mattjoyce··on Gemini 4 Argon
I agree with you, except I really don't hear that term much. People just say it wrong or confused. Good riddance, it was always a bad term.
mattjoyce··on Gemini 4 Argon
Its always been a bad term. If we wanted an accurate term then it's 'confabulation', but 'muddled' or just 'wrong' are also good.
mattjoyce··on Gemini 4 Argon
Hallucination seems a very dated term.
mattjoyce··on Claude Opus 5.5
Pace is a very commonly used term in projects to describe a rate of progress.
mattjoyce··on Suzanne Ciani's Buchla Cookbook
Its a software emulation of hardware modular. It good fun to noodle about with. Does provide a good experience of modular.
mattjoyce··on Key symbols we lost to time, pt. 1: The PC side
I live these types of posts. Everything is always changing. For keyboards ist keys, symbols and layouts. Who can imagine not having several modifiers and just not knowing how and when to use them.

I particularly enjoyed learning the origin of the symbols, for shift, enter tab and backspace and how they survived as text replaced their siblings. I wish we could have symbols for therefore and approximatly.

As someone who has designed and built a few keyboards, this was fascinating.

mattjoyce··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
You're absolutely right.
mattjoyce··on An Alien Mind
Ooh interesting. Sometime do the reverse at work, and ask AI to annotate the critical success factors of an imagined project. How did this company succeed where everyone failed. Reverse imaging.
mattjoyce··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
A few weeks ago I downloaded a memory dump of a zx81 game, and ask Claude to build it in Go. It nailed it. Converted the binary back to basic and then to go. My idea was that the game would be unknown to llm training and perhaps a nice bench.

What a crazy thing it is to be first at the advent of personal computing, and then in the inflection point where AI treats that first experience as archeology.

mattjoyce··on Show HN: Echo – Fable-level results at 1/3 the cost using open-weight models
well spotted, I couldn't place the feeling, me it's like paying per minute phone costs when downloading on a modem. You know it will cost, but you do it anyway.

The other weird thing about the subs is that if the agents aren't grinding if feels like I'm losing money.

mattjoyce··on How to stop Claude from saying load-bearing
The name for the phenomena could be Ananthropsis, noticing something is not from human
mattjoyce··on Fable is not a useful model
Intent? Motivations? Incentives?
mattjoyce··on The classifiers Anthropic puts in front of Fable are too zealous
The post can be distilled down to a simple statement, but part of the writing is for the author to express themselves and tell a story. I thought it was an interesting read.
mattjoyce··on Steam Machine launches today
Scalper:by increasing prices we add the value of enabling people to express their desire more faithfully.
mattjoyce··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
This post is a link to a reply to a tweet containing a screenshot of a webpage.

Unusable internet.

mattjoyce··on Nobody clicks share buttons
Sure the idea isn't that every page should be shared equally?

Is the percentage of sharing based all visited pages and is that a good way measure it?

Imagine if all the very low sharing was from 3 pages, that would be a signal worth investigating.

mattjoyce··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
Therefore the purpose of a system is to support incentives.
mattjoyce··on OpenAI mulls slashing prices as it competes with Anthropic for users
At the right price, these model don't need to be the best, good enough will do. I think we're fast approaching good enough for most users.
mattjoyce··on Show HN: Lathe – Use LLMs to learn a new domain, not skip past it
Oh my, this sounds like an idea I have been toying with. I really want a tutor to explain how random repos I find work.

Do you think Lathe could be adapted to use a codebase as the source material?

mattjoyce··on Ask HN: What's your favorite HN Recap like podcast?

mattjoyce··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
I'm quite curious about this.

I think this is similar. Unfinished. https://github.com/mattjoyce/roundtable-consensus

mattjoyce··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
Out of a the stuff beyond a shadow of a doubt the most useful is https://ductile.run

This started off as a fancy cron with webhook and became a comprehensive runtime. I have been using it for months on several systems.

mattjoyce··on LLMs are breaking 20 year old system design
Durable is used 13 times in this article.
mattjoyce··on Changes in the system prompt between Claude Opus 4.6 and 4.7
Ad companies prompt injecting consumers. LLM companies countering with guardrails.
mattjoyce··on South Korea introduces universal basic mobile data access
Maybe the reduction in gov paper forms printing and processing, offset the mobile costs.
mattjoyce··on Show HN: Kula – Lightweight, self-contained Linux server monitoring tool
I still use it. A few months ago I whipped up a project to monitor my Unraid NAS. Rrdtool is very useful still.
mattjoyce··on Parler social network sues Amazon for pulling support
> It is their right to break the contract because they don't want to deal with you, but then they have to pay a fine because they were engaged in a contract with you and they broke it.

That would depend on the terms.

mattjoyce··on Parler social network sues Amazon for pulling support
Yes, I can imagine a telephone company terminating a service, if you don't adhere to the term. In fact they are very very strict.

Also, email is still available, don't pretend these services are all there is, it just isn't so.

mattjoyce··on Show HN: Symmetrical Drawing Tool for Doodling
Very nice, and fun too. I wanted more colours, almost right away. No orange, but a black background!!!
mattjoyce··on Del.icio.us
Absolutely yes. These days if I see an interesting content on my phone, I share to Google Keep. Periodically I look in keep and take another pass at what I saved.
