Thanks for asking! I'm a real engineer (Materials, Electrical, Solar, and getting into Chemical) and I'm working on a new project in the IoT space.

For the record, I export from EasyEDA to Gerber to PCBWay all the time.

PCBWay less likely to run into issues with weird design features and parts specs, but they are slower and more expensive.

Elecrow also takes Gerber’s from EasyEDA.

The business needn't be dead, and in fact the "lessee" could resell it at a higher price. The ORIGINAL NFT.

But most lessee dead businesses would eventually lose track of their credentials, and in fact many of the people simply lost interest or even up and died. A system whereby a dead link or a parking page results in "property tax auctions" would have kept the ecosystem healthier by moving out the dead wood.

Milliondollarapp (yes, I'm plugging a personal project, but for the sake of discussion) includes both of these approaches. Unfortunately it's been 90% complete for 7 years, and could really use a collaborator or someone with a more photogenic backstory to market it.

What made Milliondollarhomepage a sensation was its founder was trying to raise money to go to university, and that soft spot helped him sell out in about a month. He caught lightning in a bottle and good on him, even if he never ended up going to university for that purpose.

Maybe it’s the author’s second language, but they lost me when they likened an electrolyzer to a resistor. They have little in common.

Thermolyzer, maybe there’s something there.

If they hired me, I could make their project pass investor due diligence and more importantly actually work. Oh well.

You kidding?

If the two of you are having an affair, you can take the whole $250 hotel room and 30 minutes’ drive each way/each person and replace it with a $20 driverless taxi and literally get the entire sordid experience delivered to your door.

The “I don’t think that’ll be a thing” is adorable, like people thinking hotels that rent by the hour are geared toward people who just need a couple hours of sleep.

I see this blurring the lines between OnlyFans and transportation- get the transport service for free in exchange for the footage. Unless you’re terrible to watch, then it’s merely discounted.

If people watch Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, why wouldn’t they pay to watch this?

mchannon··on Commercial quantum computer identifies molecular candidate for better solar cell
H4 is impossible under any temperature or pressure. A hydrogen atom has one, count 'em, one electron to bond with. And bonds require, at minimum, two electrons shared between the two atoms. That's why H2 is pretty stable compared to monatomic H1. You'd have to rip up and throw out hundreds of years of chemistry for H4 to be possible.

In other words, the computer spit out nonsense.

This reminds me of the French guy in Holy Grail who giggles with his buddies "I told him we already got one.."

mchannon··on Ask HN: Selling 20% Equity for $100k?
No, let’s not assume that. $100k sounds like enough but it goes so fast. You’re betting a lot on a hunch.

If you spin your $100k as a founder’s share, it’s maybe less toxic. But investors want to see their money again, and revealing a share sale like this with a straight face is the economic equivalent of your wearing white makeup, a red rubber nose, a checked jacket that’s three sizes too large and clashes with the tie and pants, and size-85 shoes.

As an investor I’m taking a pass for this reason alone if you gave your first 20% away that cheap.

mchannon··on Ask HN: Selling 20% Equity for $100k?
Not clear if "potential investor" is the $100K or a future round of investment.

$500k is obscenely low for most companies, but not all. Are you building a lemonade stand?

An old expression is "any fool can sell a dollar for 90 cents." Your willingness to take such a low amount of money for a large amount of equity and control says a lot to future investors, and the news isn't good.

Can I now also invest $400K for the other 80%? (I'd never see it again because with 0% of the company left to sell, you have zero financial reason to stay involved in the company).

In the US, a modern day rule of thumb is $10M post money valuation for your first (seed) stock offering. Most states nudge you toward 10M shares for a corporation, the math is pretty simple for $1 a share.

If you can legally revise that sale to maybe 1% of your equity, or cancel the old corporation and create a brand new one where that money goes into the new one at 1%, it'd be perfectly fine with most investors.

mchannon··on Car rental throwing away money?
You're lying to at least one of us. Of course the counter exists to upsell. That may not be its sole or even primary reason for existing, but since the business exists to upsell, by attempting it every single time, how could the counter not? Tell you what, I'll believe you just as soon as your company stops all upselling everywhere. You don't even have to say which company. I'll notice, I promise. I'll start holding my breath now.

