mbrutsch··on Tamagothi (1997)

Thanks for that, I thought I was in another Berenstain time loop for a second.

mbrutsch··on Modern SQL: With – Organize Complex Queries
How do you feel Oracle's support for "with" is lacking? I use it on a daily basis, and it seems to work fine for me.
mbrutsch··on Techniques for dilution, misdirection and control of a internet forum (2012)
> Those topics are poisonous because they can't be driven to a conclusion in two paragraphs or less.

They are poison on voting sites because one side quickly becomes grey. Votes do nothing but squelch conversation, and many choose to self-censor to avoid that.

mbrutsch··on Techniques for dilution, misdirection and control of a internet forum (2012)
Anyone with anything mildly divisive to say left HN long ago.
mbrutsch··on A group of middle-aged whites in the U.S. is dying at a startling rate
> an increase in general despair and decline in quality of life.

Yet in our own country, suicide is treated as a "mental illness", and rarely does anyone acknowledge the circumstances which make suicide the rational option.

mbrutsch··on How We Uncovered the Real Identity Behind “Startup L. Jackson”
I'd prefer you just delete my account, but I know you are not allowed to do that. I'll just try to forget my login, since apparently people are allowed to be "uncivil" to both me and newbies, but the same courtesy is not extended to me.

Let's see, 1772/365... nope, not less than a year old. Nice insult to new accounts, though, very Passive-aGgressive.
mbrutsch··on Evernote cuts 47 employees and shuts down 3 offices
Thank you for the Zim plug. This will meet my needs nicely.
mbrutsch··on Medium Raises $57M
Don't be asinine.

> Deanonymizing them can cause them harm, ranging from getting fired to getting arrested to causing severe social strife.

Luckily I committed no crimes, or I would have had a hat trick.

> Not your decision to make.

There's actually a lot of debate and discussion about this issue; I am always surprised at the number and tenor of those who wholeheartedly support making this kind of decision.

mbrutsch··on How We Uncovered the Real Identity Behind “Startup L. Jackson”
> I think there's a clear difference between correlating a pseudonym to a real-life identity, and malicious "doxing" that could cause harm.

Everyone thinks that until it happens to them. Trust me on this.

mbrutsch··on Medium Raises $57M
And I'd count it as "using my content in a way I did not authorize", but HN seems okay with that.

"do their job"

Why is

> This may include promoting your content with partner companies or services for broader broadcast, distribution, or publication.

"doing their job"? What if I do not want them to do that with my content? Have I ceded my control? Can I tell them not to do so?

Damn shame this excludes all my censored content.

Devices that function when the power has been disconnected would be wonderful energy-saving devices.
mbrutsch··on The Drug-Violence Myth
Sadly, our world-class political system is based entirely upon feelz, with no minimum qualifications for participation.
mbrutsch··on The brains of lonely people respond more negatively to social stimuli
With the exception of the fine Tea Party and their gatherings, we don't have those things.
mbrutsch··on The brains of lonely people respond more negatively to social stimuli
I just never came out. No issues here <twitch>
mbrutsch··on The brains of lonely people respond more negatively to social stimuli
6 cats, 2 dogs, one wife, no friends, what more could any insane homeworker ask for?
mbrutsch··on “On Accident” or “By Accident”?
I never heard or read it in the US until recently (15 years-ish).
mbrutsch··on The brains of lonely people respond more negatively to social stimuli
Some of us lack social skills. I've struggled my entire life with this problem, and have barely learned to "fake it" well enough to pass as a normie.

Also, small towns in the South offer only one place for communal gatherings, church, and I don't do church.

mbrutsch··on Most Americans will get a wrong or late diagnosis at least once in their lives
It wouldn't be applesauce if you replaced apples with oranges, either.
mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
Now all I have to worry about is keeping up with inflation.
mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
> So I don't think this is something historically people have believed in youth and rejected in adulthood. It's only coming to a head now.

This isn't about "youth" vs "adulthood", most of the people who wish to deny the old their due are adults themselves. But I believe historically, when resources get tight, the "community" doesn't mind putting their elders on an ice floe and letting them go, so that the current generation can have more.

mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
Pssh. Democracy is 3 wolves and sheep voting on what's for dinner. It is not the magical panacea everyone assumes.
mbrutsch··on Ask HN: How do you remember syntax?
My somewhat faulty short-term memory retains the information once it's in active use. I reckon it's like some sort of "brain cache with garbage collection". For example, I've been in Ruby for the last 3 years, and I don't have to google syntax as often as I did 2 years ago. Compare that with my last gig, writing pawn software. I used to know pawn laws quite well, now I'd be hard pressed to recall mush of that info.
mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
Sweet, thanks. Looks like I'll get $2600/mo at age 70. If SSA holds out that long, I can live on that, but I am not hopeful.
mbrutsch··on Ask HN: How do you remember syntax?
I don't. Having been in the industry since the 1980s, I make little attempt to memorize the intricacies of whatever language my client is using. I know what I want to do and how I want to do it; Google can remember trivial things like syntax.
mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
How'd you get them figures? I'm 53, I'm curious how mine looks.
mbrutsch··on The End of Retirement
> While it's blindingly obvious that the current monolithic pyramid schemes used to move money from the young to the old will have to disappear,

A sentiment shared by the young. Until they get old.
