maxwell··on Facing reality about the EU is a core requirement for good management
Yes, but voting is up to the States. They're free to adopt RCV, as we have here in Maine. Or ban it, as in five other States.

But only Congress can repeal the Apportionment Act of 1929.

The 118th Congress is on pace to pass the fewest acts ever. Will they hit double digits?

As a European, you almost certainly have better representation than most Americans. We haven't expanded the House of Representatives since 1929. We're approaching a million constituents per rep, an extreme outlier among OECD countries:

https://www.amacad.org/ourcommonpurpose/enlarging-the-house/...

The reason Americans no longer trust Congress is because the Colonists had better representation per constituent (on paper) in British Parliament. Early U.S. representation was in line with Nordic countries today.

Clearly, though unfortunately, we need more engineers to take pay cuts and become lawyers.

Probably just a coincidence that Kutcher was hospitalized twice for pancreatitis after adopting Jobs' diet in preparation for the role.

Yep. Was expecting at least a high level take on Stable Diffusion, Llama, etc. but then the article ended.

Haha yep, I switched to that.
maxwell··on Amazon Sued over Prime Video Ads: Class-Action Suit Alleges Deception
Seems like whole premise of Prime, and most Apple products for that matter, is to capitalize on the failure to enforce product tying that's illegal under both Sherman and Clayton.

Same, I used to dutifully shift my office hours between EST and EDT accordingly in my email signature.

Cardboard boxes can be acquired without a record of their purchase and are easy to hide among other cardboard boxes, like a book in a library. Also can be used to hide from enemies while moving around under the box.
maxwell··on OnlyFake: A site where ‘neural networks’ churn out fake IDs
Cardboard boxes aren't subject to leaked electronic keypad codes.

maxwell··on Ask HN: I am moving from WA to FL. How do I move my stuff?
I used to work on moving marketplaces. Not aware of an accessible way for U.S. consumers to access rail or sea for HHG shipments. A self-pack container with shipping sounds like your best option. If you're on the fence about keeping your stuff, be aware that for long haul moves, the cost to ship is usually higher than the value of the contents. I'd recommend also getting quotes from ZippyShell and estessuremove.com.
maxwell··on Ask HN: Where do you go for parenting advice?
What kind of advice are you looking for? What age(s)? On what topic(s) would peer-reviewed papers with a decent p-value really matter as a parent?

As a father of three, the only "advice" I would share with new parents is to consider cotton diapers.

maxwell··on Buggy software is dogging the switch to electric cars
Unsustainable. Cars don't hold up for very long. The future is electric hot rods. If cars are computers now then I'll build my own thanks.

Correction: finished lot itself was 18% of total sale, site work under 5%, appliances under 1%.
maxwell··on Wikihouse: Open-Source Houses
Land is only worth what you can build on it. The buildable site was 7% of new single-family costs in 2022 in the U.S., including permits, inspections, design, etc.

Construction costs (labor + materials) were 61%, with interior finishes 24% of construction costs, framing 20%, and major systems 18%.

Appliances were under 2%. Margin was 10%.

Sounds like the rack of newspapers and magazines that have now disappeared from the newsstands, which now sell consumer packaged goods.

Fair point comparing infinite scroll to slot machines. Books end, newspapers and magazines get thrown away. Always more to scroll.

maxwell··on Google Makes over $92B per Year by Owning Android
It's an OS for mobile devices, no mention of "phones" on the project site (https://source.android.com) and lots of Android devices don't have cell service.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to bring your own dialing and voice calling app(s) if you want a UI for punching in formatted E.164 identifiers and making PSTN calls.

maxwell··on Police have undermined the promise of body cameras
Agreed.

Let's go fully remote, sell off most federal property in DC, and retrocede Washington back to Maryland (like Alexandria County back in 1846), dissolving DC and draining the swamp for good.

Then we can take proposals for creating a District of Lincoln or Roosevelt for meetings and events closer to the center of population, e.g. Kansas City (near mean center) or the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio (near median center).

maxwell··on Police have undermined the promise of body cameras
How about we just go back to expanding the House based on population instead of keeping it static at 435 forever? We're approaching a million constituents per representative. Corruption seems a mathematical certainty.
maxwell··on Police have undermined the promise of body cameras
Reps in the U.S. are very much trusted, by their donors. The problem is House elections are too expensive, because representation is so bad, so only those who take considerable corporate bribes have a shot.

While "virtual," American colonists had better representation in the British Parliament on paper than we do today.

We're an extreme outlier among OECD countries:

https://www.amacad.org/ourcommonpurpose/enlarging-the-house/...

We need to repeal the Apportionment Act of 1929 and expand the House to an appropriate size.

maxwell··on Adfree Cities
Yeah I've heard several people report similar "little off but I love it" feelings when visiting here in Maine. The obnoxious billboards always bugged me around Chicago as a kid, but my kids enjoy the novelty when traveling. Similar with TV: we got a digital bunny ear and they were all excited about the commercials, as they've seen so few in their lives (YouTube Premium, streaming, discs/drives, etc.).
maxwell··on Adfree Cities
Content bans are unconstitutional, blanket bans on visual pollution are not, as in Vermont, Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, and Austin.

maxwell··on Apple to move key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam
Because they earn enough per head to hire on-site in expensive locations. "Remote" seems to usually just mean not doing that, i.e. avoiding the costs of North American metro areas, seemingly usually out of financial necessity.
