maxsavin··on Show HN: Hacker News Detox
For 2019, my focus is on making my life more efficient, and a big part of that involves reforming my computing habits. Among my worse habits is constantly checking Hacker News, since after all, this is the pulse of the industry.

Like most of you, I don't want to miss a single top story, and I don't want to check to Hacker News constantly. My solution was to build a jobs queue and program it to check Hacker News for me. Then, every morning and night, it would email me a list of the top stories.

The emails are designed to feel very familiar to the Hacker News experience. With the added the metadata page descriptions, it feels a lot like a newsfeed. I'm considering replacing these descriptions with ML summaries, and adding adding a preview image to it. What do you think?

Anyways, I've been really enjoying it and I hope you might too. Try it out and let me know what you think!

maxsavin··on Ask HN: Non-SMTP single server internal mail system?
All you would need is user accounts and a database. It should take about a day to build it. I can help you if you need.
maxsavin··on Reasons not to use Netflix
It's perfect for Dwight from the Office.
maxsavin··on Reasons not to use Netflix
Love it: "A friend once asked me to watch a video with her that she was going to display on her computer using Netflix. I declined, saying that Netflix was such a threat to freedom that I felt uncomfortable with legitimizing it in this way."
maxsavin··on John Carmack: My Steve Jobs Stories
I don't think its so much that he's a jerk - it's just that he did not try to hide it. He's a smart guy - he could have covered it all up - and there are plenty of people who do.

Maybe a better word to describe Jobs is honest.

maxsavin··on John Carmack: My Steve Jobs Stories
You have to consider his background when you say this. He is super amazing as is, and 10x more compared to how he started.

> Don't defend him while trying to separate the fact that he was the king of jerks because you have spent big money on his products. Does not work that way. Sorry.

You sound like a jerk.

maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js dead?
Do you mean Meteor Toys? I'm working to get the site back up :) just been busy .. I'm actually contemplating an all-new version.
maxsavin··on ‘Success’ on YouTube Still Means a Life of Poverty
Cost of living is significantly lower in India than in the US. If she is making even $1000/mo there, it’s like 6 figures here.
maxsavin··on JMESPath – A query language for JSON
This looks interesting - but doesn't MongoDB basically achieve the same effect? I kind of prefer MongoDB because you query JSON with JSON - but I'm open to changing my mind :)
maxsavin··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory
The "ADD" that Slack creates might be the killer feature. I suspect that many middle managers may not know how to organize work, and this lets them get away from that.

The name Slack becomes even more ironic in this context.

maxsavin··on Show HN: Observable Notebooks
It's amusing that their markdown example is not reactive.
maxsavin··on [dead]
It may imply what you may have wanted to imply.
maxsavin··on End of the conference era?
> I don’t know how to fix conferences, but the first place I’d start on that whiteboard is by getting rid of all of the talks, then trying to find different ways to bring people together — and far more of them than before.

It’s called Burning Man

maxsavin··on iCloud Drive can strip metadata from documents
I wonder if its a security precaution.
maxsavin··on A wall of lava lamps helps encrypt the internet
But is it really random? #conspiracy
maxsavin··on Ask HN: What's the best way to recover from burnout?
You will need at least a year
maxsavin··on The Pentagon’s U.F.O. Program
They're out there folks
maxsavin··on What Would You Pay to Keep Your Digital Footprint 100% Private?
In the US, we pay our rights: taxes.
maxsavin··on Ask HN: What impact would the repeal of net neutrality have?
This is already happening in the rest of the world. Here's how it works:

In many places, having a data plan is not affordable. It might cost $10 per month, but it's a lot since most people in the developing world make like $200 per month.

So, companies like Facebook, WhatsApp, etc, offer SIM cards that have free data for their services. Customers get a free service, and they get the customer.

The biggest issue I see there is, it helps big companies get bigger, and there's no real way to for small companies to get in on these kinds of deals.

maxsavin··on A year with AirPods, or, how my AirPods fell in the toilet and lived
I had a similar experience with their EarPods. I'm pretty sure it got ear wax and all out too :)

It does feel like AirPods should be officially water proof though. (Especially since the iPhone and Watch models that launched with it were waterproof.)

maxsavin··on New EU law prescribes website blocking in the name of consumer protection
This can be used to shut down services like Bitcoin, can't it?
maxsavin··on New EU law prescribes website blocking in the name of consumer protection
This is horrible
maxsavin··on Budweiser's ex-marketing chief: Weed is the new craft beer
Look for a CBD strain it's what you're looking for :)

Most people don't like it because it doesn't get them "high" but it gets you feeling good.

maxsavin··on IBM Type
I love how they used Helvetica for the content.
maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
I'm not super familiar with DDD but I do like the ideas behind it - in some cases I think I am doing something similar to it.

However - isn't that essentially creating another layer on top of MongoDB? It looks like this could be implemented as a library for Meteor.

I'm only saying that to clarify that I do not think it's Meteor CRUD versus this. I think of Meteor more as a boilerplate than an application framework.

maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
Well - if you mean that MongoDB has a CRUD-like API, and Meteor uses MongoDB, yes, but other than that I do not see the connection. Can you explain?
maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
I think you might need to give Meteor a second look, if only to learn a few things from it. It has nothing to do with (and does much more than) CRUD.
maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
More details please :)
maxsavin··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
Lol - a thread like this seems to pop up every couple of months.

They are updating it like all the time with new features.

The biggest problem with it is that the data layer does not scale well for large apps, and that has tainted the reputation of Meteor as a whole.

However, there are community packages on the way to fix it, and hopefully Meteor will implement MongoDB's new Change Streams feature, which essentially puts the reactivity on to the database.

I'm still holding my bet on Meteor, having recently launched an admin panel tool for it: http://meteorcandy.com

maxsavin··on Rumors That Facebook Is Secretly Recording You Refuse to Die
Lol what did they expect when they launched that microphone-based feature
