When risk is involved, there's also often some hubris in the assessment. These crypto orgs obviously never intended to go broke. They probably honestly thought they'd likely have so much money that they'd cover their customer commitments without any issue. And if they did, they frankly probably wouldn't have ended up exposed and in legal trouble.
Which comes back to the first point: people cynically thinking all the orgs who made it big also did all this shady stuff but got away with it.
I'll also note that, with regards to using an HP42S today, most of their LCD screens have not aged super well and have faded a lot. Other models like the HP15 and HP32S(ii) have LCD screens that seem to age a bit better for whatever reason (potentially the support for the menu and limited graphing behavior of the 42S required some slightly different LCD parts). I have all these models, but wouldn't recommend an original 42S to anyone but a collector due to screen visibility issues - my HP15C and HP32S are plenty usable still though.
I also highly recommend the Swiss Micro replicas if you like RPN calcs. Very solid attempts at reproducing and modernizing some timeless calculators.
Dragon Age: Inquisition demographics (https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/NickYee/20170120/289534/Beyo...) also boasts 48% female which is very high compared to genre averages.
There is likely a lot of untapped market in the RPG and simulation genres if games want to cater more to women. Probably less so in stuff like FPS.
