"If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it." –J. P. Morgan
matthoiland··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
I did the same thing. I need OSX, but hate the current laptop lineup. So I got a Mac Mini, eGPU, and a killer screen. Cheaper than an iMac, crazy performance, and very upgradable (apart from the soldiered SSD). Looking hard at a Thinkpad for my next laptop, even as a strict OSX user since 2004.
matthoiland··on Spotify Saved the Music Industry (But Not Necessarily Musicians)
I don't think Spotify (streaming services) are influencing the composition of new music – listening habits are mostly unchanged since popular music in the 50's. The 3-minute song with the initial hook is a product of 50's AM radio. Whereas Radiohead/Sigur Ros/Slowdive artists with long builds do so intentionally, and their listeners enjoy that about them.

But.... what has changed is the frequency in which artists need to release content in order to compete in the algorithm arena. Some artists understand this, and more singles, EPs and early album previews allow for more "touch points" with their audiences throughout the year.

matthoiland··on Spotify Saved the Music Industry (But Not Necessarily Musicians)
As an amateur musician I still make most of my monthly sales from iTunes. Streaming pays so little, unless you're a big name – which incentivizes the big labels while squeezing the smaller artists.

Early platform like Lala (bought by Apple) had a cool model – $0.10 per song, but you can only stream it. Ownership was still there, and artists were paid equally per sale.

Nevertheless, getting your music distributed is easier today than ever, and I'm sure all artists are grateful for that.

matthoiland··on NBC took Bob Costas off the Super Bowl for speaking out about concussions
Anecdotal, but the eSport Overwatch League is the first time I actually enjoyed watching a spectator sport. Every other sport feels like tribalism and favors a brand over strategy and skill. These kids playing these eSports are crazy brilliant strategists, making decision in milliseconds, and breaking down their plays after the fact is utterly fascinating. –36/M USA.
matthoiland··on Oregon Bottle Deposit System Hits 90 Percent Redemption Rate
You make look silly with two giant garbage bags hanging off your bike, but at the end of the day who's holding on to 20 bucks? It felt like a fortune back then, and was an honest hard days work.
matthoiland··on Every new web app at PayPal starts with TypeScript
Part of me feels the same way. I've been through AS3, Coffeescript, Dart, and now the Typescript hypewagons.

I'm willing to give it a deep dive, but I'd rather see an optional flag in an upcoming ES version for types and other TS superset features.

matthoiland··on Jellyfish Genome Hints That Complexity Isn’t Genetically Complex
If I were to examine two programs that operate identically, but one has 1/10 lines of code, I would assume it is more efficient, more fault tolerant, more general purpose/reusable, and would assume a more competent developer wrote it. edit Not making a case for intelligent design – absolutely not.
matthoiland··on Jellyfish Genome Hints That Complexity Isn’t Genetically Complex
Here's the obligatory link to Conways Game of Life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life

>Scholars in various fields, such as computer science, physics, biology, biochemistry, economics, mathematics, philosophy, and generative sciences have made use of the way that complex patterns can emerge from the implementation of the game's simple rules

matthoiland··on Basic features that will hopefully return to the MacBook Pro
The arrow key layout gets me cursing faster than anything else. I simply can't reliably find them by touch.

matthoiland··on Field Guide for Designing Human Interaction with Intelligent Systems (1998) [pdf]
This is amazing. Thank you!

This should be called, "How to explain UX/UI to engineers".

matthoiland··on Ask HN: Have you built a house?
Be sure to look into cob and strawbale construction. Quite a bit hippy, but also a better process for the first time owner-builder.

There's a book called The Hand-Sculpted House. Also Google "cob house" and "strawbale house".

matthoiland··on Musk’s Money Mystery Intrigues SEC
Is Musk constantly inside-joking himself? Why $420 a share? Why do his car models spell S3X? Is his internal email bong69@boring.com? I love this guy.
matthoiland··on This is a webpage (2013)
This is a reply.
matthoiland··on Has Vue passed React yet?
Reminds me of http://isitsnowinginpdx.com/.

I'm rooting for Vue.

matthoiland··on Bitcoin is the greatest scam in history
> the same tired anti-Bitcoin arguments we've all been reading since 2010

Agreed. Sounds like he read an article from 2013, learned that Bitcoin isn't a physical coin, then immediately turned to the internet with his opinion.

I'll repeat the other argument we've heard since 2010. It's not about Bitcoin – it's about Blockchain technology. It's probably revolutionary. Still too early to really know.

matthoiland··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
I like this! Would help to sit back and layout the overall structure from a distance to get a proper feel.

Also, reminds me of the Celery Man sketch from Tim and Eric. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHWBEK8w_YY

matthoiland··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
https://www.telltali.com/ – Voice-first timekeeping for Alexa and Google Assistant. I think it's cool because we're solving real business problems with voice. Win/win.
matthoiland··on Leveraging Bitcoin to Solve Venezuela’s Hyperinflation
This is fantastic. Disasters, while terrible, should be the time to think outside the box. Similar to Puerto Rico and the solar experiment – hopefully Venezuela and Bitcoin will be the proof of concept that convinces the "adults".
matthoiland··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
Welcome to the USA. Uninsured appendectomy in California – now I owe $45k. #freedom
matthoiland··on Bootstrap 4

matthoiland··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
> It's a huge lesson in selflessness and humility.

We can all use more of these lessons.

matthoiland··on Microsoft launches Windows 10 on ARM
The A11 chip is insane for a tablet. Would love to see a Surface Pro with this performance.
matthoiland··on Don't Buy Anyone an Echo
The Clapper was a big hit for a reason.
matthoiland··on Alexa for Business
Anyone who bills in small increments, has their hands busy, or is on the go.
matthoiland··on Alexa for Business
The biggest is invocations – as more skills crowd the platform, getting Alexa to recognize our invocation is getting unusable.

Training for our specific pronunciation isn't available on Alexa. Our app is called Tali, pronounced "tally", and to get it to work now you have to say "Tay-lie". Whereas Google Actions can be trained with custom pronunciations.

I should also say that Dialogflow is magnificent.

matthoiland··on Alexa for Business
It would be nice if the Alexa team actually cared about people building business skills for the platform and treated them different than people submitting fart apps.

Disclaimer: I build business tools for voice with actual paid users. Looking to abandon Alexa for Google Assistant and Cortana. Apple, please do Siri right when you open it up properly.

matthoiland··on Pixelmator Pro released
With Photoshop being so sluggish recently I'm willing to try anything.

Just a few minutes in with Pixelmator Pro and I can see myself using this quite a bit – even just the little things like creating a new file and setting canvas dimensions, this takes ages on Photoshop now.

Although, I hate the native color picker. Being able to paste in hex values is important to me – bringing in a Photoshop or Sketch-like color picker would be much appreciated.

matthoiland··on The Yamaha NS10 Story – How a Hi-Fi Speaker Conquered the Studio World (2008)
They are a perfect blend of terrible sounding, but consistently terrible sounding. Any set, in any studio would sound the same.
