mbel··on Fairchild, Fairchildren, and the Family Tree of Silicon Valley (2016)
Apparently yes! This seems to be the missing link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_Camera_and_Instrumen...
mbel··on iOS 13 app tracking alert has dramatically cut location data flow to ad industry
Then they will provide something. In the best case regular security updates, I can imagine any reasonable way to force them to add new features during support period.
mbel··on The falling price of a TV set
Well, I'm doing this but my Caps Lock is mapped to Control. Anyway, you are probably right, there are dozens of us. On the other hand I've seen couple of discussions here around Ubiquity and MicroTik in consumer environments some maybe it's not that rare.
mbel··on Bill Lorensen, co-creator of Marching Cubes, has died
> This algo was heavily used in the demoscene and often referred to as 'meta balls'.

No. It is used to implement 'meta balls' effect sometimes. But the two terms are not synonymous. From my experience it's more common to see meta balls implemented with raytracing or some screen-space techniques.

mbel··on Speeding Up the Rust Compiler
I think he is referring to situation when compiler both catches errors at compile-time and is fast. After all the validation part happening in the fronted is rarely the most resource consuming thing that compiler does.
mbel··on Making Games with Kotlin
Well I could say that I haven't seen a PC with Java since forever. But I'm a C developer so perhaps I live in another bubble ;)
mbel··on I documented every surveillance camera on my way to work in New York City
Not quite, but you are close. It wasn't the whole population in 1984 that was monitored. Inner Party members were monitored, but could turn off telescreens. Outer Party members had to have them on all the time. Proles weren't monitored. The idea was to monitor middle class as it was considered to be necessary for lower class to revolt. Upper class had no reason to revolt as they were in power.

I'm leaving this comment mostly for people downvoting OP.

mbel··on The Qt Marketplace
Free extensions seem to be allowed. Check this one for example: https://marketplace.qt.io/products/incredibuild

Obviously it needs Incredibuild server and license, but the plugin is distributed via Qt Marketplace free of charge.

mbel··on Illusory Truth Effect
'Sometimes' seems to be a major understatement.
mbel··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Windows Update makes Windows barely usable. Weekly restarts to update OS at random points in time are unacceptable. There are plenty of other usability issues, for me lack of working Unix-like shell out of the box is one of them.
mbel··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
Not "in Blizzard’s sole discretion".
mbel··on In Defense of Richard Stallman
> If we can't, as a group, tolerate awkwardness, we are very much down the rabbit hole of mandatory social conformity.

Which seem to go against all goals of diversity and inclusiveness. If we strive for more diverse community we have accept quirks of some people. Only in purely homogeneous group everybody can be comfortable and not offended.

mbel··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
The key app that needs the "fastest phone" these days seems to be the web browser.
mbel··on Ultra marathon runner earns awards for both first place woman and overall winner
Same here, especially since they plan to keep the female trophy.
mbel··on Yahoo Mail’s Plan to Fix Email: Make Computers Read It
The web view is the email client they provide. The statistic shows how people access their email account, not where it's hosted.
mbel··on Electron 6.0
More likely this one: https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qtmultimedia-multimedia-video-qmlvide...

Simple QML viedo player.

mbel··on Asm-declaration – Embed assembly language code within a C++ program (2017)
Old, well-known feature of one of the most popular languages. I must be missing something, because I have no idea how this became a hacker "news" :)
mbel··on How to Find Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb
Well, according to Wikipedia it's the same in polish: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostel ;)
mbel··on How to Find Hidden Cameras in Your Airbnb
From my experience in Europe: hostels imply a bunk bed in shared room here too. I just made a quick search on booking.com for a hostel in Warsaw and nearly all of the offers were shared dormitories.
mbel··on The Bitter Truth About Olives (2016)
> What's even more weird is all abrahamic religions mention olive in their books.

Not weird at all. After all they all originate roughly from the same region.

mbel··on How Diablo Was Reverse-Engineered Without Source Code [video]
Yeah. On the other hand probably most of us had a chance to work with code that needed some reverse engineering to be understood ;)
mbel··on Unicode programming, with examples in C
CPP would not be enough, you would need full C99-to-C89 compiler with parsing to AST.
mbel··on Meet Q, a Genderless Voice
Can you elaborate to which recent conspiracy theory are you referring to?
mbel··on I Wanted to Type a Number (2016)
Firefox on Windows does this when control is in focus and the mouse cursor is over the control.
mbel··on Google launches AMP for email
I assume he means turning off AMP-related features in Google products. Like disabling Google search from opening AMP pages instead of actual sites.
mbel··on Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
Well they seem to be slightly better with humans instead of bots, but yeah both stores seem to be awful.
mbel··on Quake II RTX: Re-Engineering a Classic with Ray Tracing Effects on Vulkan
> The difference from RT Quake to Quake it’s only that the lights are not precompiled

In the linked demo video they also use new high resolution textures. Which include not only color data as in the original Quake, but also normal maps and maps with PBR parameters (metalness, roughness).

mbel··on Quake II RTX: Re-Engineering a Classic with Ray Tracing Effects on Vulkan
So does plethora of today's AAA titles for subtle details like particle effects, grass and others.
mbel··on Quake II RTX: Re-Engineering a Classic with Ray Tracing Effects on Vulkan
What do you mean "fake 3d"? They are as 3D as any other computer generated images with linear perspective. Quake is even using a rasterizer like nearly all games today.
mbel··on CowToilet, a Toilet for Cows
I have the exact opposite feeling. Connecting head with toilet feels somehow wrong and I don't really feel comfortable looking at the logo. Also the "recycling-ears" feels like unnecessary addition to main concept of unholy merge of cow with toilet.
