maximus-decimus··on Life expectancy rise in rich countries slows down: took 30 years to prove
I remember a paper that said optimal weight to reduce mortality is just below overweight. slightly overweight people were living as long as "normal" weight people and being very low "healthy" weight really wasn't that great.

I don't know what they based "normal" bmi weight on, but it's not by setting the middle of the range to max longevity.

maximus-decimus··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
I mean, car companies also just straight out cancelled their chip orders because they initially thought people would stop buying cars during COVID.
maximus-decimus··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 also rumored with 24GB memory
Tell me you don't live in a cold climate without telling me you don't live in a cold climate.

In a cold winter, you put the heat source inside the house, not outside :p And if that's too warm, you just open the window. Even if those gpus took the full 1800 watts from the power outlet, that's still not enough to overcome a cold breeze from an open window when it's -30C or even just -20C outside.

maximus-decimus··on Smart TVs take snapshots of what you watch multiple times per second
You would really think spying inside somebody's home would already be illegal.
maximus-decimus··on Smart TVs take snapshots of what you watch multiple times per second
How do you know the smart box is not doing the same thing?
maximus-decimus··on They stole my voice with AI
The first one sounds more like Scarlet Johanson to me. It's not just about the voice itself, it's about the sensuality and gravitas of the voice. The first one has Scralet's warmth and feminity whereas the second one sounds a robot impersonator trying mimicking scarlet's voice without understanding emotions.

So to me you really proved that the voice actress sounds more like Scarlet than a literal AI replication of Scarlet. If that's now damning, I don't know what is.

maximus-decimus··on We could be witnessing the death of the graphics card in real time
I really liked when when previous motherboard was randomly sending screeching sounds to my ears. I ended up buying a ~100 CAD fiio E10K which I'm still using 6 years later.

So really I still have a "sound card", it just became a USB dongle.

maximus-decimus··on Americans Are Falling Behind on Their Bills
I guess that's one way to have the poor make less than minimum wage.
maximus-decimus··on iPhone 16 demand is so weak that employees can already buy it on discount
Of course they're capable of doing it. Scarlet Johanson is also capable of dating me. They just don't want to.
maximus-decimus··on iPhone 16 demand is so weak that employees can already buy it on discount
I bought a note 8 6 years ago and honestly, I don't see why I would ever need anything better than that. We've reached peak phone a long time ago.

To me, how work stress can kill you is the most interesting part.
maximus-decimus··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
IMO, spending 24 hours in ketchup doesn't sound any "lower" than jackass sitting in a circle and throwing stuff at each others' balls. So I would say that raced ended 20 years ago.
maximus-decimus··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
They just think actively looking for one night stands is creepy, so the answer is nowhere.
maximus-decimus··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
Not really, it's like playing Counter Strike with your friend, but you're a total noob and they're world champion. You try your best and yet, for you to have any semblance of fun, the other person had to play only with a knife, one hand behind their back and picking their nose with the other. It's just never gonna be as fun as if everybody is trying their best and are all on the same playing field.
maximus-decimus··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
the DPT-S1 is 13.3-inch. It's close enough I haven't even noticed it's not the size of A4. It's huge.
maximus-decimus··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
I regret buying mine. I like my Sony dpts1 much better which was 13 inches (a great size for reading book pdfs) while managing to be lighter somehow. I also used that to take university notes and do university cs homework.

I just can't recommend an e-book reader that's smaller than a piece of A1 paper if its purpose is to replace A1 sized paper (either books or notebooks)

maximus-decimus··on Owners of 1-Time Passcode Theft Service Plead Guilty
I think they meant more hobby leagues where people just play to hang out with friends and drink beer.
maximus-decimus··on Athletes and musicians pursue virtuosity in fundamental skills
Do musicians do any practice in their free time on top of 8 hours of daily work?

Their job is to practice, they don't need to use their free time for that.

maximus-decimus··on Athletes and musicians pursue virtuosity in fundamental skills
saying training is work is also confusing, because just doing your work is not training either. I'm kinda angry at the school system for never teaching me about dedicated practice. For the longest time, I did believe practicing something was just doing it over and over.
maximus-decimus··on Athletes and musicians pursue virtuosity in fundamental skills
You didn't even include "solve the customer's problem" or "has features people care about" or portability. Electron apps are not taking over the world because "execution performance time" is the one true metric by which all code should be judged.
maximus-decimus··on A 30-hour workweek in America? It nearly became law
well 37.5 hours to 30 hours is 5 days a week to 4 days a week. You work 20% less but get 50% more off days, sounds like a great deal.

4 to 3 days, your productivity would go down 25%, and your vacation up 33% (3 to 4 days), so it's still interesting I guess but seems more balanced.

3 to 2 days, your productivity would go down 33%, but you only get 25% more off days (4 to 5 days).

My incredibly scientific analysis says that it would make sense down to 3 days a week, or 22.5 hours, but not so much after that.

maximus-decimus··on Slow is smooth, smooth is fast: Navy SEALs' efficiency secret
It was Judo and I was a scrawny teenager, but a black belt used to hold me to the floor by doing head stands on me so... you hear those stories a lot because they're true.

Hell, it's even in Asterix and Obelix https://www.facebook.com/judoclubsaintaubindaubigne/videos/a...

I have pretty average man hands (although my fingers might be a bit long) and I use a Note 8 one handed without really any problem. Honestly, I like it even if just for the fact I tended to drop smaller phones a lot more.

Based on that, I would expect half the men to be able to use even the biggest non-fold phones one handed without any problem.

I discovered about the Unihertz Jelly Star the other day which is allegedly the smallest android phone with a 3 inch display. People over /r/dumbphone seem to like it as a mean to make doom scrolling less appealing to them while the phone can still be used to do all you need like use Uber (although android auto on this must be horrible).

At 309 CAD on Amazon, I'm tempted to give it a try.

I've been wondering if Reddit has always been this cesspool or if I just got older. When I'm logged in it's not too bad because I curated the subreddits, but the default subs it shows me when I'm logged out feel like half the content is angry people complaining about politics and immigrants.
maximus-decimus··on Go 1.23 Released
Maybe if all you want to do is read code, but if you want to write it you need to know stuff like the fact there's no inheritance or generics, that public methods are define with capital letters and to parse json you need to use magic annotations.
