maxlamb··on The dating app paradox
Where do you live? Most girls I know where I’ve lived would never approach random guys at a gym…
maxlamb··on The dating app paradox
I’ve dated for years without apps trying to meet people organically, and then also years through dating apps, and I’ve had way more opportunities for human contact with dating apps. I mean the whole point of dating apps is to meet in person once you feel the person might be a good match
maxlamb··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Forget 15-20 years, in rural Guatemala I would see 7 year olds working for a couple bucks a day to bring to their (poor) parents
maxlamb··on A rent-stabilized 1 bedroom apartment for $1,100 In NYC? broker's fee is $15K
Because people can’t or don’t want to pay the huge down payment + broker fees especially if they are not sure how long they will live in the city
maxlamb··on Just 137 crypto miners use 2.3% of total U.S. power
These data centers actually serve apps that 100's of millions of people use every day...
maxlamb··on Write code for the web
Isn't building PWAs building for the web?
maxlamb··on Write code for the web
I think you meant Google's and Apple's incentives to make them (PWAs) worse...
maxlamb··on DeepSeek Coder: Let the Code Write Itself
Is Mixtral better overall or for coding specifically (or both)?
maxlamb··on My AI costs went from $100 to less than $1/day: Fine-tuning Mixtral with GPT4
A direct replacement is still different than a “competing product” which implies is sold to customers. His product (the app) doesn’t compete with OpenAI. I guess a lawyer would need to chime in
maxlamb··on My AI costs went from $100 to less than $1/day: Fine-tuning Mixtral with GPT4
Right but the condition is for "models that compete with our products and service". Can you really argue that this niche app competes with OpenAI's products? Couldn't you make an argument that this only applies to products and services that directly compete with OpenAI, i.e. other LLM API's or a ChatGPT competitor such as a Claude or Bart?
maxlamb··on My AI costs went from $100 to less than $1/day: Fine-tuning Mixtral with GPT4
I'm sorry but could you explain how this is a violation of OpenAI's Terms of Use? Which term does it violate exactly?
maxlamb··on Show HN: Kindllm – LLM chat optimized for Kindle e-readers
What are you using to run the Mixtral inference?
maxlamb··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
Ha! Reminds me of this sketch https://youtu.be/NAkAMDeo_NM?
maxlamb··on How is AI impacting science?
It would not have a huge practical impact in the short term. There are many steps from figuring out protein folding to figuring out new, effective and safe drugs. Here's a good Nature article discussing just that: https://archive.is/4QNKy
maxlamb··on Sam Altman's knack for dodging bullets with a little help from bigshot friends

maxlamb··on Ask HN: What's the coolest non standard application of LLMs you've seen?
How? From meal description?

Part 2 of the fast.ai course might be a good start: https://course.fast.ai/Lessons/part2.html
maxlamb··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
Yes I had some beans stuck in the grinder after trying the technique, I guess you could try to push them in or remove them somehow but it makes the whole process take more time and laborious to make sure you dont end up grinding old rancid beans the next time around
maxlamb··on Google shares sink following reports that some of their AI demo was faked
My guess is: they got a MBA bureaucrat who is mostly adept at increasing his own power as a leader, instead of a technologist who truly values innovation and building quality products.
maxlamb··on Life Changing Books on Sex and Relationships
“A General Theory of Love” by T. Lewis et al.
maxlamb··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
By her own admission she is supporting herself financially from “having bought crypto at the right time.” I’m guessing the vast majority of whistleblowers have that kind of financial cushion to risk it all like this. Source: https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/10/25/facebook-whistl...
maxlamb··on What Is Retrieval-Augmented Generation a.k.a. RAG?
Do you know why it’s blocked? Seems weird to me
maxlamb··on A secret deal let Spotify bypass Android's app store fees
Wouldn’t it be 30% for Spotify? 15% is only for businesses where iOS revenue is less than $1m.
maxlamb··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
He said he wished she communicated her concerns to him beforehand. How can disagreements be delt with if never communicated directly? So the CEO has to first learn of a disagreement with a fellow board member through a NY Times article?
maxlamb··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
90% of employees are threatening to quit. My guess is Ilya considers this outcome a huge failure.
maxlamb··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
My understanding now is that Mira was not on the board so she did not vote.
maxlamb··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
Sam
maxlamb··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
Only rich in stocks. Salaries are high for sure but probably not enough to be rich by Bay Area standards
maxlamb··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
The only way this story gets more suspenseful:

1) Large military convoys are seen moving towards data centers used by OpenAI. 2) Rumors start going around that GPT-5 demonstrated very unusual behavior towards end of testing last week. 3) "Unknown entity" has somehow gained control of key US infrastructure. 4) Emergency server shut down procedures at key Microsoft Azure data centers rumored to run GPT-5 inference have been kicked off but all data centers personnel have been evacuated because of "unknown reasons."

maxlamb··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
But wouldn’t the coup have required 4 votes out of 6 which means she voted yes? If not then the coup was executed by just 3 board members? I’m confused.
