mdekkers··on Court: Cloudflare Is Liable for Pirate Site, but Not as a DNS Provider
> That happens Cloudflare loses lots of customers.

A couple of PoPs perhaps, but a lot of customers?

mdekkers··on GitHub is investigating an incident with Pull Requests, Issues and Webhooks
> Before the MS acquisition, Github didn't even have emoji reactions.

I have never, ever in my professional life thought “I need an emoji for this”

mdekkers··on Q* Hypothesis: Enhancing Reasoning, Rewards, and Synthetic Data
I’m not making any claims about the danger or lack of danger. Anyway, in the absence of specifics, this is a boring conversation.
mdekkers··on Q* Hypothesis: Enhancing Reasoning, Rewards, and Synthetic Data
Dangerous, how? All this vague handwavey fear mongering doesn’t really do it for me. Specifics are more my thing.
mdekkers··on Community Contribution at GitLab
Where I live is a private decision. That should have zero influence on how much they pay me. To me, that comes across as “we will determine your standard of living” and that is incredibly toxic.
mdekkers··on Community Contribution at GitLab
For some reason I keep getting job offers from Gitlab and that salary nonsense is always a hard pass. Whatever do they get off reaching into my private life like that. That isn’t the only thing in their handbook that makes me go hmmm and all in it doesn’t come across as a place id like to work or a leadership team I would respect.
mdekkers··on Q* Hypothesis: Enhancing Reasoning, Rewards, and Synthetic Data
> it is to our detriment that we don't take that more seriously.

Why?

mdekkers··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Very disappointing outcome indeed. Larry Summers is the Architect of the modern Russian Oligarchy[1] and responsible for an incredible amount of human suffering as well as gross financial disparity both in the USA as well as the rest of the world.

Not someone I would like to see running the world’s leading AI company

Regardless of context, this is an incredibly demeaning comment. Shame on you

mdekkers··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
Can you, you know, bring facts and data to this discussion, as opposed to vague handwaving of weird accusations? Altman has been doing an amazing job at running the business he co-founded, and “instability” isn’t something _anyone_ at any side of the discussion is accusing him of.

What is this instability, in your view? And how is this “desired stability” going to come back?

mdekkers··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
It is likely that wherever Altman goes next, @gdb would follow, and _he_ is deeply loved by many at OAI (but so is Altman).

CEOs should be judged by their vision for the company, their ability to execute on that vision, bringing in funding, and building the best executive team for that job. That is what Altman brings to the table.

You make it seem that wanting to make money is a zero-sum game, which is a narrow view to take - you can be heavily emotionally and intellectually invested in what you do for a living and wanting to be financially independent at the same time. You also appear to find it “disturbing” that people support someone that is doing a good job - there has always been a difference between marketing and operations, and it is rather weird you find that disturbing - and appreciate stability, or love working for a team that gets shit done.

To address your initial strawman, why would workers quit when the boss leaves? Besides all the normal reasons listed above, they also might not like the remaining folks, or they may have lost faith in those folks, given the epic clusterfuck they turned this whole thing into. All other issues aside, if I would see my leadership team fuck up this badly, on so many levels, i’d be getting right out of dodge.

These are all common sense, adult considerations for anyone that has an IQ and age above room temperature and that has held down a job that has to pay the bills, and combining that with your general tone of voice, I’m going to take a wild leap here and posit that you may not be asking these questions in good faith.

mdekkers··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
I would switch, but not because of Altman backing or not. I would switch if their strategy were to be to progress at pace. I’m not big on AI safety as it is parroted these days, I just want more AI, faster.
mdekkers··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
Sounds like good news to all the others in the field.
mdekkers··on Berkeley Mono Typeface
Coincidentally I read a comment today along the lines of “at HN, Cynicism-is-Intelligence” which really hit the nail on the head for me. This isn’t at all a nice community, overall.
mdekkers··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
I’m pretty sure there are contracts, and one way or another, everyone would get a stay on everyone else and nothing would happen for years except court cases
mdekkers··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
You can do everything by the rules, and still do the wrong thing
mdekkers··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
I read somewhere that the CTO wasn’t at all the best pick for interim CEO, but they couldn’t find anyone else that was in their camp in a hurry. Nothing about this looks like they did their homework and thought this through. If they _had_ done those things, MSFT wouldn’t be as pissed as they are right now.
mdekkers··on Your small imprecise ask is a big waste of their time
Where i’m from, if your manager literally states “you are ordered to do xyz” that manager will be fired. It’s not the fucking military.
mdekkers··on Your small imprecise ask is a big waste of their time
The only time I have ever been “ordered” to do something was for an American middle manager (not in my line) in an American company. “Haha get fucked” wasn’t the answer he was expecting, but my non American manager told him the same thing when he went to demand I’d get fired.
mdekkers··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it

You are picking out a specific use-case as an invalidation of a wide idea and concept. “This is thos _one thing_ an LLM cannot do for us so all of it is useless.

mdekkers··on Seeing like a bank
I genuinely don’t know where to begin with addressing this level of ignorance. All Central Banks, including the Bank of Lithuania, are governed by the European Central Bank. Passporting works because of an equality principle.

Lithuania has worked hard to become a fintech hub for Europe, and that isn’t based on a poor regulatory regime.

If you can bring actual facts to the table as to why the Lithuania banking license is inferior, we can have a discussion. Now you are just spouting baseless “Lithuania banking license is bad because of Lithuania” nonsense.

mdekkers··on Oh my poor business logic
The issue here is offering up #3 “It will be late, broken and other features will break” means you are not delivering anything of value, so it is not an option. Offering #3 just communicates “this can be done at a cost that is not relevant to you” as opposed to “there is no way to achieve the stated outcomes”

Offering #3 is absolutely not a business or management problem, this is something you are doing wrong.

mdekkers··on Seeing like a bank
Revolut has a banking license, at least in Europe
mdekkers··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
The last few years have been brutal in many ways.
mdekkers··on AI toy to add more Michael Bay to a scene
This produces text.
mdekkers··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Passionate? Nothing, anymore. The last bunch of years has been a long, never-ending series of setbacks and knock-backs that have drained my emotional, professional, and financial resources in a relentless manner. Along the way I appear to have completely lost my passion and drive for everything. Some people are completely dependent on me, and if it wasn’t for them, I’d check out already - this ride is not fun anymore.
mdekkers··on Show HN: WireHub – easily create and share WireGuard networks
> If you've been that far you might as well view-source on WireHub and see for yourself ;)

This isn’t a service I currently understand I need - I already have wgeasy and the site didn’t make it clear to me how this was better or different, so I don’t really have time to evaluate. I didn’t want to sign up for the beta if I wasn’t going to use it :)

I did have questions around your future monetisation approach and licensing, but also did not find ready answers.

mdekkers··on Show HN: WireHub – easily create and share WireGuard networks
This looks incredibly similar to wg-easy, which I see you have cloned in your github repo as well. Is this simply a SaaS-y frontend to wg-easy, or something different all together?

> Did you miss the World War that's currently on...?

Yes. What World War? I don’t think the number of shooting conflicts going on right now significantly exceeds the number of shooting conflicts that have been going on since 1950. Here is some information: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_armed_confli... and please stop spreading misinformation.
