maury91··on AEG combi microwave unusable after update: device thinks it is a steam oven
I was about to say a similar joke: "Good thing the microwave doesn't think it's a teapot"
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
The good thing is that I don't work in London from many years, now I'm working in Lithuania, air quality is way better than in London. From when covid hit being in the office has become the exception more than the norm ( we need to compile a form to being able to go the office ) so on the working remotely not much did change
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
Same reason why everyone leaves ( and at some point comes back ), career.

I did leave the first time ( for London ) for work, came back 3 years later but had to leave again because my wife had trouble find a job in Sardinia ( she doesn't speak Italian ), maybe we will go back to Sardinia in the future when both our careers will be fully remote

maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
It will be enough just to differentiate between Italy and Sardinia, they are very different
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
Being murdered in my province requires some effort, last homicide in my city was ~40 years ago. That murder was so unexpected that it had repercussions that are still in place today
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
I'm not from US, the article says "US life expectancy has not kept pace with that of other wealthy countries and is now decreasing."
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
My hometown I believe ticks all 4 of the things you mentioned. So I agree with you that genetics is a minor part of the equation

This is a personal anecdote of mine:

I lived in 3 nations: Sardinia ( hometown ), London and Vilnius. I do a lot of running and I love collecting data, something I noticed is that every time I go back to my hometown my VO2 max starts skyrocketing, after training as little as 3 weeks in my hometown it goes up by more than 10 points, when I go back it starts declining slowly until it goes back to slightly above the value when I left.

I do believe there must be something special about the environment, I do continue working from home when I'm in my hometown to stay longer, so it is not an holiday effect, my diet actually goes worst when I go back home because I go a lot to restaurants that I missed. And even with worst diet my fitness improves fast ( I run faster with same HR ( even for a while when I'm back ), VO2 and race predictor improves drastically), my stress goes down and my sleep score almost maxes out ( 98/100 )

maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
I believe my diet is not too different from the one of my grandparents, at least compared to their diet in the last 20 years ( I can't remember before I was 10, and I don't know what they eat before I was born ). The "modern diet" hasn't really catchup here yet
maury91··on What's my place in the world population?
Maybe it will be good to have also regions other than countries, the website claims I will die at 89 years old and that data seems wrong for 3 reasons:

1. 3 out of 4 of my grandparents are still alive and are all over 90 years old

2. Living over 90y is quite common in my area, my neighbour is something like 105y and she still goes to cut wood on her own

3. Life expectancy tends to go up so I'm expected to live longer than my parents and grandparents

maury91··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
It is available, it is just not common, I'm from Sardinia, in my province ( Oristano: an area of 3000 square km) there's only 1 McDonald's, and only teens go there. If you don't live in the main city, a trip to McDonald's can take easily 1 hour or more.

We dove a lot of pizza places, but it is Italian pizza and it is not as caloric as the American version, ours is made with 200grams of dough and has less stuffing as possible, one pizza should be around 800kcal and majority of people I know usually eats 3/4 of it and leaves the remaining 1/4 for the day after

maury91··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
I kind of forgot that, it is a decade that I don't enter a McDonalds, this could be one of the hacks: don't go to any fast food place
maury91··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Intermitted fasting works on the principle that if you eat 1800kcal in one sitting you are going to puke. I can easily eat even 3000-4000kcal in 1 day, but in one meal going over 1500kcal is very hard.

Edit: Yes I'm wrong I should have said "if you eat 1800kcal of clean food", I forgot the existence of fast food because it is not something common in my country

maury91··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
I will say what worked for me ( lost 30 Kgs ( 66 Lbs ) in ~6 months ) sorted by what I think it is easier and more effective:

1. Eat slowly, as slowly as you can, the feeling of being full takes a while to reach your brain ( I know this is not the scientific correct definition but gives the idea ), the slower you eat the less you eat.

2. Drink a lot, something I noticed is that sometimes I want to eat something but the reality is that I want to drink and I'm just eating to get the liquids out of the food, when you want to eat first drink a glass of water and wait 1 minute to see if you still want to eat.

3. Brush your teeth 5 minutes after you eat anything, I myself find washing my teeth a chore and I want to do as less as possible, brushing my teeth after lunch stops me from eating snacks after lunch because I don't want to dirty my teeth and wash them again.

4. Have a food journal, use an app to log everything you eat, before you eat it. It is important that is before because in this way you know how many calories you are going to eat, and sometimes that number is higher than what you expected, at least on me this usually has the effect that I choose to eat less of what I was going to eat or I will eat something else entirely.

5. Eat breakfast as late as you can, and dinner as early as you can. This is called intermittent fasting and works, but it requires quite a willpower.

