maxcan··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
100%. I should have made that clear in my somewhat sarcastic quip.

For years I was telling anyone who'd listen that COO Cook was more important to AAPL than Jonny Ive.

maxcan··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Who forgot to tell $AAPL that there is a supply chain crisis?
maxcan··on First flight of the Airbus A321XLR with up to 4700 NM range
I'd take 8 hours in a A321 with Jet Blue's layout (in mint or economy) than any wide body from AA or United.
maxcan··on Boeing clashes with key supplier ahead of Starliner spacecraft launch
Man the time is ripe for Textron or Bombarbier to put together a 737/a320 competitor. Boeing is so hobbled right now.
maxcan··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
100%, but you're right that nobody wants to talk about it. I guess I've just adapted by growing thick skin around the issue and just not letting it bother me.

That thick skin is, IMHO, a trait that I think has become vastly underappreciated in our society.

maxcan··on Why the Gov.uk Design System team changed the input type for numbers (2020)
Just be grateful you can paste it. chase.com blocks copy/paste on IBAN fields which is just incomprehensible to me. Absolutely infuriating.
maxcan··on Why America can’t build quickly anymore
Yes, and its called Singapore and Japan.
maxcan··on Move and resize windows in macOS using keyboard shortcuts or snap areas
thanks!

Has anyone used both Magnet and Rectangle? Been on Magnet for ages, wondering if there's any compelling reason to switch.
maxcan··on Israel passes law denying naturalization to Palestinian spouses
Pretty tough to read the Israeli constitution when no such document exists.

Perhaps you mean the Declaration of Independence?

maxcan··on Push-ups with Python, mediapipe and OpenCV
Thank you. Totally agree and 100% support scaling, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. The most basic scale would be to go from your knees instead of toes *while maintaining a rigid core* but there's a huge variety of other options too.
maxcan··on Push-ups with Python, mediapipe and OpenCV
ok, nice work as far as a quick little coding project goes, but none of those pushups were legal reps. you need your chest to touch the ground and when you go up your whole body besides your arms needs to rigid.

maxcan··on Some Gotchas (and Solutions) Migrating from Ngrok to Cloudflare Tunnels
not sure how I'd go about getting a certificate for a .ngrok.com domain though.
maxcan··on JetBlue A320 tail strike on takeoff, B350 in opposite direction
Actually aircraft do use the term “cleared for takeoff” when reading back their takeoff clearance to ATC.

Little bit of trivia, but on Sully’s famous flight he didn’t quite read back his takeoff correctly. You need to state your identifier AND runway and, IIRC, he only read back “cactus 1549 cleared for takeoff”, omitting the runway. Totally unrelated to the flight, just a little detail which the movie got right (I checked the liveATC audio).

maxcan··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
more twitter commenters, but IIRC some well known ones. TBH, I don't really want to spend the time to go digging through a bunch of twitter searches to find them.
maxcan··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
DAE remember people dismissing the original critical media coverage as being sexist and just trying to take down a successful woman in tech? Wonder if we'll hear any apologies to those authors..
maxcan··on What really happened at the Millennium Tower?
Actually, that neighborhood of SF is one of the very very few parts of the Bay Area that are not NIMBY central.
maxcan··on Tesla pulls its new Full Self-Driving beta due to software 'issues'
Exactly. Also, most of the beta testers said that they were very satisfied with the speed of Tesla’s response.

This is the system working how its supposed to.

maxcan··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
One highlight for me - Hari Seldon being played by the same actor as Valery Legasov.
maxcan··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
You know that the world has progressed since the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, right?

I know that its hard to to believe that there has been progress in the last 100 years, as we sit here communicating effortlessly across the globe, protected from huge numbers of diseases that ravaged humankind, enjoying workplace fatality rates decreased by multiple orders of magnitude, enjoying universal suffrage, etc etc.

maxcan··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Its exceedingly likely that that number does not include fire escapes and emergency exits.
maxcan··on DIY Acoustic Camera
Exactly.. the laser introduces all kinds of safety issues. Simply shining a light and pointing me in the right direction vastly increases my lethality, especially combined with one of those fly swatter electric rackets.

My cat would serve a similar role for larger insects. Her eyes would track them for me so I could locate and destroy them. Unfortunately she either cannot, or more likely chooses not to, track mosquitos.

maxcan··on DIY Acoustic Camera
Is it possible to tune this to specific frequencies to detect mosquitos? Their audio signal is pretty weak but its also a very specific frequency. This would definitely help in the hunting and killing of the little bastards.
maxcan··on Plans to shift aviation from magnetic navigation to true navigation
one of my favorite apocryphal exchanges:

airplane inbound to land: "KXYZ tower, N12345 at 3000' tower: "N12345, KXYZ tower, confirm you have Romeo" airplane: "KXYZ tower, N12345 has Romeo" tower: "N12345, fine, but bravo is current, recommend you recheck atis"

maxcan··on Plans to shift aviation from magnetic navigation to true navigation
Its kind of funny. In our initial training the FAA requires that instructors really drill it into our heads when we using magnetic vs true numbers then as soon as you pass your first check ride you basically never think about it again.

I've been flying since 2013 with almost 500 hours at this point. I could make some educated guesses about where we use true vs magnetic, but aside from runway designations couldn't tell you much for certain.

Its never come up in my flying.

maxcan··on Jetson One – Personal Electric Aerial Vehicle
Not to mention that having the center of lift above the center of gravity gives you some dynamic stability for free. This approach is the opposite.
maxcan··on Michelin's airless tires are scheduled for market launch in 2024
I suspect the production version will have a covering on the sidewall for that and to reduce aerodynamic drag. It won’t be structural like current tires but I think the “wall-free” design you see now is Just prototype marketing.
maxcan··on [dead]
good. if only she could take Adam Neumann with her.
maxcan··on Why airlines no longer use rear-engine planes
This is a big part of the answer. Usually when you're adding power, its because you want to go up so the last thing you want to happen is for the nose to go down. The higher up the engines are relative to the center of mass the more of a downward pitching moment you'll get.

Also, I believe (and I'm very much not sure about this) but the above wing mounts like the Honda Jet can have nasty implications for flutter or some other structural issues if you aren't really careful. Its like the dynamic instability of trying to hold a stick at the bottom vs the top.
