maxst··on Chromium: Add support for Animated PNG
It's serious business.

maxst··on Chromium: Add support for Animated PNG
> so it'd be best to forget that GIF and APNG ever existed.

There are some good arguments in "Why not simply support WebM in <img>?": https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/faq#why_should_i_us...

maxst··on Chromium: Add support for Animated PNG

maxst··on America Needs a New Moon Mission
The government is leading the way because they have NASA budget to spend on completely unprofitable, but scientifically interesting projects.
maxst··on Why is Firefox still not supporting .webp?
> The lossy variant (which is the only interesting one) does not support full-resolution color. You have to live with chroma subsampling which messes up anything with sharp saturated colors.

I always wondered if 4:4:4 but with more aggressive compression of chroma could beat the good old 4:2:0.

maxst··on Why is Firefox still not supporting .webp?
Still, it's not clear what subset of libwebp features will become popular. For example, I don't see much enthusiasm for animated webp. Even their own blog is full of GIFs: https://blog.google/products/allo/buzzfeed-stickers-google-a...
maxst··on Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species [video]
> Actually impossible, not just expensive like getting someone to Mars in the very near future. The tech didn't exist.

What about the tech to grow food in space? Is it "just expensive" or it doesn't exists? I think it doesn't exist.

I think we need a dedicated food-growing space lab, and run it for least 10 years, until we're confident we have a robust technology that works.

maxst··on The Long, Remarkable History of the GIF
The article is completely wrong about technical aspects of animated GIFs:

> Unlike GIFs, video files don't actually contain every frame of animation you see

> As a GIF, it takes up more than 60 MB because every single frame needs to be stored as a complete image.

This is ridiculous. See http://www.drdobbs.com/optimizing-gif-animations/184412988

maxst··on The Long, Remarkable History of the GIF
The resistance is all but disappeared. No doubt we'll see APNG is Chrome, and WebP in Firefox within a year or so.
maxst··on Lossless compression with Brotli
Somebody, make "image format powered by brotli", please.
maxst··on Jupiter Awaits Arrival of Juno
Cassini also spent several years exploring Saturn system, but discovery of geysers on Enceladus and rivers/lakes on Titan only makes them more interesting.

Gas giants by itself are less interesting. Sure they will photograph those enormous clouds up close and measure their oxygen/hydrogen ratio with more precision, and maybe that's exciting for some scientists.

But you look at Europa and Enceladus and can't help but imagine rovers driving there one day, and can you imagine some craft floating down the river on Titan shooting 360 video?

maxst··on Why BPG will replace GIFs and more
libpng is a reference implementation of the PNG format. They don't have to support every third-party extension.

But libpng provides callback methods for "unknown" chucks, so the application can read and handle them. So it's possible to process APNG with libpng.

maxst··on NASA not ready for dangers of deep space, auditors say
It doesn't have to be completely self-sufficient. They have 15 pressurized modules, I don't understand why 1 of them can't be dedicated to advance this vital technology.
maxst··on NASA not ready for dangers of deep space, auditors say
At the very least, ISS should have a module or two dedicated to growing food. Right now. I don't understand why they're neglecting this technology.
maxst··on The Art of PNG Glitch
Paeth filter helps. This PNG is only 251 bytes:

maxst··on The Art of PNG Glitch
a.k.a. Thousands of Incompatible File Formats.

These days it's basically "what libtiff supports".

maxst··on The technology behind preview photos
42x42 seems odd for JPEG, why not something divisible by 8 or 16?
maxst··on Nobody's Going to Steal Your Idea
> We now employ 10 people and 5 robots.

As a time traveler from 1960, I'm totally not surprised to read that.

maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
Devs who never abandoned their projects are doing fine. Not one of them complained about "hostile takeover".
maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
> Until they take that control from you.

They won't because I'm not abandoning my projects.

People who complain have one thing in common - they abandoned their projects on SF. It's kinda like letting the domain name expired and then complaining that somebody took over. Always keep an eye on your hosting and your domain names, folks.

maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
Let's say it becomes possible. Then what? If your project is popular, it would be on softpedia, filehippo, majorgeeks and many other "free software" aggregators. If your project license allows others to distribute your software, you can't stop them.
maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
I keep complete control over my projects, and I'll make sure it won't happen.
maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
>What I don't understand about any of this is why anyone wouldn't just either move their project to Github or self host.

Personally, I like their download stats:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/apng/files/libpng/stats/tim...

But generally, why would I move if I never had problems with the service?

maxst··on Sourceforge Hijacks the Nmap Sourceforge Account
They had this "You Can Take Over Abandoned Projects" policy for years:

https://sourceforge.net/p/forge/documentation/Abandoned%20Pr...

I took over APNG project in 2011, nice short name, it was really abandoned, and I don't feel bad about it:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/apng/

maxst··on APNG support lands in WebKit
Try this:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/apngasm/

maxst··on APNG support lands in WebKit
APNG support in WebKit is implemented as a thin layer on top on regular vanilla libpng.

So all that stuff is not very relevant.

maxst··on US Threatened Germany Over Snowden, Vice Chancellor Says
Yeah, France shared information about Moussaoui, Russia shared information about Tsarnaev, so it's hard to imagine U.S. withholding similar kind of information in similar situations, so it was probably a bluff.

But still, that's playing hardball.

maxst··on APNG support lands in WebKit
That's what we have in 2015:

maxst··on APNG support lands in WebKit
JPEG usually wins over PNG compression-wise, but in some use cases it makes sense to use PNG.

The same thing with animation/video.
