mayanraisins··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
My wife and I recently switched from T-Mobile to Noble Mobile and it was painless with an eSim. I didn’t have to try to track down my sim slot key, I didn’t have to go to the cell store or wait for a sim card in the mail, I just followed their onboarding instructions and made the new eSim my default. It took about 5 minutes.
mayanraisins··on Vitamin D3 breakthrough halves risk of second heart attack
My grandma went to the ER due to feeling nauseous and confused and they concluded it was Vitamin D toxicity from supplementation. She heard online that it’d help her avoid catching the flu.

Just a reminder that you should get a blood test and advice from a medical professional before taking anything above the daily recommended amount.

mayanraisins··on Using the expand and contract pattern for schema changes
I’ve always paired this with the strangler pattern.

“In programming, the strangler fig pattern or strangler pattern is an architectural pattern that involves wrapping old code, with the intent of redirecting it to newer code.”

If you or anyone you know uses Instagram, you can select the logo in the upper-left to change the feed to “following”, which is a chronological list of posts from people you follow. My wife didn’t know about this and I saved her from endlessly scrolling reels.

mayanraisins··on Ask HN: Programmers Who Want to Get Better at Math
I think I’m in your target audience. I’m a developer that studied Computer Information Systems instead of Computer Science to avoid the math classes.

I’ve often wondered if it was the material or how it was delivered that I struggled with. I seem to do better at math when there is a piece grounded in reality, like in physics or geometry. I can use that math to build a deck or calculate how fast an object is moving. Computer programming also falls into this category. I start to struggle when the math isn’t representing anything notable, and instead, just letters and relationships between them floating in space.

As a developer that values good naming and readability, I’m surprised that math uses single character variable names like x, y, h, or k, when it could be named what it is representing. I’m going to assume this is something that carried over from pen and paper, but maybe worth the extra writing when learning.

I have a long list of things I’d like to learn, such as speaking other languages and studying crafts outside of software development, but I do often consider going back to take another shot at math beyond intro Calculus.

Thanks for the resources and the goal of helping people like me. I’ll check them out.

mayanraisins··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
Thanks! uBlock works great when I’m on the PC, but not so great on my iPhone unfortunately. I’ve tried running Pihole and AdGuard servers too, but they don’t do well against YouTube ads. The small additional benefit of having my own UI is that I’m not distracted by channels that I’m not subscribed to, and just presented with a chronological list of videos from the channels I want to follow.
mayanraisins··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I was upset with YouTube ads, so I made my own client. It is a Vue frontend that talks to a Supabase backend. The database has a list of channel IDs, and a serverless endpoint makes a request to the YouTube API to get a list of videos and returns them back to be displayed in a chronologically ordered list as embedded videos as to avoid ads. It could be configured for others to use, but I haven’t created a signup page, and I want to avoid YouTube API rate limiting, so I’m the only user now. It took me a day to make and I’ve used it daily for 3 years.

mayanraisins··on Protocols that have not changed in the last 30 years
It looks like they switched to invite-only this year.

A client of mine would like to start blogging, and I was hoping to recommend the write.as free tier. I'd be interested to hear what other alternatives folks here recommend, or a write.as invite link from a paid user if anyone has one to spare.