This "it is there as a convenience" is also embarrassingly intellectually dishonest. How convenient is it if I can't do business at all without it? Way more convenient for me than you, I'll just go to your competition, which I do, and I'm not the only one.

The rental car industry needs a Southwest analog. One that still plays the patronage games with airports in order to actually be where the customers are, but cuts out industry standard BS practices that all the incumbents keep imposing on passengers simply because they can.

My rental car should be waiting for me with the rental car agent IN the driver's seat, AT THE CURBSIDE PICKUP LANE, where he or she then drives to the rental car center to drop him- or herself off and hand me the keys. You've already lost me when you make me ride some loud smelly dirty bumpy overloaded community rental car shuttle that adds 15 minutes minimum to my trip, especially when I get to now wait another hour in line behind your counter and am basically captive in a bad neighborhood if I don't like the terms of the deal because you changed them at the last minute.

BTW, ever been upsold by a NASTY agent, happy to lie to you about what you're giving up by saying no to a size upgrade or extra insurance, and turning derisive for the inevitable rest of the 15 minute encounter? I have, too many times, too many companies. A smart tablet or smartphone isn't going to make me feel bad or unsafe for not giving you extra money you didn't earn.

My message to the car rental industry as a whole: stop lying. You're not as good at it as you used to be.

mchannon··on Car rental throwing away money?
I’m aware of gold membership and don’t want to deal with it, because it sounds scammy.

I’ll book Hertz through Priceline or another travel site solely based on price and end up in a situation where if being a gold member applied, I see no indication I could skip the counter anyway. Maybe that’s strictly a messaging area for improvement.

If your company was honestly trying to improve, you’d make everybody a lifetime member with their first rental purchase, not call it a membership at all, and make renting a car as easy as getting an Uber: through the phone, over the internet, silent, and almost zero people to slow the process.

mchannon··on Car rental throwing away money?
It’ll never happen, but the first car rental company that abandons the timeshare presentation model of make-the-customer-wait-an-eternity-while-we-try-to-upsell-them will make all their competitors abandon it.

Because once I hear Hertz, or whoever, isn’t going to make me wait an extra half an hour to rent a car anymore (while enduring high-pressure salesmen trying to get me to get the “extended coverage” which is overpriced at best and useless at worst), I’m thrilled to go with them exclusively, and perhaps even if they’re substantially more expensive. Other companies will be forced to follow suit.

But executives don’t get paid to abandon tried and true customerphobic business models in favor of one where you lose upsells and save on staff, but you more than make it up in volume.

Business travelers like me hate hate hate rental car counters at airports. They’re the seventh level of hell. I’ll take Ubers for about the same overall cost, and Turo as plan B. It’s been like this for the past 5 years.

I don’t doubt your sincerity in wanting to improve the car rental experience, but Sinclair’s law applies.

mchannon··on Ask HN: Build Own PC in 2023?
Consider your primary use case. For gaming, AMD tends to be the more popular choice because it offers (most of the time) more bang for the buck.

If you want to try your hand at hackintoshing, Intel is your easiest option. It's not a garbage platform either.

Not ripping open the static bags and handling each component myself would be akin to going on a big game hunt and hiring a skilled hunter to shoot the animal so you can pose with it. Based on your question I think you're in my boat more than the other person's.

There's a number of configurators online where you can painstakingly choose each component and make sure they work well together.

It can be very rewarding. My daily driver has been a homebuilt PC, built by me, for many years. 10/10 would recommend.

mchannon··on UK retail electricity prices hit -19p/kWh today
Aluminum smelting isn’t all that dispatchable.

During times of crisis, it can be idled, but the reduction units aren’t designed to turn on and off subject to the whims of the market- capital equipment and labor to run it aren’t going to work at a 10 percent duty factor.

mchannon··on Louis Rossmann: Autodesk turns lifetime licenses into subscriptions [video]
Perhaps the latter.

Certain types of screw convolving are essential to a number of my parts.

