not in a way that would be apparent to your average HN software dev. Boston/Cambridge is THE bioengineering hub of the US.
meddlepal··on Airbnb will build a new tech hub in Atlanta
Bostons a life sciences hub and basically the only game in town for serious bioengineering. Different ballgame compared to the kind of tech that gets talked about on HN usually which is basically B2B or B2C SaaS.
meddlepal··on VSI OpenVMS v9.0-G Released (x86 port)
If you squint you could argue Windows NT is basically a cousin of VMS considering its origins and principle architect.
meddlepal··on Golang generics proposal has been accepted
Yea basically they're implementing Java-lite generics. I'm not sure what they have been waiting for exactly...
meddlepal··on EPA Takes Action to Protect Scientific Integrity
Temporarily reviewing until 2024 or 2028.
meddlepal··on GitHub experiencing issues with actions, pull requests, packages
It's a massive company with a multi-decade history. There's probably some historical truth to it, but yea, it is not the current reality.
meddlepal··on GitHub experiencing issues with actions, pull requests, packages
A lot has changed in the last decade
meddlepal··on GitHub experiencing issues with actions, pull requests, packages
Microsoft does not have a consistent internal stack nor is anyone "encouraged" to use .NET. I don't know where this idea that Microsoft's online services all use .NET, for example, my team which delivers a large service as part of a top-level Azure offering is mostly all Go.
meddlepal··on Nevada bill would allow tech companies to create governments
Freedom implies many different things to people. Freedom to choose not to live in this company town is an option.

The freedom to not do something is basically the only freedom Americans consistently apply to things usually.

meddlepal··on Sea Levels Are Rising Faster Than Most Pessimistic Forecasts
Bingo. This is a problem every time scientists run to the media to explain the latest new bad discovery.
