mbushey··on The California DMV Is Selling Drivers’ Personal Information
I moved from CA to MT a few months ago. Same experience. I've wanted to hug the DMV people here every time I've gone because they are so nice and helpful.
mbushey··on Tesla Cybertruck
The retail Hummer was basically a kit car using a Tahoe/Suburban frame.
mbushey··on An electric crate motor you can drop into your car
That would make it easier to recover. More weight = more traction.
mbushey··on Why Self-Checkout Is and Has Always Been the Worst
I LOVE self checkout. Faster, and I don't have to deal with a possible moron (exceptions being Trader Joes and Costco). I figured when they were introduced the purpose was to get people used to the concept so the switch to automatic RFID checkout totals would have less resistance. Still waiting...
mbushey··on Ansible ppa is serving incorrect version of ansible
Installing via pip gives the exact same version miss-match. Installing via git clone and running `source ./hacking/env-setup` gets a modern version (2.9.0.dev0) running.
mbushey··on What Is Idempotence?
I wrote a blog with this exact title from the standpoint of a SysAdmin/DevOps Engineer: https://www.sendthemtomir.com/blog/what-is-idempotence
mbushey··on Japan Is Betting Big on the Future of Hydrogen Cars
Bribes from the oil industry. Hydrogen (in the context of evs) has always been about disposing of money that otherwise would have gone into battery research.
mbushey··on Nvidia's $99 Jetson Nano Is an AI Computer for DIY Enthusiasts
I bought an Odriod once. It was DOA and at the insane shipping prices I just took it as a lesson learned to never buy Odroid again. I've gone through probably 20 Pi's and never had one DOA or even die for that matter.
mbushey··on Launch HN: AmpUp (YC W19) – A reservable electric car charging network
> From our analysis, with a competitive (to public charger) pricing of $3/hr

My 2012 Leaf takes 3 hours to fully charge on a L2 charger, and that gets me 35-40 miles range. $9 for 35-40 miles. My Camaro gets 20 miles to the gallon, it's significantly cheaper to put gas in the 320HP Camaro than pay this kind of rate for charging.

mbushey··on 2FA on the command line
I agree with you, however I'm the only user on my laptop so for the few milliseconds that oathtool is running it's not a problem for my use case.

$ time otp aws

otp aws 0.00s user 0.01s system 98% cpu 0.015 total

Even back in the 90's Mysql was able to hide the CLI supplied password from the process list. It would be cool if oathtool was able to do the same.

mbushey··on Running Istio on AWS with Kops
One oversight offhand is the installation of kubectl v1.13.0. Kops currently only installs v1.11 Kubernetes.

From https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/tools/install-kubectl/

You must use a kubectl version that is within one minor version difference of your cluster. For example, a v1.2 client should work with v1.1, v1.2, and v1.3 master.

mbushey··on Apache's Projects are all ugly and hard to use with tons of config
That's because they're mostly written in the monstrosity known as Java.
mbushey··on I kill every VPS I touch
Kind of strange considering I'm at work, it's a static IP, and work is a Fintec company owned by a bank. Anyway thanks for quickly resolving the issue; The server is up and I'm SSHed in.
mbushey··on Ask HN: Favorite CMS?
Grav is amazing for simple sites and my current favorite. I've used Drupal quite a bit for more complicated stuff; It's a beast. Wordpress is a nightmare technically but easy to use when it's working.
mbushey··on Idempotence: What is it and why should I care?
Here's a great blog on the subject: What is Idempotence? https://www.sendthemtomir.com/blog/what-is-idempotence
