mattw2121··on Why doctors pay millions in fees that could be spent on care
Would love to see doctors and medical facilities nationwide convert, en masse, to paper checks. Let's see how quickly the insurers back off the fees.
mattw2121··on Bots can complete CAPTCHAs quicker than humans
"For distorted text fields, humans took 9-15 seconds with an accuracy of just 50-84 percent. Bots, on the other hand, beat the tests in less than a second with 99.8 percent accuracy."

I'm guessing part of the answer is (and most likely already implemented in things like reCAPTCHA) is rate limiting and detecting bots when they solve these too quickly.

mattw2121··on Prop 13 Is Not Passed on to Renters
Thanks, but I live in Florida. I'm not familiar with rent control laws, since we don't have any. In fact, rent control laws are forbidden in Florida.
mattw2121··on Prop 13 Is Not Passed on to Renters
I don't know exactly what the answer is. If a rental property has a long term renter, I don't want to see that tenant have their rent increased by huge amounts year over year. I'm a life long conservative, but I see huge value in making sure landlords can't kick out well behaved, paying on time tenants. I also believe that landlords should be severely limited in the amount they can increase rent at renewal time.
mattw2121··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
One point to remember is that during the pandemic, customers were much more sympathetic to everyone. The overall quality of customer service has gone done since the pandemic (even in companies that returned to office) and we, the customer, are forgiving of that. Pre-pandemic, we were not nearly as forgiving.
mattw2121··on Most in U.S. (57%) prefer big houses, even if amenities farther away
Yes, my bad...humidity decreases some in the hottest part of the day. So the 80% humidity is overnight while the high 90's temperature is during the day.

As you said, still not walkable :).

mattw2121··on Most in U.S. (57%) prefer big houses, even if amenities farther away
I have a great concept of walking in a city. I enjoy the walkability of NYC. When I am there I take transit everywhere and it's great.

I live in Florida. It gets into the high 90's with 80% humidity. At the same time NYC is in the 80's with 50% humidity.

There are places that just aren't walkable certain times of the year.

mattw2121··on US tax code blamed as wealthy see major retirement account gains
Hemel complains that "...the top 10th of households reap a larger share of the income tax subsidy for retirement savings than the bottom 80%."

He fails to mention that the top 10% of households pay 70% of all federal income tax.

mattw2121··on Build mini hydropower on a small stream with a powerful unit [video]
The creek looks human dug to begin with, so probably just stopped the flow at the upstream reservoir.

Pee-wee: Come on, Dottie. Let's go.

Dottie: Let's go? Don't you wanna see the rest of the movie?

Pee-wee: I don't have to see it, Dottie. I lived it.

mattw2121··on Enhance – HTML-first full stack web framework
Agreed...and honestly I didn't scroll any further. I saw, "No Javascript Required" and scrolled back to the top, went to the docs and looked at the example so I could see what this was like. Then I saw Javascript.

I just think that if you are saying so boldly that you don't need to use Javascript, then maybe your first example should be without Javascript?

mattw2121··on Enhance – HTML-first full stack web framework
The very first mention of Javascript on the site is a huge graphic (full width) that says "NO JAVASCRIPT REQUIRED".
mattw2121··on Enhance – HTML-first full stack web framework
Same thing. Saw "No Javascript" and then went to the example app....nothing but Javascript?
mattw2121··on Coal use hit an all-time high last year
The US is the 2nd largest energy user in the world -- China is 1st.

This story is about coal usage. China and India use far more coal than the US.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/coal-cons...

mattw2121··on Coal use hit an all-time high last year
"coal demand fell faster than previously expected in the first half of this year in the United States and the European Union — by 24% and 16%, respectively" ..... "demand from the two largest consumers, China and India, grew by over 5% during the first half, more than offsetting declines elsewhere"

This is the crux. Despite the shaming I continually receive here in the US any time I am not 100% supportive of "green" initiatives, other countries are going to do what other countries are going to do.

mattw2121··on Stack Overflow's CEO Doesn't Understand Stack Overflow
Most large corporations block ChatGPT and Discord usage. Developers at those companies still have access to SO.
mattw2121··on Before the Internet, there was The Fontana Dictionary of Modern Thought
Before the Internet, my friends and I would call the research desk at the local library. We'd sit around someone's house and have a debate over some topic. If, and when, we had a point of contention that we couldn't resolve with the resources at hand, we'd phone up the research desk. The folks at our local library were more than happy to place the phone down on the desk, go grab some reference material, and then pick the phone back up and give us a definitive answer.
mattw2121··on Medicaid Could Save $2.6B Within a Year If Just 1% of Recipients Quit Smoking
30 million people smoke

$1.50 per pack tax (1.01 fed, giving high estimate for state taxes)

2 packs a day (high)

(30,000,000 x 1%) x (1.5 x 2) x (2 x 365) = 657,000,000

You'd need 4% to quit to even out.

mattw2121··on Farmworkers thought a new overtime law would help them. Now, they want it gone
They are going to end up with workers at 2 farms, doing 35 hours a week at each.
mattw2121··on Farmworkers thought a new overtime law would help them. Now, they want it gone
100 workers working 70 hours a week at 20/hour:

(100 x 40 x 20) + (100 x 30 x 30) = 170,000

200 workers working 35 hours a week at 20/hour:

200 x 35 x 20 = 140,000

mattw2121··on Federal Zoning Bill Would Preempt Local Parking Mandates
This is a good distinction. Thank you!
mattw2121··on Federal Zoning Bill Would Preempt Local Parking Mandates
I don't know exactly how to feel about this. On one hand, I'm in complete agreement that property owners should get to decide how much (if any) parking they build. On the other hand, I don't like this is codified at the federal level.
mattw2121··on Is Gmail killing independent email?
Exactly this. I enjoyed the technical aspects of running my own mail server. I hated having to constantly manage black lists and dealing with "postmasters" to get my email to be consistently delivered. Some spammer manages to hack a server on the same IP block as you equals trouble for months. I just couldn't justify the time spent and the non-delivery any longer.
mattw2121··on Startup CEOs learned engineering management from captain kirk
I see a similar situation in the large corporation I work for and it's toxic. It all boils down to leader worship. There's a huge segment of managers that are completely unwilling to tell anyone higher in the chain of command "no" or push back on anything even when the request is unrealistic.

The lack of a backbone means that teams are continually in emergency mode, trying to push something through so that some manager can prove to some person above them that they can deliver things. The result is that whatever was asked for is usually delivered in a subpar way, but all the boxes were checked and everyone thinks it was done. it becomes another thing on the pile of technical debt that will be dealt with another day.

mattw2121··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
I strongly disagree. I would love for a search engine to, intelligently, cater the results based on my previous search history and patterns.
mattw2121··on Why employees hate ‘pizza parties’ but HR loves having them
To me, the key phrase in this article was "most organisations still subtly force people to show up under the garb of networking and engagement and even fun."

There's the issue to me. Have all the pizza parties you want, but I hate the undertones that you're not a team player if you don't show up to a voluntary function after work hours.
