mattwdelong··on Picking berries is my meditation
About a year and a half ago, I cleared and rough graded my land for our house build. I rented a kx40-4 for about two weeks and put about 140 hours on it. That was pure meditation. The hydraulics became an extension of my body, with the immediate gratification of instantaneous change, I was able to shape the land as I see fit. My wife asked me what I was thinking about and my response was “dirt dirt dirt..rock..dirt” and that was wonderful. I have not had that feeling since I was completely disconnected for a week on an island in Belize. Very calming until the tap root of a big oak tree wrapped around the bedrock 6’ underground. Then you’re reminded that every task has its challenges. I’m now on the look out for a good deal on an excavator.

Otherwise, I enjoy flower farming and grow about 1/2 acre of flowers and sell wholesale. Close second. Sometimes it is stressful in the midst of July/August weeds but then once you come out the other side, it’s all worth it.

mattwdelong··on Tick-killing pill shows promising results in human trial
Nothing of note. I still see plenty of turkeys, frogs and possums. I spray the beneficials so that it does not harm other beneficial insects and I assume if there is a healthy population of insects in general, there is still enough food source for wildlife. I can’t think of anything that prefers ticks as their main diet.
mattwdelong··on Tick-killing pill shows promising results in human trial
I bought property in 2021 with significant tick pressure. I’ve pulled dozens of ticks off me in the first couple years. The past two years I’ve been spraying Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and have seen significant improvement in that time. I have a tractor with a boom sprayer, which helps with large coverage. Obviously this is not a variable you can control in the wild, but for me, it has been super helpful on private land.
mattwdelong··on A Bluetooth Low Energy soil moisture sensor
Chiming in to day I would also participate in this order. I have a farm and would love to automate aspects of my irrigation and have been looking for something like this. This in combination with soil temperature would be very beneficial.
mattwdelong··on A cocktail of pesticides, parasites and hunger leaves bees down and out
Have you thought about meadow mixes with native beneficial flowering plants [1]? There is some planning and expense to get it established, but once established your only maintenance is cutting it down once a year. In the long run it'll save you significant time.

mattwdelong··on Nexus 4 battery bloating
Interestingly enough, my beloved Nexus 4 just died this past month. I noticed it getting extremely hot, and then one day started a boot loop that I could not fix. I figured some hardware broke. My uncle also picked up one around the same time, and is going through similar problems - overheating and rebooting, though has no boot loop issues. I will warn him of this battery issue.

On another note, I just purchased a Zenfone 2. I accidentally dropped it from about a foot (getting out of the car) and cracked the screen. I noticed most other Zenfone 2 phone that has a cracked screen appears to have it crack in a very similar spot (top right). I guess all phones have their weaknesses. Though, my nexus 4 looked like it went to war and back having been dropped (at excessive heights), and never broke.

Thanks for the heads up, I did not notice that.
mattwdelong··on Name.com Tells Customers To Change Password Due To Breach
It looks like they may have used RSA encryption with a 4096 bit key [1] and as far as I know, if the private key is not compromised; this is pretty darn secure...Can anyone confirm?

mattwdelong··on LayerVault Sends DMCA Takedown Letter re Flat-UI
Does anyone notice a striking similarity between the "Debian swirl" and the e in Designmodo?

It's obviously not a copy of it, but rather an "inspired version" of it. With that being said, it's definitely possible that designmodo didn't copy layervault, but rather was "inspired" by them. Not sure how that would stand up legally, but I would say that if I were designer, it would be "ethically annoying".

mattwdelong··on How I Turned a $50 Idea Into a $5000/Month Business
No need to be snarky. Have you been on any freelance sites recently? I've seen grown men bid less than $10/hour - I can't attest to the quality of said bidders, but they're out there in amass. All things considered, $12/hr as a 16 year old is not that bad. When I was 16, I made $5.9/hr working at a gas station.
mattwdelong··on Ad-free Outlook and Hotmail ($19.95)
Yikes. If you're paying around $200/month (Not sure if this it total, or for each service, making it $400/month), would it not be feasible to invest in a VPS at linode and run your own mail server? You could even hire a decent system admin to look after it, and still save a few hundred dollars a month.

mattwdelong··on Show HN: 2u.fm is a social music discovery site, my side project for over a year
Nicely done, but I would seriously consider updating your daily limit. I did not have nearly enough time to play around to consider converting as a registered user (I was clicking around). I ended up just deleted the site cookies, went into inspect elements and deleted the modal but I am not your average user and most people wouldn't do that to continue testing out your site, let alone know it could be done.

