matthiasak··on Tech Companies Still Aren’t Hiring Black Workers
well, how dare they!?!?
matthiasak··on Iron Yard code school to close all campuses
Ex TIY employee here. I only left the place because I wanted to go back to developing fulltime.

As someone who worked with the instructors and campuses, the global team, and taught for years at The Iron Yard, I can tell you the team -- especially the campus teams -- were largely the right mix of talent - great engineers that cared about communicating well and respecting folks from all walks of life.

With that said, after the investment rounds some things definitely began to take shape:

1. The global staff slowly became more and more steps removed from the daily convo's of the instructors and campus directors

2. There were regional managers and others who were brand new to the business; the company hired mostly from outside to bring in management team and half of them never ran a local campus first (to me their credentials from prior positions didn't always matter). They should have hired all mgmt from within, as they sadly did not mirror the culture of the campus teams.

3. There's such a plethora of schools out there now competing for the same customer-base. The Iron Yard spent a LOT of time, effort, and money making some of the best curriculum I've ever seen - including its own platform for distributing content, videos, running live-editable code blocks of any language on Docker instances on the fly, and homework and review features for staff. But a lot of places competed on price and still operated without approval from state education boards or meeting any national standards.

4. Instructors needed a change of pace, as they are constant learners too. Any churn and change of staff usually meant that "If it wasn't documented, then the lessons were not learned in-full for the next employee". So, I definitely saw some campuses run into trouble because when a veteran employee left (no upward movement for them, etc because there was already too much mgmt in-place) the impact was quite hard.

I loved the team, but ultimately a few miscalculated moves and operational/strategic retries burned the candle at both ends faster than the mgmt expected.

matthiasak··on So I started a conference Space City JS
Been a TON of work. Would love feedback on the design, marketing, etc.

If anyone lives in TX, would love to have you attend :-)

matthiasak··on Welcome to Tech-sas, a Houston Hackathon by the Community, for the Community.
The Iron Yard is planning a tech conference by the community, for the community – right here in Houston! We are collaborating with companies like January Advisors (http://januaryadvisors.com), Two Sigma (https://www.twosigma.com/), RED Labs (http://redlabs.bauer.uh.edu/), and the City of Houston office – with a full range of media coverage (radio, publishers, etc). We are working on putting together several other partnerships, and would love to have tech companies involved.

The premise of the event is to invite over 250 people, with little-to-no coding experience, and spend the day learning basic website development. Local talent – like myself – will lead a small group through a short instruction, followed by a lab to build something. The sweet deal? Attendance is free, and upon completion of the event, participants who didn’t previously know how to code will have built their very own landing page. Instructors and others who attend will have the chance to mingle with some power-house developers and companies in Houston.

Our goal is to raise awareness of the expanding Houston tech-and-startup scene, and cultivate a new community of professionals who bring a wealth of talent from the industries that call our brilliant city home. (Healthcare, Energy, Oil, Finance, the list goes on…) To top it off, we have local roasters supplying the coffee and local eateries supplying the food. All-in-all, this will be the perfect storm to nurture the “Tech-sas” community that we all know exists. As such, since this is an event with drinks, we are targeting college students and older – for both networking opportunities and for the obvious vices being provided.

We would love if you could join in, attend, or instruct. We are looking to get about 20 technologists who can be part of the event, and just provide a few hours of basic instruction on web technologies.

Additionally, we are looking for local companies to help sponsor. The Iron Yard is already fronting almost all of the costs. We just want to make sure the food, booze, and space is covered. All of this is being planned as we speak. Just attend and help us nurture something special (that might be able to turn into a recurring event in the future, for all skill-levels!).

You can find out more about the event and direct others to it here:

matthiasak··on Show HN: My new JavaScript MVC framework
tiny, small, idiomatic javascript;

uses POJOs; has just enough 'binding'; uses routing and basic promise/A+ implementation.

I'd say this is good and as high level as one should go if they want to churn really good performance out of an app.

Keep it coming mate, and link with me on Twitter. I used a number of micro frameworks and my own glue to make my own mini-framework using much of the same concepts, only I used a templating engine called doT instead of declaring my HTML structure in JS (although I know it is easily possible to generate view code with a tool/script with HTML as input).

This is nice.
matthiasak··on Ask HN: Client side storage JavaScript libraries?
I wrote a library that lets you store and retrieve from Local Storage https://github.com/matthiasak/Loader.

Local Storage is ie8+, so if you need to support less than that, you might need a polyfill https://github.com/Modernizr/Modernizr/wiki/HTML5-Cross-Brow...

var x = 5, y = 6 // typical JS

matthiasak··on Ask HN: Fitness, looking great, and performing your best
Intermittent Fasting (IF) is great. I really found that it was more helpful to read up on Ketogenic cycles and Autophagy (the process of removing waste/toxins from cells). Check out Bulletproof Executive and look up some papers on PubMed on these. They are great!

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=autophagy%20fasting

I have found that, after moving away from the Slow-carb diet and moving towards a more Paleo diet, I have more energy, can sleep less, and perform better.

More importantly, I want to help with things like not wasting the vitamins I ingest and help my dental health. Thus I have been trying to not have hardly any gluten or even legumes and oats because they contain Uric Acid, which prevents the body's ability to process vitamins in the gut. See: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21501233, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16643619, http://www.gout-pal.com/lowering-uric-acid/2009/08/

From 4 Hour Body and Bulletproof Executive, both have found that Cold Exposure indeed does help raise the energy burned by your body by recruiting Brown Adipose Tissue to burn off White Adipose Tissue (Fat cells!)

