mdtancsa··on George Orwell’s 1940 Review of Mein Kampf
I am surprised no one has mentioned Paul Bloom's "Sweet Spot". He looks at the psychology behind chosen pain / suffering / struggle (e.g. running a marathon ) https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/56922622-the-sweet-sp...
mdtancsa··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
I wonder if I could build and app / service for them -- TSOAS (aka Turn Shit Off As a Service) and charge them a small monthly fee to do it. BMW should be in the business of building cars, not pissing off people. They could outsource that to me as a service!
mdtancsa··on Zrepl on Rsync.net
zrepl is awesome!! I have been using it for some time with excellent results to manage a lot (for my org anyways) of backups. Glad to hear rsync is making it available

I guess my question is what is probable rather than possible or is that a risk that's even addressable to any reasonable degree
mdtancsa··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
I am totally fine with FTL. My point is, if you have FTL travel, but the tech at the time cant invent a flashlight to illuminate a cave for more than 10m, or even have tech that allow them to see every imaginable detail etc... Dont create lazy tension points that are built on fumbling around in the dark due to inadequate lighting.
mdtancsa··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
I can usually forgive some tech contradiction details, but its really annoying when there is faster than light travel... But to create contrived suspense because no technology exists to make a flashlight strong enough to illuminate a cave for 10m ??!?!
mdtancsa··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
I great term I came across in the retail gas industry is "hostile purchase"... as in no one "wants" to buy gas in the sense that you wake up one day and think "Oh boy, I can hardly wait to go out and get some 87 octane today" and after the purchase, "wow, that was awesome gas!"...
mdtancsa··on The void in Calgary: How office towers emptied in a once bustling downtown
The above added costs as well as the challenge of getting it to refineries. Lack of pipeline capacity to the coast (particularly Texas) is a big factor too.

Its partially there. C and D are still not in the global tables according to routeviews ie. 185.89.219.12 is still not being advertised to anyone. My peers to them in Toronto have routes from them, but not sure how far they are supposed to go inside their network. (past hop 2 is them)

mdtancsa··on The mutation that helps Delta spread
for what its worth, I had AZ as my first shot and it was pretty rough for 36 hours and then I was fine. My second shot of pfizer 8 weeks later barely left a sore spot on my arm. Not sure what if anything it means, but curious what will happen if I get a 3rd.
mdtancsa··on The mutation that helps Delta spread
I am in the same boat with glasses. In the winter, I use some decent quality medical tape across the top of the mask to prevent fogging. The 3M medical paper tape works really well and is not too sticky and doesnt irritate my skin.

mdtancsa··on Best performing assets against inflation
There is an assumption too for the long term that you will pick the right market and time it right. Things looked amazing in Buffalo, Cleveland and Detroit for places to invest if you bought in the 50s. Same with New York City. If you had to unload your property in the late 70s, it didnt seem like a great investment. If you could buy and hold in the 70s, and unload 2006, looks good :)

mdtancsa··on Actively speaking two languages protects against cognitive impairment
its been a while since I heard the doc, but I dont think it was so much a "lets all learn another language" as opposed to looking what might be happening in the brain to cause such an odd disparity in how the disease manifests itself.
mdtancsa··on Actively speaking two languages protects against cognitive impairment
I cant find the episode now, but a few years ago an episode CBC's science show Quirks and Quarks interviewed a researcher that found being bilingual seemed to delay the onset of dementia by a couple of years. Although it doesnt sound like much, from a public policy pov, its pretty significant when you look at what that can mean for quality of life as well as costs for our public health system.

Not sure. It might be younger people are more likely to take stronger positions so that they go out and protest? If you use voter participation as a proxy for moral engagement, kids as a whole dont seem to care as much as older people. https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/newsroom/press-kit...

mdtancsa··on First Confirmed Denisovan Skull Piece Found
There is a really fascinating (IMHO) podcast about the use of modern DNA analysis and the insights into ancient populations on the After-On podcast with David Reich https://after-on.com/episodes-31-60/034 Up until podcast, I didnt even know there was a branch called Denisovans. Although not generally a big interest of mine, I found it interesting enough to read Reich's book which was a fascinating detective story and a very new view onto ancient history.