That feature is mostly now missing from the free version, though my existing files with it can change the parameters (though not add additional).

The 10 editable thing is just weird. It’s like having n light switches in your house and only 10 can be on at any given time (mechanically interlocked), but in exchange you get free electricity. While that’s a worthwhile deal for most, it’s hard to see how that incentivizes anything. It’s just mildly annoying.

mchannon··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
To the contrary, Stanford, for instance, has ~22% of its student body "White or Caucasian", when it used to be 40% in 2016. This swing didn't occur simply because white students stopped applying.

https://stanfordreview.org/stanfords-racial-engineering/

Stanford might be an outlier, but I don't see white applicants being negatively affected by this decision. Quite the opposite.

mchannon··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
If true, an in-person English fluency and personality interviewing process, even a supposedly race-blind one, tends to skew heavily against a majority of, but not all, Asian college applicants.

That’s probably what your theoretical proxy will look like, if you’re correct.

mchannon··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Double-digit increases of Asian students at top tier universities, primarily coming from decreases of nonwhite students.

Probably a modest reverse version of that at the lower tier universities.

Love the policy change or hate it, that’s what’s likely to happen.

mchannon··on Honda Monkey Breaks World Record Covering 4,183 Km on Single Tank
Liquid gasoline is actually pretty safe.

It’s the fumes that can cause an explosion.

A properly designed gas tank will prevent the formation of fumes, whether by having a “bladder” within (most modern cars do this) or perhaps some type of venting.

I’d consider it far more dangerous to be going 40mph under the prevailing speed limit on a highway you can’t go around, such as over a bridge. The tank is a minor consideration.

I also believe you could find a way to use bladders and fairings in your tank design such that it bulges out into a 50gal tank when starting off and gradually stretches and shrinks back into the existing profile and shape as the gas gets used up. A further mileage hit at first, but all bonus miles.

This is kind of sobering.

Standard male levels of testosterone are between 3-7 ng/mL.

Standard female levels of testosterone are between 0.1-0.7 ng/mL.

And you're over 10 ng/mL of this crap?

Even if this stuff is a fraction as bioactive as testosterone, having more of it might explain a few societal health trends.

Making a second, third, or fourth set of manuals would have obtained substantial economies of scale whether in the 20th or 21st centuries.

There was a time where PDF didn’t exist, there were no tools to create, let alone view or print manuals. Even when these became widespread, a number of troglodytes would get bent out of shape if their new appliance didn’t come with a (preferably bound!) paper manual. Most of these folks have either passed on or begrudgingly assimilated.

mchannon··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
I've had this experience before.

Believe it or not, I've also gotten takehomes which took multiple hours, involved some non-trivial data retrieval and management, and gotten rejected with less effort than it took them to prepare the ask.

Later I had a sinking suspicion that it was not a real position, what it was was three brogrammers who found a way to get unemployed rubes to write code for them, for free, so they could deliver it themselves without having the requisite talent.

Are you positive that didn't happen to you too?

mchannon··on Ask HN: What to do when feeling low-energy/tired during the day?
Blood serum testosterone levels.

Getting a good handle on your number of ng/dL is essential for both men and women.

mchannon··on Ask HN: What to do when feeling low-energy/tired during the day?
Get your T levels checked. Mine were way off (and still are).

Exercising 5X a week is good, are you pushing hard, packing on more weight, or simply going through the motions?

Focus on sleep hygiene. Try sleeping alone and in a pitch black silent room, or getting way closer to that. No phone, no TV, no alarm clock.

Although they're only too happy to sell you an almost lethal dose of melatonin over the counter in the US, some melatonin, time release and really low dose might help you make up for advanced age (we don't know how old you are).

Do you eat wheat, bread, noodles, potatoes? Do you juice or drink juice? Try cutting out all sugars and starches and replacing them with fresh fruit (NOT juice).

And try a caffeine fast. No caffeine, not even one, for a week.

Consider some HGH secretagogue peptides if you can find a reputable source (I tried some and they looked too professional to be shipping something other than what I ordered, and after testing, it was not peptides).

This is mostly a matter of testing a bunch of theories and finding one that works.