After all that, I am pretty certain I will continue to use your app. Nice job!

mattwdelong··on Google Apps Disabled My Domain
Derek, this would be a cool project. If someone could work alongside a talented UX/Designer and bundle together some open source software with a nice UI, that would be quite useful. Roundcube seems to be taking a pretty good stab at this.
mattwdelong··on Google Apps Disabled My Domain
This is not really a well thought out response. Most businesses don't have the resources to employ a system administrator to manage their Windows install, let alone manage all the other services required to run to meet the same level of functionality that "ready to go" services like Google Apps provide. Seriously.
mattwdelong··on Google Apps Disabled My Domain
Thanks Mark, this is the mind of answer I was looking for. I think I tried Zoho a few years ago, but maybe I will check them out again.
mattwdelong··on Google Apps Disabled My Domain
Just for my own personal curiosity, has any company made a reasonable attempt at competing with Google apps core services? I know Microsoft offers similar services, but it's not that well "put together" the last time I looked.

You're probably not going to be able to compete with Google Drive integration, but if someone put together a well designed integration of inbox, calendar, and contacts with an API, they would do well.

mattwdelong··on Show HN: We got tired of getting gifts we don't like/need, so we made this
Is this a real problem?

I would never use this. First, I don't expect people to get me gifts. Secondly, even if I don't need/will never use the gift I received, it truely is the thought that counts. It's a bit ungracious to tell someone what to get me, no?

It all feels very alien and weird to me to have this problem. Maybe I'm weird.

mattwdelong··on A Damning Look at the Canadian Tech Sector
I would recommend that get_object_or_404, with the 404 page enabled, would be better suited for this application. Very similar methods, but this way just handles all the heavy lifting.

mattwdelong··on Status Chart: Your Personal Status Dashboard
There is a mental line between annual and "once and forever" type purchases. I think it comes down to the thought of getting more value and the fact that you own it..it's yours. Secondly, what if I purchase an annual subscription and forget about it the next year? I just paid another $25 for an app I stopped using over 10 months ago. I don't like that hassel of having to remember what my card is attached to and what random fees are going to come out each month, and that's why I don't like subscribing to anything.

I would rather drive a shitty used car at a one time $5k purchase price over a brand new car at $300/month. For the same reason, I also don't get into cell phone contracts and cable subscriptions. I don't know what subset of the population is like me, but I think it would surprise you.

mattwdelong··on Status Chart: Your Personal Status Dashboard
This is pretty neat, but it's not something I would enter my CC details for and pay for each month. I would however drop a one time ~$25 fee and self host it on my own server, and maybe use it. At least this way, I will see it running on my server and periodically update it.

I'm just one person of many, but when I see neat little apps like this I would always much rather pay for it outright than pay for it each month. I don't know why more people don't sell cool services like this. Chances are I am going to just cancel it after a month anyway.

mattwdelong··on Happy birthday Debian
It was 8 years ago when I started using Debian after trying out numerous distributions and it was the first one that just "worked" for me. I have been using it on all my servers, and my desktop (During the Vista years) ever since.

mattwdelong··on Show HN: Block yourself from the Internet until you write or code each day
I had a response written out, but took a step back to see what other people had to say. You've pretty much summed up what I had to say in fewer words. I absolute deplore the parent comment, which is the typical response to these kinds of "hacks". While they're not ideal to actually solve the problem, they may mitigate the symptoms until they can solve the root cause. To each their own, and what works for one will not work for another. Keep on keeping on.
