That's a bit like' saying only bad people benefit from lawyers in court. The point is you have to defend every one equally even if they are as guilty as sin.

And of course employers are saying they cant afford it that is the "line" they have to run in public.

mauricemir··on People Are Worried About Bond Market Liquidity

mauricemir··on Head of T.S.A. Out After Tests Reveal Flaws
Nor does it have the same risk profile as say Ireland or Iceland. Whether its over blown is a different debate and a much harder one to quantify.
mauricemir··on Head of T.S.A. Out After Tests Reveal Flaws
Not all countries have the same risk profile
mauricemir··on The programming talent myth
How is it handled differently in tech vs say big FTSE 100 companies.
mauricemir··on The programming talent myth
IB, Management Consultancy and Law certainly have that aspect - even if you are realy paying $2000 a day for a wet behind the ears MBA with no experience.

If your a rich person with legal trouble you want a rockstar lawyer like Cherie Blair as your Barrister. Just Like the NI journalists who got off from bribing cops - they had the most expensive lawyers money can buy

mauricemir··on The programming talent myth
Was this for entry level first jobers? I remember some one else (in the uk) saying that doing a basic join of two tables was not a given even for experienced developers.
mauricemir··on The programming talent myth
And back in the day in the UK our CSE class at 13/14 had no difficulty learning programming and that was an assembly language with only Add sub and some jump instructions

For context the UK used to have CSE and O Level Exams at 16 the CSE ones where for the vocational track kids who would leave school at 16.

mauricemir··on China’s stock market bubble: A goring concern
Yes there are complex share cases that disbar investors based on nationality.
mauricemir··on Quick fix for an early Internet problem lives on a quarter-century later
And misses the point (not to be a circuit switched bigot) that there where existing networks based on OSI that where technically superior.

But they cost a lot more and required more technical rigor to implement (yes I am looking at you Sprint/ Microsoft) and some times Good enough for jazz is the way to go.

mauricemir··on You Draw It: How Family Income Affects College Chances
Depends on how much disposable money you have not the absolute value plus cultural issues are in play eg putting savings into gold as you don't trust the banks
mauricemir··on Worker-owned tech cooperatives find a niche near Silicon Valley
Yep Capital is the killer for worker coops - there have been experiments with coops taking VC funding Poptel in the UK is one example.

Unfortunately it did not end well :-(

mauricemir··on Worker-owned tech cooperatives find a niche near Silicon Valley
Not in the USA its mostly Farmers and American coops don't have the left wing roots that they do in Europe and to a lesser extent in the UK
mauricemir··on Worker-owned tech cooperatives find a niche near Silicon Valley
coops normally have special status to get round some of these issues.

And coop members can have direct or indirect ownership a full on worker coop normally has direct ownership and organizations like John Lewis have indirect ie shares held in trust.

mauricemir··on Worker-owned tech cooperatives find a niche near Silicon Valley
It depends is some coops members do have to ante up the Spanish Mondragon coop is an example.

And by definition the members of the coop must own the coop or own a controlling interest

mauricemir··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
Nah that was the Management school :-)
mauricemir··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
Its best practice in the UK I am surprised that the EU hasn't clamped down on this in the rest of europe.
mauricemir··on Jawbone Accuses Fitbit of Stealing Information by Hiring Workers Away
Which counties would this be Qatar?

BTW Freedom to work for whoever you chose is on one the rights laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human rights.

and I think its implied in the US constitution

mauricemir··on Jawbone Accuses Fitbit of Stealing Information by Hiring Workers Away
Puts the FIFA scandal in perspective eh
mauricemir··on Jawbone Accuses Fitbit of Stealing Information by Hiring Workers Away
Not heard of that in europe an employee might get thrown under the bus and sacked for gross misconduct if it came out.

But its very common for sales types to take their contact list with them and I know one large UK employment Site had some one leave who took the entire candidate list with them.

mauricemir··on Accounting for Developers
Hard to become an estate agent what professional skills do you need to show some one round a house.
mauricemir··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
Ironic as my first job was on campus at CIT Cranfield University which only did MSC and PHD courses and would consider those 3 as feeder schools

They used to say Cranfield considered Harvard, MIT , Ox-bridge as as paces where it was permissible to do ones "First Degree" as long as you did the right course and the right supervisors and got a First.

mauricemir··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
Actually good employers often throw out applications with pictures - to avoid any race/sex discrimination issues.
mauricemir··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
Yes, in a way beyond a certain basic competence the coding is the easy bit.

And if its all about the meritocracy why have "grad" in the name or do those of us who didn't goto uni count
