mbel··on Redis on the Raspberry Pi: Adventures in unaligned lands
It means new user (hence green color).
mbel··on Show HN: BotEngine – Easy tool for creating chatbots
That UI looks much more usable than the chatbot itself. As a user I would probably prefer to traverse the tree and see multiple options at the same time than to pretend I'm having a chat.

C and Rust? Firefox looks like a ton of C++ to me: https://github.com/mozilla/gecko-dev
mbel··on Show HN: Globe visualizations in Golang
Judging by used color, the picture might be a result of this demo: https://github.com/mmcloughlin/globe/blob/master/examples/ci...

I have no idea what kind of cities might be listed in 'cities.json'.

mbel··on Elvish: friendly and expressive shell for Linux, macOS and BSDs
Yeah, it's missing the traditional loading/empty page state just after opening it.
mbel··on Intro to WebAssembly
What benefits do you expect? Which of them aren't provided today by JVM or .Net?
mbel··on Science-based games – a collaborative list
I am taking part in the discussion indirectly by pointing out that your argumentation is irrelevant and does not support your opinion.

It's not the words that were incorrect. The logic behind them is flawed. The list is supposed to convey games with element of science in them. The entries which are not based on science should be removed from the list. Therefore correct argumentation for removing DQ from the list should explain why the game has nothing to do with actual science.

mbel··on Science-based games – a collaborative list
I never said or implied that I believe it is science based. I highly doubt it is. However I hadn't played it so I'm not going to argue about that.

What I said is that your argumentation is absolutely incorrect and wrong in this context.

> Even the description is elitist and pretentious.

It may or may not be elitist and pretentious (what kind of art isn't?), but that has no influence on whether it is science based or not.

> Everyone has experienced depression.

Well, this is simply not true.

mbel··on Show HN: Crown – A flexible game engine written from scratch in C++
As a bonus you can meditate deeply on all conseqences of using tempates in the vastly increased compilation time that they are going to introduce.

> Again, why not just stick with C?

The thing that is hard to replicate in C is destructors. Automatic deinitialization when leaving scope in very convenient. It allows you to have multiple exists from the scope without preceding each of them with prologue of dinit_*() calls or creating single exit point and jumping to it.

Coupling allocation with initialization is trivial to do without C++ constructors (which I find to be very poorly designed).

A slightly related note: you can get similar behavior in C (and C++) with compiler extensions. In GCC and clang marking function with '__attribute__((warn_unused_result))' will produce a warning if function is called without using the result. Equivalent for MSVC is '_Check_return_'.

Obviously this is not nearly as convenient as your Rust example, but enables some of its the benefits.

> why isn't there a strict "sane C++" or "orthodox C++" subset available as a custom language or compiler option yet?

Probably because sanity is (1) subjective, (2) in this case doesn't really come from disabling features (restricting language). He is still using most of the C++ features (overloads, operator overloading, templates) but only in semantic context that is obvious for them (i.e. templates for collections, overloaded operators for vectors and matrices). Therefore it might be a little bit hard to create a compiler front end that would understand which class acts as a collection or whether given structure is implementation of well known mathematical concept.

Probably because exceptions are the biggest source of pain with RAII.
mbel··on MacOS High Sierra tech preview: A quick look at the stuff you can’t see
> It's happening

Are you aware of any project that is under development right now? I know it's theoretically possible, but I haven't seen any implementation yet.

mbel··on The future of MDN: a focus on web docs
Firefox has the same feature. To use it right click on any search box on any website you visit to assign it a keyword. This works great with vimperator, which has tab-completion for search keywords.

> Compare this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB-ik-Bpl0c to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixAHUWgBKsw&t=0m35s

Both of those clips also show how important background music can be in reception of the scene.

mbel··on WebAssembly 101: A developer’s first steps
Oh, alright. We are speaking about two different things. I was thinking about compilation and specifically supporting complex language features which are mostly handled by a compiler frontend which is this case is clang. And it seems that you are thinking about runtime libraries (or the whole tool chain).
mbel··on WebAssembly 101: A developer’s first steps
> Emscripten is quite mature and compiles even very complex C/C++ code without complaining.

Because it's just Clang with WASM target.

mbel··on Apple adds a tracker blocker to desktop Safari
Isn't it like this that all data is gathered anyway, but site owner can access the more advanced tracers with paid subscriptions?

I don't intent to provoke FUD, I seriously don't know. This would sound like rational choice for Google since they need this data to run their business.

mbel··on Reverse engineering a Nintendo Switch cartridge
I think that they might have picked the size due to ergonomics. It's hard and incovienent to use very small obejcts and Nintendo seems to target players of all ages.
mbel··on Practical Guide to Bare Metal C++
I don't think RAII is a concept complex enough to write a book about it... Probably a blog post or Wikipedia page is enough to explain it fully.
mbel··on Qualcomm, Microsoft Announce Snapdragon 835 PCs with Gigabit LTE
> Yes, but how many people really need better than netbook performance?

With current super bloated state of the web, Electron apps and other disasters? Probably all of them.

mbel··on Tectonic: a modernized, self-contained TeX/LaTeX engine
How is a thin wrapper for a C library a killer app?
mbel··on Kotlin is like TypeScript
"Kotlin is like Java" would be pretty funny.
mbel··on Kotlin is like TypeScript
I guess that the next one will be: "Kotlin is like Rust", or perhaps there should be "Kotlin is like Go" first?
mbel··on Total.js Messenger – A small alternative to Slack
Not relying on package manager does not imply that they rewritten all the functionality provided by relevant packages. They may still use 3rd party libraries but instead of adding dependency to package manager, they may pull their sources in build script or copy the sources into their own source tree.
mbel··on Node.js Compiler – Compiling your Node.js application into a single executable
> But as we go there, maybe some more advanced things like the closure[1] compiler or prepack[2] would make it faster.

And then one could probably go even deeper in search of performance and instead of compiling JS to JS, compile it to C or even straight to native CPU assembly.

mbel··on Node.js Compiler – Compiling your Node.js application into a single executable
Arguably there are already couple of popular compilers [0] for JavaScript (Babel, Closure Compiler, minifiers etc.). They just don't target native CPU assembly.

[0] Compiler is just a program that transforms code from one representation to another.

mbel··on Node.js Compiler – Compiling your Node.js application into a single executable
Perhaps. JIT compiler has to care deeply for compilation time. For AOT compiler compilation time is a little bit less pressing problem which leaves some space for optimization passes that take too long for JIT.
