md81544··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
Looks good but no way I'd pay a subscription for a utility.
md81544··on Dumb website only lets one user in at a time
I'm seeing:

" failed to start application on imherefor.me

This is most likely because your project has a code error.
Check your project logs, fix the error and try again. "
md81544··on Show HN: Write drum patterns, get randomized songs, then just share the URL
Nice! I'd love to be able to export a MIDI representation of a pattern. Any way to do it / any plans to incorporate?
md81544··on Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor
Yes, that was my experience too, maybe three years ago.
md81544··on Before Google kills free Gsuite accounts, why not offer a family email plan?
I was in the same situation as you - I couldn't upgrade because I'm not in the US. But there is the ability to get a support chat (after going through a couple of bot suggestions) - and they quickly took me through a different route to change billing country (even though I was, like you, on the legacy free version with no billing to date).

I've set up a one-user paid-for account for the time being, but the whole "rug-pull" has left a bad taste and I'll be on the lookout for an alternative solution from here on.

md81544··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Hacker News open links in a new tab?
I'd like to see this as a setting, so both camps can be appeased. I'm like OP, I keep forgetting to manually open in a new tab, then wonder where HN has gone after I close the tab again.
md81544··on An amusing story about a practical use of the null garbage collector
The blog entry is recent. It quotes from an email from 1995.
md81544··on Ask HN: When did you realize you needed glasses?
I was about 45... I was soldering some electronics and realised I couldn't see what I was doing. Presbyopia seemed to happen overnight :)
md81544··on www.reddit.com/etc/passwd
It works for me.
md81544··on A Method I’ve Used to Eliminate Bad Tech Hires
Yes, me too. I often find far better solutions to problems after backing off and deliberately not thinking about the issue.
md81544··on Ask HN: what code text editor do you enjoy the most?
I don't know why, I actively dislike gvim and use vim exclusively from the command line... even though it has the same functionality.
md81544··on Ask HN: Does anyone use Opera browser?
Yes, for testing! I like the easy way I can turn javascript on and off (F12)
md81544··on IE6 is Almost Dead. When are you dropping support?
I've recently dropped it; I simply say to clients that if they want their site to support a ten+ year old browser with little standards support then costs will increase. Haven't had a taker so far.
md81544··on Introduction to Gnome 3
"AN OVERVIEW AT A GLACE (sic)" ???
md81544··on 7 deadly sins of landing page design
1. Not showing any useful text, just a video
md81544··on Ask HN: What do you want for Christmas?
Fourthed!
md81544··on Ask HN: Why do you hate Quickbooks?
I haven't used it for several years now, but when I finally got shot of it, it was because (a) it was still buggy after numerous upgrades, (b) support was appalling and (c) it felt like Intuit simply wanted to gouge as much money out of me as possible - it felt like I was always paying for the latest, required, version. I don't know whether the situation has changed in recent years?
md81544··on Review my App: Cheque-up
You'll want to consider international users. I'm in France and, I'm sure, you're based Stateside. Will it work for a user such as me? I assume not... but if it will, tell the user, and give international dialing numbers.
md81544··on SparkleShare: Open Source Dropbox clone coming soon
Why C-sharp / mono ?? This could almost be done (on Linux at least) with a copy of rsync, git (for the revision control) and a shell script.
md81544··on Poll: Why do you use your particular OS?
I went through the Linux-only mindset for years but now pragmatism rules and I use Linux for development and general productivity, Macs for Garageband and testing my website on Safari, and Windows for Solitaire...

...and things like Garmin and Tom Tom software

md81544··on Ask HN: Why did this idea of Internet Time not work?
The UK isn't similarly unmetric. We're, admittedly, in a half-cocked halfway house where food is sold by the gram (and it's legally enforced to be that way), but beer is still by the pint, speed limits and distances are in miles, and temperature is optional. What a mess.
md81544··on Entertain users with your progress bar
"Imagine a progress bar that involved Dogbert using a mallet to pound the Pointy-Haired Boss into the ground" - I'm sorry Scott, but this just smacks too much of the hugely-reviled clippy. Treating your users like idiots might amuse a few, but will completely alienate the rest. Those of us with an IQ greater than a handful of salt might take the time (while the regular progress bar is creeping up) to do something else, more productive. Like read HN :)
md81544··on Ask YC: Why do people value digital goods less?
It's surely invevitable - if a "good" can easily be replicated exactly then its value plummets inexorably to zero.

The interesting question is how this will change our concepts when /material/ goods go down the same route. We already have very crude 3-D printers. Eventually we'll have 3-D "photocopiers". Imagine what will happen to, say, the luxury goods market then, when you can say to your friend, "can I copy your Rolex"?

md81544··on Poll: My religious beliefs are best summarized by...
Amen
