That's not to say there aren't companies that don't play this kind of game. But on a spectrum of care and don't care, most are in the middle.
However, they are being challenged by groups of smaller startups.
For example, Facebook is losing its appeal due to apps like Snapchat, Houseparty, etc.
Amazon is being nibbled away by direct-to-consumer companies, like Casper and Dollar Shave Club.
Google is getting challenged by voice assistants, chatbots, and so on.
A good way to think of it is not as who can challenge these companies, but which human needs can be served better.
For example, if most data consumption APIs switch to GraphQL, you become "forced" to use the tool.
It has also taken on it's own social meaning. For example, shyness is often associated with introversion and that may not be the right way to look at it.
Everybody enjoyed downloading apps because they got a kick out of them. Now the industry is mostly pumping decaf.

'The initial public release of React in May 2013 used a standard Apache License 2.0. In October 2014, React 0.12.0 replaced this with a 3-clause BSD license and added a separate PATENTS text file that permits usage of any Facebook patents related to the software.'
It's been very good to me, but also trending down as people seem to be diversifying from Meteor. Certainly not what I expected when I got into it.
The story for it is a simple one: I solved some of the annoyances during development for myself with by making a devtool, and then open sourced it.
The reaction was very positive and encouraging. Between the opportunity to make more tools, and the downside of having to maintain them, I decided to create paid tier for the tools.
