mbirth··on The death of social media is the renaissance of RSS (2025)
I’ve setup a local RSSBridge instance and use its “CSS Selector Feed Expander” module to expand these feeds into full feeds.

They also have a public instance.

mbirth··on 19 States approved permanent daylight saving time
I loved the idea. However, the main issue was that it completely ignored the date.

While it worked fine in Western Europe - as i.Beats were based on the “Biel Mean Time” = GMT+1, people in the US would e.g. wake up at @584 on March 7 and eat dinner @125 on March 8.

mbirth··on TSA leaves passenger needing surgery after illegally forcing her through scanner
Yep, just think of those people in front of you, that pass the same several large signs telling them to make sure that all their liquids are in a 1 litre ziplock bag and have that bag ready for inspection (this is in Europe) … and then doing a surprised Pikachu when the security personell asks them about why their perfume isn’t in said bag. Then starting to repack their hand luggage while the whole queue has to wait and watch.

And you only experience those few people in front of you. The security staff has them all day long.

mbirth··on 70k Books Found in Hidden Library in This Germany Home (2023)
They didn’t go out of fashion. It’s just that some people emptied them to sell the books on flea markets, sometimes drunk people used those for their “business”; and sometimes, kids set them on fire. And this was just in a rather small town.
mbirth··on Hacking an old Kindle to display bus arrival times
A while ago I've rewritten TRMNL's Kindle-client from Bash into Lua, optimised it a bit and when doing a refresh every 5 minutes, my Kindle Paperwhite 10th gen now lasts about 5-6 days on a charge.

mbirth··on Running My Own XMPP Server
Latency isn’t that much of an issue. There might be greylisting for the initial message, but once the receiving server knows you, it’s pretty usable. And since everything is an email, you can “chat” with people that don’t use DeltaChat and they can reply using their normal email program. If you’re not using encryption, that is.
mbirth··on Running My Own XMPP Server
Isn’t that still email/SMTP under the hood - just optimised for fast delivery?

mbirth··on EU must become a 'genuine federation' to avoid deindustrialisation and decline
Is it, though? What’s so different between Thuringia and Saxony that they both need separate administrations?

Why is it, that when you move between states, your tax office needs to print out your records, send them to your new state's office, only for some poor soul to type them into their system because each state uses a different system without any common exchange format? Make it make sense!

mbirth··on Teaching my neighbor to keep the volume down

mbirth··on Mobile carriers can get your GPS location
This, combined with the 10% duty cycle limitation on the used frequencies is the main issue, I believe. Once the 10% are used up, a node basically has to go dead until it falls below 10% again. And with lots of messages about battery levels and other telemetry being sent and relayed, those 10% get used up fast.
mbirth··on Ask HN: Do you still use physical calculators?
There’s a 991CW 2nd edition out even. Because they’ve realised they forgot to make the different “apps” accessible by pressing a number button. In the original 991CW, you always have to use the arrow buttons to select the feature you want to use.
mbirth··on Apple, What Have You Done?
> There isn't really much about MacOS that sets itself apart these days.

Unless you’re using an iPhone and/or iPad. The Continuity feature, seamless copy&paste between devices, notification mirroring, iPhone mirroring, and being able to move my mouse cursor from my macOS onto the iPad are things I’d really miss when switching to a Linux desktop.

mbirth··on Tell HN: 2 years building a kids audio app as a solo dev – lessons learned
Regarding the Toniebox and custom audiobooks - do you know that there’s a tool to add audio files that can be triggered by custom NFC tags?

Here’s the talk about it:

And the project website:

There’s even a custom firmware that can send activity data to Home Assistant, can pull audio from a local server, etc.

mbirth··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
Early on, Lawnchair implemented a blacklist to hide apps they deemed “bad”. They only removed it after lots of protest from users. That has “burned” this launcher for me.

mbirth··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
You can use Siri to call custom Shortcuts which in turn can ask for more details if required. And now that Shortcuts can make use of the LLMs (Apple’s or ChatGPT), there are a lot more ways to make Siri smarter.
mbirth··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
I was more thinking about this being driven by the fact that Google pays Apple $20B a year for being the pre-selected search engine and this way, Apple still gets $19B and a free AI engine on top.
mbirth··on Shopify CEO vibe codes an MRI viewer
You can try it yourself - apparently it was just this[0] single prompt:

>> This is a USB Stick of my MRI. Find all reports, find all images, use imagemagick to convert them into something useful, and get everything into a structured directory in the ./output folder that's worth retaining. Then, make an index.html that's a full exploration tool for the results. Use /frontend-skills and /generate-image skills if necessary.

> /frontend-skills you can find in the plugin marketplace, generate-image is just a small skill that allows the model to use nanobanana-pro. It used it for some diagrams.

mbirth··on Why Selling WhatsApp to Facebook Would Be the Biggest Mistake (2012)
There’s DeltaChat which technically is an email client and uses bog standard SMTP/IMAP for the transport of messages. Great idea, as everyone is reachable via their email address. And even if they don’t have the app, they’ll get your chat message as a normal email they can reply to.

But for a while now they’ve decided to create their own server nodes (“chatmail relays”) and heavily promote the use of those instead of your mail provider’s. While those are also just SMTP/IMAP, you still need a different domain and account i.e. different username - which makes them just another chat network which happens to be interoperable with classic emails... for now.

My point is: There seems to be some tendency for things to go proprietary.