6. This one is the one I find the hardest but also the most effective: Limit the amount of sweets you eat, I know it is hard as hell and when you see a sweet you already start salivating ( or at least I do ), but say to yourself: "today I will eat maximum 250kcal of sweets ( that is usually 1 croissant max )" or if you are more advanced you can swap today for "this week"

7. This one doesn't really apply to me because in my country we have the culture of cooking, but from what I heard around it helps in countries where cooking at home is uncommon: Cook your food from scratch, don't buy a ready meal, cook it yourself, in this way you have full control of what goes in that meal and you know what goes in it, it will save you from eating unnecessary sugars and conservants.

maury91··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
I live in Lithuania and I'm glad we are part of Nato or now we will be the ones invaded by Russia
maury91··on Belarus referendum approves proposal to renounce non-nuclear status
For me is the opposite, time to head south and leave Vilnius, got Minsk at only 100mi from here
maury91··on Russia gives Ukraine deadline for decision on talks in Belarus
I believe it could be also an excuse to justify ( internally ) why the war is going so slow. "It is not that Ukrainians don't want to be saved and are fighting hard, it is because we want to give them opportunities for diplomacy and we stopped the hostility for a day"
maury91··on Russia gives Ukraine deadline for decision on talks in Belarus
> If the talks are rejected, the Ukrainian side shall bear all responsibility for bloodshed

On my personal opinion this is another case of Russia making unacceptable requests ( bring our #1 target in a nation hostile to you ) and blame the other party when this doesn't happen

maury91··on Ukraine calls on hacker underground to defend against Russia
Currently Russia is suppressing all the civil protests against war in their own country, and they go as far to make people go to jail for just tweeting about it.

If it will be possible to use hacking or similar techniques to generate noise so:

1. Who wants to protest is harder to detect online ( i.e. can be arrested only once in square actually protesting )

2. The information about Russians protesting against war spreads to how many Russians as possible, so every person that wants to join will know and will can

I believe protests in Russia can help resolving this situation.

Unfortunately I don't have any knowledge on how to help with this possible plan, but in this thread there're people with that knowledge

maury91··on Show HN: Meetup with other travelers in a new place
I agree on using the website to pickup girls is wrong ( and probably not effective ), but not being a traveler doesn't sounds bad, when I travel somewhere having a local show me the place would be nice, maybe just having a different profile for "locals" would help.
maury91··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
To the parent comment stating "Italians will benefit from more tax money" ( the parent comment has been edited and the phrase rewritten to state that the country will benefit )
maury91··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
I didn't said anywhere that companies shouldn't pay taxes... If was for me companies should pay the same amount of taxes as civilians ( 60% ) if not more
maury91··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
I'm not saying that Amazon shouldn't pay because they will use the money better. Mine was a response to the parent comment saying that the Italians will benefit from "tax money".

I do believe that is good to tax/fine Amazon appropriately, I just don't believe that the Italian government will use that money for the benefits of the Italians.

maury91··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
I don't want to go down the rabbit hole that is politics, but Italian usually don't benefit from "more tax money', the government is not very good at handling money
maury91··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
one minor error from the automatic translation, the correct sentence is:

> Among these exclusive benefits stands out the Prime label, ...

In the Italian version is made clear that the Prime label is one of the most important benefits

maury91··on Collision Detection Is Hard: The Story of Alf
From my understanding the position of the objects are different between NTSC and PAL. So if you set it to display NTSC you see the enemies in the wrong positions and the collisions are calculated on PAL.

Note: I'm not 100% sure I understood the article correctly

I found the article quite confusing I have 3 possible understandings:

1. The one stated above

2. Collision is extremely fast and not displayed on screen ( if was displayed in screen it will be easy to spot by going frame by frame )

3. Something else collided with something else. In the article it talks about the fish with the health bar

maury91··on What Does My Site Cost?
Also in Italy the price is wrong, Iliad offers 120GB for 9.99€ + SIM ( 9.99€ ), considering the worst case scenario ( using the offer for 1 month only ). It become 19.98€ for 120GB: 19.98 / (120 * 1024) * 1.39 = 0,00022€, almost 2 orders of magnitude less than 0.01$ ( 0.008€ ) ( pre-paid price shown in the website ). Price can go further down if you keep the SIM for 1 year or more: ( 9.99 * 13 ) / ( 120 * 12 * 1024 ) * 1.39 = 0,00012€

The only thing required to buy a SIM is a passport so every foreigner can buy one.

maury91··on Language learning with Netflix
I'm working on a side project that does exactly that: translate everything except some words.

When I will have something ready I will add a comment in this thread

maury91··on Poor in Tech
> Didn't anyone bother to set up the MacBook activation locks?

The macbooks were handled by the IT department, everyone was just using them, so I don't know if such a function was enabled, the only security measures I know there were are remote login and disk encryption.

I don't know what the person that stole the macbooks did with them, but because he/she stole more than one I believe he/she was able to make a profit

maury91··on Poor in Tech
I believe it depends on the value of the object and the chances of getting caught. If you steal a macbook in an office full of cameras is a bad deal. If you steal a macbook every other day in an office without any camera is a good deal.

And the second option is exactly what happened in an office I worked on, at some point enough people complained that their macbook was stolen and they installed cameras.

Funny thing in the same office my lunch was stolen once a week and that just became a joke during stand-ups "did they stole your lunch today?"

maury91··on Poor in Tech
Thanks, I got the wrong reasoning, it's not that she might steal, it's that people that has never been poor don't think stealing is an option.
