mcast··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
Google was using CAPTCHA data to train its Street View photos for addresses and street names back in 2012*.

mcast··on Companies Requiring Full-Time In-Office Are Struggling to Recruit New Employees
I don't think companies in #4 are safe, mostly because commercial real estate is expensive. Consulting firms will advise them to either not renew building leases or have a hybrid/RTO policy as one of the first cost cutting measures.
mcast··on Growing Rat Neurons to Play Video Games [video]
That's true but I would wager most scientists don't stockpile on explosives and chemicals like cyanide and arscenic at home.
mcast··on Growing Rat Neurons to Play Video Games [video]
I'm not trying to slander them, they are very talented people. They are all people who know how to build dangerous things.
mcast··on Growing Rat Neurons to Play Video Games [video]
Thought Emporium, Nile Red, and Styropyro are YouTubers who are a few degrees away from being dangerous criminals (I say this in the lightest way possible) but channel their talents for educational videos.
mcast··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
It would probably make more sense for copyright fees to be proportional to the revenue the company makes. Disney paying $500 to license Mickey Mouse after 5 years while making millions isn't equitable for a small business copyrighting a toy brand for instance.
mcast··on Aspartame sweetener to be declared possible cancer risk by WHO, say reports
Vertasium has a great video on the invention of leaded gasoline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV3dnLzthDA
mcast··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
That type of home appreciation happens in larger US real estate markets as well, assuming you're willing to put a few hundred thousand into renovations. Everything has shot up tremendously post-COVID.
mcast··on False 911 Calls Increase During Festival as iOS Mistakes Dancing for Car Crashes
Not to mention, car manufacturers would try to gate this feature behind a paid subscription model like OnStar. The industry took far too long to require rearview backup cameras, it would take years to require companies to have a system connected to a cellular network to phone 911.

The personal phone is the best place to fit this feature because it already has cellular communications and can work in any mode of transportation.

mcast··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
It kind of makes sense considering the only viewport is on the opposite side of the submarine away from the PCs which interface with the controls.

Maybe the intent was for someone to peak out the window to perform a maneuver.

Still, I hope there was a wired controller as a backup just in case.

mcast··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
In that case, the script could be modified to archive all the comments into a local file -- you could restore all your books back to the library (Reddit) if you chose, once they stopped threatening customers with higher fees.

If people were really committed, they could "unionize" and have a centralized party which held access to their comments, but that would probably violate their ToS and would not set a good precedent for an open and free internet. Not to mention, Reddit could easily just block users from modifying/deleting old comments.

mcast··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
It probably would be a more effective campaign for subreddits to have their users wipe all their old comments (older than 1 year) than a temporary blackout for a few days.
mcast··on AWS us-east-1 down
Most AWS engineering is closest to (and tested in) us-west-2 (PDX) or us-east-2 (Ohio)
mcast··on Pixar reportedly conducts rare layoffs
Pixar movies used to have a very high standard for film critics. Rotten Tomatoes has Lightyear ranked as the 3rd worst Pixar movie behind Cars (https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/all-pixar-movies-...)
mcast··on TikTok is now banned in Montana
How would this even be technically enforced? It seems TikTok would have no reason to pay for any fines from the state.
mcast··on Google will soon let Pixel phones double as dashcams
You would still have a major blind spot if a child or small animal is directly behind your car. The NHTSA estimated it would save over 70 lives per year (an underestimate), which is invaluable considering the small cost.
mcast··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
Rental prices in San Diego are almost as high as Fremont/San Jose (5th most expensive rental city in CA). Also, considering it has one of the highest electricity rates in the country, it makes renting even more expensive than just the monthly rate.
mcast··on Wearing an eye mask during sleep improves episodic learning and alertness
Alternatively, IKEA makes a great little set of curtain tracks (VIDGA) you can attach to your ceiling to get full floor-to-ceiling blackout in a room, similar to many hotel rooms.
mcast··on Sal Khan: The amazing AI super tutor for students and teachers [video]
The possibilities are endless! Seeing Sal demonstrate how students could talk to old historical figures and ask them questions in their context was pretty fascinating.
mcast··on Sal Khan: The amazing AI super tutor for students and teachers [video]
I always wondered how an AI tutor could be "the great equalizer" for teaching kids from all socioeconomic backgrounds (and international students too). It's impossible for a classroom of 20-30 students to get 1:1 attention from a teacher.
mcast··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Thanks for sharing, those photographs are very clear and sharp (especially this one: https://pics.dllu.net/file/dllu-pics/boston-pcc.jpg) it seems to tickle my brain.
mcast··on Google Cloud region currently down due to water intrusion
AWS treats its availability zones very seriously, each zone has its own independent power substation, air conditioning, and fiber lines.

It's incredibly rare for multiple AZs to go down at once, especially since they are more than a few miles apart from each other.

mcast··on Lyft to cut 1,072 employees, or 26% of its workforce
Or you can take the light rail directly from the airport into the city for $2.50 (and presumably catch a cheaper taxi there).
mcast··on If Microsoft is doing so good why layoffs?
Jon Stewart is an incredible interviewer, he was able to expose Summers praising billions of dollars of corporate profits while completely disregarding people losing their jobs in almost the same sentence.
mcast··on If Microsoft is doing so good why layoffs?
It seems like collusion to appease the Fed to stop increasing rates.
mcast··on Google DeepMind
You mean Microsoft, right? OpenAI was publishing research papers until the MSFT partnership.
mcast··on Ask HN: People who were laid off or quit recently, how are you doing?
What exactly does a founding prompt engineer do?
mcast··on California Utilities Seek to Charge People Based on Income, Not Energy Usage
California utilities seek to charge more for higher profits*

What a surprise!

mcast··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
Who’s the target demographic for this? Surely they don’t want a 16 year old who has never used a screwdriver before.
mcast··on I worked at Google for -10 days
I think OP meant they’ll be moonlighting 2 jobs for 2 weeks.
