mattr47··on Rwanda just released the first smartphone made entirely in Africa
He has support because if you voice against him you end up in prison, jail or exile.

I'm not saying he didn't do great things to stop the genocide in 94, but the country is the way it is because he rules with an iron fist.

mattr47··on California power outage triggers chaos in science labs
Most countries that experience rolling blackouts have certain levels of corruption in a socialized government.

All because of a law suit. Great job California.

mattr47··on Pagers, faxes and cheques: Things that might seem obsolete, but aren't
At USAA the basic checks are free. I average 1.3 checks per month. One box will last 9 years.

What medical data is sent via pages? All the times I've used them it is a simple code, and possibly a location.
mattr47··on Human speech may have a universal transmission rate: 39 bits per second
In my initial Army job I had to learn how to copy Morse code. I got up to a respectable 23 groups per minute (a group is 5 characters). If I remember right, beyond about 13-15 GPM, once the code stopped transmitting I would still write for another 20 seconds or so. It was not something I consciously did, it just backed up in my brain.
mattr47··on How a secret Dutch mole aided the U.S.-Israeli Stuxnet cyberattack on Iran
Well that is basically how we came into existence, right? Its not like some all powerful creator programmed our DNA. So, the same random events can happen with computer viruses.
mattr47··on Airbnb quietly shut down a top host amid scathing reviews but guest were to stay
$30 a night plus a $20 cleaning fee and another 20 to Airbnb. Nah, I'll take a hotel.
mattr47··on New York City Neighbors Build Cheaper Way to Connect to Web
Not an issue really for liability.

mattr47··on YouTube faces creator backlash
It is definitely possible. Imagine an engineer gets approached by some other corporation that wants to boost a few videos, ads, etc.

It would not take much to nudge the system in that direction. The resulting payoffs could be in the billions.

mattr47··on Reddit AMA: I'm a Former Amazon Fulfillment Center Employee
Amazon's starting wage is $15 / hour.
mattr47··on Seattle Faces Backlash After Easing on Crimes Involving Mental Illness
Nope, not buying this excuse. They don't want food directly because they want cash to go buy other crap.

Hey look, I get it, being homeless sucks, but the situation the OP is describing is not working. Seattle, SF & LA have all become shit cities because of the way the govt handles homelessness. They enable not assist.

mattr47··on Cheap automatic license plate readers are creeping into neighborhoods
License plates are public information. There is no website or state DMV that you, a private citizen, can go to and get the information on the plate's owner.
mattr47··on Former Boeing Engineers Say Relentless Cost-Cutting Sacrificed Safety
The title 'Software Engineer' is an over used term imo that describes any developer out there.

That title should be reserved for those that have the same credentials as an ME, EE, etc. Someone who is a CS degree holder or a self taught comp dev have in no way the same training as someone with a CE degree.

Engineers are able to take their PE exam in either CE or SE. https://ncees.org/engineering/pe/

mattr47··on Czech Republic proposes the highest digital tax rate in Europe
I dont know about the cheap part. When I travel in the US I stay in hotels that normally run about $150/night, and they are usually pretty nice. When I look at comparable AirBnB rentals they are the same price or even more with those cleaning fees.

For the most part I stick with hotels.

mattr47··on Ask HN: Can I download my HN data?
It does not apply as HN is not in the EU. If an EU citizen does not want their data collected then they can choose not to participate, as the EU has no jurisdiction over HN.
mattr47··on The Looming Danger of Non-Banks
Yes they can. It all depends on the policy. For example USAA routinely insures service members and those policies have a rider for dying in combat. And it is only a couple buck for a month on a normal $500k policy. When I retired I took that rider off.

Pretty much any insurance company does the same.
