mbi··on Creating Backup Storage Sucks
> The size of Sync is actually fairly small for me, it's just 12GB, but it's not small enough to fit on my 128GB phone.

Synctrain is a great iOS syncthing client that connects to your swarm but doesn't actually sync any files (unless you ask it to). You can still browse the contents of your shared folders and selectively download individual files.

They seem to be about twice as expensive on a few openweight models I've checked.

mbi··on Mathematicians discover shape that can tile a wall and never repeat
"An aperiodic tiling is a non-periodic tiling with the additional property that it does not contain arbitrarily large periodic regions or patches" [1]

So, it has "islands" of repenting combinations of tiles, but these islands do not repeat / translate in a regular way.

FWIW, I installed Ubuntu 19.04 on my X1E-4k using this [0] guide and it has been working flawlessly (with an external display via thunderbolt).

The battery life is much worse than on Windows, can't deny that.

mbi··on Show HN: All Politicians in Switzerland
You haven't included the politicians' parties or political affiliations in the data set, is that on purpose?
mbi··on ThePirateBay.org is making users mine Bitcoins
A friend of mine has written a very popular open-source JavaScript library and has been hosting a copy on his website. Turns out that a few high-volume news sites have started using the library, but instead of downloading a copy and serving it themselves, they've been hotlinking the one on his website.

As a result he is getting several million hits a day on his library's js file, directly from these website's pages.

We've been tempted to include a JavaScript miner in the library he is hosting, but we're unsure of the legal implications, i.e. would the fact that he's hosting the file on his website and that the other websites have simply hotlinked it, be a valid defense?

For Debian that would be debian-security-announce [1], I try to read every post from that list.

mbi··on If You Can Read This, You're SNIing
I didn't really decide to halt development, the project simply lost momentum over time, I didn't consider it dead until a couple years later. During that timeframe I also stopped writing PHP and picked up saner web development habits.
mbi··on If You Can Read This, You're SNIing
Author of Gregarius here, have a hug. But yes: that project is dead.
mbi··on Linode SSD Beta
Hetzner includes 100GB on a SAN in a distinct datacenter with every dedicated plan (500GB is 10€, 10TB 80€.) Of course you could also push to Glacier, but that'll get counted in your outbound bandwidth (2€/TB after 20TB/mo)
mbi··on Linode SSD Beta
Also worth mentioning that for 59€/mo Hetzner is offering a dedicated i7-4770 Haswell with 32GB RAM and dual SSD raid1.

mbi··on Schedule: Python job scheduling for humans.
While the API looks really nice and clean, this seems to lack any sort of task distribution mechanism, i.e. tasks run in-process but cannot be passed off to off-process workers, like in e.g. Celery [1] or RQ [2] (the former also does scheduling, the latter is more of a job queueing library, that can do scheduling via an add-on [3])

mbi··on How zsh is more useful than bash
The killer feature to me is scp completion, e.g.

  scp someuser@someserver:<tab>
… will ssh into the server, fetch the file list and offer it for completion locally (granted you have set up public key authentication)
