mbrochh··on Yann LeCun raises $1B to build AI that understands the physical world
I think we will all now witness that LeCun is just an impostor with an unbelievably overblown ego.

I predict that he will burn through the investment in not time (most of it will probably trickle into regulator pockets) and he will not have anything to show for in the end.

mbrochh··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
I'm afraid that ship has long sailed. The humans left on Twitter are all just copy pasting AI slop now...
mbrochh··on Reticulum, a secure and anonymous mesh networking stack
Yea, because he was dying.
mbrochh··on Google is dead. Where do we go now?
100% this. I used to be a "digital native". I guess I have migrated away from my native lands and now I am a boring old local again.
mbrochh··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
I am German and the three times I took an ICE from Cologne to Berlin and then back, EACH TIME I boarded at a wrong wagon. The entire system, their app, the signages at the tracks... it is all complete and utter dogshit.
mbrochh··on Toys with the highest play-time and lowest clean-up-time
I recently bought a XXL set for my almost 2yr old daughter... I don't get the hype. I think that the magnets are just not strong enough, so the structures that I was able to build are always super weak and would collapse if you just look at them from a funny angle...
mbrochh··on Alzheimer’s disease can be reversed in animal models? Study
Usual PSA: Don't wait for a cure for Alzheimers. Work towards not getting it in the first place. Alzheimers is "brain diabetes". You get it from consuming sugars and carbs. It can be easily avoided.
mbrochh··on Show HN: Vibium – Browser automation for AI and humans, by Selenium's creator
You might also want to look into Stagewright.
mbrochh··on Thin desires are eating life
Wow. Very cool to see one of Joan's posts here on HN. I have discovered his videos on Youtube half a year ago and every single time I think to myself "wow, what a banger". No idea if he uses AI to craft his scripts, but every single time I feel like he brings his arguments across extremely eloquently. Such a joy to listen to.

And of course one of the top comments is... shitting on the way this is written. HN never changes.

mbrochh··on PeerTube is recognized as a digital public good by Digital Public Goods Alliance
Is the UX even the issue with these competitors? The cost for bandwidth and storage and having fast enough servers is the real issue here.
mbrochh··on Pebble Index 01 – External memory for your brain
I wonder how did we get to this scientific age of magic and wonder and technology when people had nothing but pen & paper. Hell, for 10,000 years before that, we didn't even have pen & paper. Where did all those amazing thoughts go??

Also, I'm counting the days until the battery in one of those things bulges while someone is on an airplane... again...

mbrochh··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
Classic Vitalik logic. A giant mountain of word salad and he still somehow magically fails to name the fifth and most important group: Scammers.
mbrochh··on The story of DOGE, as told by federal workers
It is very plainly visible that society has not been benefited much from the public service of many of those people. In fact, it has declined dramatically.
mbrochh··on Internet Archive's big battle with music publishers ends in settlement
Ultimately, someone needs to build a 100% decentralized and automated version of it. Something like Nostr.
mbrochh··on Grapevine canes can be converted into plastic-like material that will decompose
Do we have enough grapevines to replace all plastic in the world? If we need to destroy ecosystems to plant more grapevines, forget about it.
mbrochh··on Repetitive negative thinking associated with cognitive decline in older adults
This sounds bogus.

What if something else causes negative thinking and then in the long run cognitive decline...

...like... eating excessive amounts of carbs and seed oils while also having a sedentary lifestyle and no exposure to the sun.

mbrochh··on I feel Apple has lost its alignment with me and other long-time customers
The problem is, these companies invest billions to find ways to lock you in, often using illegal ways abusing their monopolies.

"don't like it? buy the competition!" is easier said than done.

mbrochh··on iPhone dumbphone
This is exactly what has worked for me as well. Before this, the iPad was rotting in a corner for years, because the phone was just always available and I had consumed everything on the phone already, obliterating the need for the iPad.
mbrochh··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped
Time consider your party affiliation then.
mbrochh··on Immich – High performance self-hosted photo and video management
If you want cloud hosting and fully E2E encrypted by a team that deeply cares about privacy and security, try Ente. They also have Google Authenticator alternative called Ente Auth.
mbrochh··on Tesla changes meaning of 'Full Self-Driving', gives up on promise of autonomy
Uh... why don't they put the cameras... into the car (it works for human drivers)???
mbrochh··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
After their recent change in tune to retain data for longer and to train on our data, I deleted my account.

Try to do that. There is no easy way to delete your account. You need to reach out to their support via email. Incredibly obnoxious dark pattern. I hate OpenAI, but everything with Anthropic also smells fishy.

We need more and better players. I hope that XAi will give them all some good competition, but I have my doubts.

mbrochh··on We already live in social credit, we just don't call it that
Wow. Thank you for sharing this. I have never been to the US (Germany, Singapore)... this sounds just completely and utterly bonkers to me.
mbrochh··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
Not sure I have a satisfying answer. I didn't do too much research and did not compare all available options. Isn't Immich self-hosted? That rules it out for me, can't be bothered to run my own servers, I just want to pay a fair amount of money and get peace of mind in return.
mbrochh··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
Great effort! For photos I can highly recommend Ente. Fully E2E encrypted. Works on all systems, syncs reliably, has great on-device AI stuff to build a vector database of your images, has very good UI/UX and is reasonably priced. Once I had all my 20k+ photos uploaded into Ente, I was finally able to delete all my photos from iCloud and cancel my iCloud subscription.
mbrochh··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
Isn't that totally normal?

When I have to touch Android or Windows, I feel absolutely awful because I am used to MacOS and iOS.

Likewise, Android and Windows users will feel awful when having to use MacOS and iOS.

It's simply a matter of habit and experience.

Having used Windows and Android for 10+ years before switching to the Apple ecosystem, I can say with confidence though that MacOS is not weird at all. It makes far more sense than the insanity that is Windows/Android.

mbrochh··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
ooph. wouldn't the dust particles go through a whole lot of other bodily defense mechanisms before they reach actual lung cells?
mbrochh··on Jeep Introduces Pop-Up Ads That Appear Every Time You Stop
Once the cars are fully self-driving, this is exactly what will happen... just wait and see..
mbrochh··on Loyal workers are selectively and ironically targeted for exploitation
Holy shit, my wife is working for a mega corp and is currently experiencing EXACTLY this.

This is the reason why I will never join a company that has more than 100 employees. Once they get big, they all turn into cancer.

mbrochh··on Embeddings: What they are and why they matter
I'm working on something like this for my logseq notes as well.

My biggest question right now is: How much text should I turn into one embedding?

Every sentence?

A whole block of sentences that belong to one entire page in my notes app?
