mayutana··on India Launches Beta Version of Its Data Site
"are worthy of tax payer money": As far as I know, most of these ayurvedic/homeopathy institutes (both for education as well as treatment) do not receive public funding.
mayutana··on Are jobs obsolete?
I am talking about the model and not how it was implemented. Hypothetically speaking there is a difference between the three models: a) provide the same to all, b) Let everyone fend for themselves, and c) Provide a basic livelihood to all and allow the ones capable of earning more to do so.
mayutana··on Are jobs obsolete?
USSR was different where everyone was eligible or provided with the same whereas the poster talks about providing some basic livelihood to all and allowing those who can earn more to continue to earn more and live better.
mayutana··on Are jobs obsolete?
True, there are leaches too. But the goal to ensure that everyone has a basic level of living standard is in the direction of what the OP talks about. Note that this is different from the systems implemented in USSR where everyone was provided the same, regardless of their skills or efforts.
mayutana··on Are jobs obsolete?
A similar model is being followed in Europe where the unemployed, disabled, recent mothers and the poorer people are provided some sort of basic support by the state. The higher earning people have extra cash to live more comfortably.
mayutana··on Jason Fried: Why I Run a Flat Company
How does such a model work for tasks where you need to perform long term planning? Similar to national elections, such a model could result in policies being changed every time a new manager is in place.
mayutana··on I stood there, an American citizen, sexually assaulted by a government official
That's exactly the point that irked me. Would she find it ok, if it was done to her in say Europe.
mayutana··on Ask PG: How much did the lunch with you sell for?
$801
mayutana··on Exercise 'can prevent a cold', a study shows
Being healthy requires the combination of a good diet, adequate clothing that suits the weather and exercise.
mayutana··on How to Take Down Facebook -- Hint: It Ain't Twitter.
The reason for Facebook's popularity is its simpleness. Now that it is popular, it can experiment with additional features such as groups and more intimate group settings. Orkut, on the other hand attempted to do it the other way around. I am not sure how does it work now, but 2-3 years back, when one adds a friend, he is expected to rate the closeness in a scale of 1-5. This was to improve friend of friend suggestions as well as who is allowed to see what. The problem with this approach was that it was confusing for the users. This might be a stumbling block for new applications that try to foster a private group structure. But I do agree with Dave that there is a need for such applications.
mayutana··on Why your desk job is slowly killing you
In the context of this study, does riding a bicycle in the normal seated position count as sitting?
mayutana··on Why your desk job is slowly killing you
What about sitting on an exercise ball? Have read quite a few articles in HN about the benefit of doing so.
mayutana··on Offer HN: Room in Vienna, Austria
Currently living in Europe and having visited many of the European cities, I find Vienna to the best among them too. This is a really generous offer and one could save a lot of money.
mayutana··on Please write shorter emails
I usually prefer making it smaller. As much as possible, I try to write the content in the subject, to make it easy for the receiver to decide if it is important enough to reply or not. I do write longer mails when necessary, but I find that the short version suffices in most cases.
mayutana··on The inventor of microfleece refused to patent it.
Can't imagine surving the oncoming winter without my fleece clothings. Thanks for digging it up.
mayutana··on Ask HN: What do you think about a simpler syntax that compiles into LaTeX?
"\usepackage{listings}" should do the trick for you. http://www.usq.edu.au/users/leis/notes/latex/code.html
mayutana··on Swiss complete world's longest tunnel
Amazing feat. But funny to ponder about the fact that it took 14 years of work to save 1.5 hours of travel time. On a serious note, Hats off to such forward-thinking people.
mayutana··on Large study shows females are equal to males in math skills
By the way, I did not disagree with the results of the study. I agreed to it by stating my personal feeling instead of going by the article, since the article didn't mention the study in detail.
mayutana··on Large study shows females are equal to males in math skills
There is a third choice: "I care, but please bring a better case-study". As stated above, the gist of my argument is that all are born equal, it is the society and the stereotypes that shape them.
mayutana··on World's Richest Man: 'Charity Doesn't Solve Anything'
I believe that money spent on education is money well spent. Building schools and etc, not only help to educate the young generation, but also provide jobs. An educated young man will be able to not only help himself, but his family and his surroundings.
mayutana··on Large study shows females are equal to males in math skills
In many cases, the choices are made at a very young age or by other people (relatives) and this leads to stereotypes playing a huge role.
mayutana··on Large study shows females are equal to males in math skills
I personally do not feel that there is a correlation between sex and maths skills. Its the stereotypes that result in girls not actively pursuing maths related courses. If provided the right education and motivation, anyone can be good at any subject. In India, for example, where the students have no choice but to learn predefined syllabus, girls do pretty well in Maths.
mayutana··on Resignation letter from Microsoft Employee
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and the randomness ensured that every paragraph stands out on its own.
mayutana··on Loser-Pays makes lawsuits fairer in Europe. It could work in US, too
I too feel that the Loser-pays scenario is much better. This leads to all parties trying to amicably solving the issue before going to court. Here in Germany, the person suing needs to send a minimum number of warnings before taking the case to court. This provides the defendant with a chance to pay off if he in the wrong, instead of having to go to court and paying the additional lawyer fees for both parties.
mayutana··on Which country has the best brains?
On the contrary, it is quite an intellectual feat to lead a large group of people against a powerful oppressive regime. It gets quite difficult as the organization grows and everyone has their own agenda.
mayutana··on Which country has the best brains?
And Germany that is doing better relatively is way down.
mayutana··on Which country has the best brains?
I agree with you. It is still interesting to see the distribution of the noble winners. It is a good indicator of the countries that fund research and are pioneers in innovation.
mayutana··on Anyone here notice facebook is 'keeping users logged in' by default?
This results in others sites that I browse being able to connect me to Facebook without my permission. Was initially surprised to see my profile photo at random sites that I visit.
