mattstreet··on Keeping a debugging journal
Yeah for clusters/super computers...I mean you'd think more than one person wants to use them right?
mattstreet··on The Cheapest Generation
I'm a Gen X'er and I totally think this way. I'm not sure how many X/Y'ers pay attention but I know some of us also lay a lot of blame on the car markers for shaping our cities into the car focused messes they are today.
mattstreet··on Nexus 5 Teardown
Because Google really wants you to use their cloud services. Like seriously, even if you have shitty data service in your area.
mattstreet··on Snapchat is Intrinsically Worthless
Don't you feel a bit dirty coming up with those ideas?
mattstreet··on Bitcoin, The Economic Singularity: From Holland with Love
Require real money for things related to those services? Such as buying gasoline?

Doesn't injecting JavaScript give you access?
mattstreet··on Coding Interview Tips
Yeah but judging someone's ability to code by several good <1000LOC projects is probably better than the sorts of coding problems you have time to give someone during a coding interview.

mattstreet··on Why Don’t More Men Pursue Female-Dominated Professions?
I'm not sure what you mean by "the American academy" but modern feminism has a lot to say about the negative effects of the patriarchy on men. One major example of this is the way men are pressured to work certain jobs rather than others, or to not seek help for physical or especially emotional problems.

Saying that men cannot be oppressed because they are the oppressors seems to come out mostly from MRA strawman talking points.

mattstreet··on Why didn't we patent the spreadsheet? Were we stupid? (1999)
DRM does not usually attempt to protect the design or inner workings of software, it only tries to restrict its distribution.
mattstreet··on Google vs. Death
How about the probability of some accident killing you (however small) multiplied for the millions or billions of years you're alive?
mattstreet··on Report Suggests Nearly Half of U.S. Jobs Are Vulnerable to Computerization
No, because the rest of the world isn't doing that too. But if the WORLD doesn't need everyone to be doing crappy labor, why would we invent work for them to do, instead of just sharing in the new wealth created by our technology.
mattstreet··on New Snowden Leak Reports 'Groundbreaking' NSA Crypto-Cracking
Are we blaming him that so many of our actions are embarrassing? Or that they come back to hurt us later?
mattstreet··on Meet the Hackers Who Want to Jailbreak the Internet
Openness helps people who aren't ready to reimplement the whole thing try to iterate their idea on top of what already exists, rather than doing the 98% of the work that is the same as the other product plus the even harder 2% brand new concept work.
mattstreet··on State Attorney fires IT director who raised concerns in Trayvon Martin case
Perfect example of money equaling justice. A multi million wouldn't worry about the cost of any software that might provide any useful evidence.
mattstreet··on I understood gender discrimination once I added “Mr.” to my resume
He isn't an American. Not all countries have the same laws.
mattstreet··on Encrypt your Google chats and make the NSA sad
What would be hard is also making sure that packet sniffers in the middle wouldn't be able to detect it. Specially with all the varieties of router hardware. Are we going to have a backdoor in all of them that prevents passing on that data?
mattstreet··on Encrypt your Google chats and make the NSA sad
What about the stage where they just process the hell out of all the data they have about you and keep a profile?

mattstreet··on JQuery 2.0 Released
I think we'll get a lot less from the open source community if they think they have to support all legacy crap for all time. Eventually there comes a time to move on.

We're just arguing about if its time yet. People can still keep using IE 6/7 for the shitty inhouse apps written for it by their company a decade ago, and use a damn modern browser for everything else.

mattstreet··on Gitmo Is Killing Me
Well I think he could put a bit more public pressure on them then. I really don't hear him bringing it up too often.
mattstreet··on So I hit "TAB" and Google mail sends the partially composed message?
More counter-productive than odd. Since most of us are already used to using tab in browsers and forms.

But yeah, it sucks to write a real amount of text in a texbox that doesn't let you use tab. Of course you can always write in another editor and then put it in the textbox.

Even easier if you use something like this:https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/its-all-text/

mattstreet··on Until Today, If You Were 17, It Could Have Been Illegal To Read Seventeen.com
YUP and you get run off the road half the time if you're only driving the speed limit. And risk pissing off the cops when they aren't ticketing for going too slow.
mattstreet··on How driverless cars will affect our cities
Some of the comments here point out how driverless cars would allow people to just call for a car when they need it, a sort of on demand taxi.

I'd like to take it one step further and point out that it may make electric cars even more viable. If a car is going to be waiting until someone calls for one, rather than driving around the city looking for people - we could have a certain factor of "extra" cars charging while they wait.

When you then request a car, the system would send you one that is sufficiently charged. When you arrive the car will reenter the system and recharge.

mattstreet··on Facebook knows you’re gay before you do
You do know that the medical profession has figured out a small amount of alcohol (a drink or so) after the first trimester isn't a problem, right?
mattstreet··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
I'm starting to think you work for De Beers...
mattstreet··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
The end result is you should talk to your partner and find out what they want and discus it.

If I had bought my wife a diamond ring it would have showed her I really didn't know her.

Pull out whatever study you want that says men are wired X and women are wired Y - that study is based on samples and statistics. You'll find plenty of girls that like trucks and boys that like dolls. Treat the people around you like individuals who can have both male and female traits and their own unique personality.

mattstreet··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
So childbirth is extremely dangerous but adopting a kid already out there looking for a home isn't an option for an educated couple...you'd rather your wife risk her health.

That's some useful education.

mattstreet··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
Commitment, really? How does it signal commitment? Are men that give big diamond rings less likely to cheat or get divorced?
