meatsock··on Restoring Y Combinator's Xerox Alto, day 4: What's running on the system
this is an excellent project that's great fun to watch the progress of. keep up the great work.

i have no experience with altos but i have been wondering -- on day one of the restore, it was noted the alto in question had some modifications from stock issue[1], could the booting issues be related to the microcode or wiring changes necessary to support those modifications? is it trying to boot off of the now missing trident drive?

[1] from http://www.righto.com/2016/06/restoring-y-combinators-xerox-... "I suspect that the Y Combinator Alto originally had both a Trident drive and a Diablo drive (as well as four Orbit boards to drive a laser printer)"

meatsock··on Ask HN: How do you use Amazon Echo?
it's a good solution to listening to the radio for me, it'll tune in any fm or am station by call letters, so i can keep up with news and everything. its great to be able to tune in more than just the local stations. a young relative loves to hear new jokes on echo as well.

meatsock··on The Turbo-Encabulator in Industry (1944)
good advice, fascinatingly it turns out the whole thing was part of the development of the IFB, the earpiece in common use on every tv news show: The turboencabulator skit was originally intended to demonstrate the usefulness of earpiece radios as a replacement for cue cards when actors are delivering lines for a video. Bud Haggart wanted to show that you could use the earpiece effectively even when the lines get ridiculously difficult to follow, so he used the turboencabulator as a subject because it'd been a running gag in the engineering community ever since its first technical description was published by John Hellins Quick in 1944.