Also, I find that taking a Cold Shower before going to bed helps me fall asleep drastically faster (from 30-40 minutes to less than ten minutes)

Valid request.

After 2 weeks, I have dropped about 10 pounds from nutrition improvements combined with exercise.

I have gone from a slight pudge to a more flattened midriff.

I'm expecting in a few weeks to have a quite visible six pack.

matthiasak··on Ask HN: tips for fueling your brain each day?
Also, for food, I follow the Upgraded Life / Bulletproof Diet. Also awesome and amazing, but I was almost eating paleo 2.0 anyways. Before this I was following the Slow-Card Diet as described by Tim Ferriss in 4 Hour Body.

For sleep I recommend these things. I've been experimenting for the past month and I now regularly sleep only 5 hours a night and I feel AWESOME all day with the Bulletproof coffe / Bulletproof diet combo and these things:

1.using F.Lux or just turning down your screen's brightness an hour before bed time 2. 20 minutes before bed I like to take a 15 minute shower. Start with hot water and lather up, followed by 10 minutes of progressively colder and colder water and sit in the shower for 3 more minutes under ice cold water. The temperature change will cause your body (Brown Adipose Tissue) to try to burn up the outer layers of fat (White Adipose Tissue), heating up your system. You will fall asleep pretty quickly as an added benefit, as long as you try to go to sleep right after. 3. Have some saturated fats before bed. That 'groggy' head you might wake up with is because you are dehydrated and have low blood sugar when you wake up.

matthiasak··on Ask HN: tips for fueling your brain each day?
It sounds awful, and you don't need to buy the advertised product online. I recommend you give this a try just one morning and let me know how you feel.

I use locally roasted coffee and Kerry Gold Irish Butter (Grass-fed butter). It has changed my life.

matthiasak··on Ask HN: Miracle acne cure?
Just to add a little more detail, insulin spikes themselves (hormonal response to food, etc) cause other hormonal responses that trigger everything from weight gain, to oil production, to lack of sleep and stress response. One particular thing to note is how much the strong and hard insulin spikes raise cortisol levels. Cortisol production can highly affect the level of oil and stress you are under, further throwing your body into a loop. If you are causing yourself to create and release a high excess of cortisol, then you will find that the rest of your body's systems (skin, hair, cardiovascular, etc) will have profound and often adverse affects.
matthiasak··on Ask HN: Miracle acne cure?
polyfractal says it best with [http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4893197].

I would like to add some things.

The oil produced very much depends on diet, and your body's own ability to combat the growth of extraneous bacteria (There is lots of bacteria in your body that is GOOD for you).

For what it's worth, your body's immune system uses Vitamin D, and the best way to help that? Get Outside! You'll notice that surfers and active beachgoers tend to have clear skin more often than not.

Lots of water is just too important to not reiterate. Try to shoot for one glass of water every hour. Want a helpful reminder? Set your own calendar alerts on your phone.

Be careful of causing frequent insulin spikes. Fruits, Starches, Sugars, Grains, and Dairy are all stronger insulinotropics (produce a high response in release of insulin) than vegetables, healthy fats, and meats. Having more leafy vegetables and healthy fats (Omega 3s, 100% Grass-fed (Grass-finished) red meats and even grass-fed butter) will flatten out that response to insulin. (You may lose weight by flattening out this insulin level as well).

Essentially, everything is a hormonal response. At the end of the day, once you improve what's inside, your outsides will vastly improve as well.

With that said, there isn't hope lost once you do have the acne occur. You can use [egg white + coffee] face masks (homemade recipes can easily be found), and spot treatment Benzoyl Peroxide. However I wouldn't recommend doing daily Benzoyl Treatments (Proactive) without making sure you follow the system to the 'T'. The moisturizers are essential and basically required. If you don't use them as provided then you won't fix the acne.

You can also just use Murad's Redness Therapy if the acne is red but not ready to surface [http://www.sephora.com/redness-therapy-correcting-moisturize...] Although I recommend the lotion version, not the cleanser version.

You can also use straight up brewed coffee. Rubbing your skin with coffee grinds (as recommend by some places) can scratch your skin, but taking a paper towel and dipping it in hot coffee, and letting that rest on your face for a few minutes will open up the pores and let the caffeine absorb through your skin. Caffeine provides many things, will make your skin more vibrant, but most importantly it is a vasoconstrictor (tightens capillaries that may by causing redness). It even helps fight some of the mold/toxins (The higher the caffeine content of the coffee, for instance, the easier it is for the bean itself to fight off mold before it is roasted).

If you want to have more life-changing information, just keep reading! Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss is a great step, but his writing is really only a stepping stone. For the next step of reading I really recommend Dave Asprey's Bulletproof Executive. Check his stuff out at BulletProofExec.com.

matthiasak··on On Mongo Rants ...
I agree there has been a lot of 'negative' reviews and anecdotes. Mongo has its own market and its own purpose. The idiots who don't take the time to understand it fully, or even 50% of the way, will certainly run into caveats. This happens in EVERY DEV ENVIRONMENT. Not just Mongo...

Think XCode... Postgres... Cassandra... REDIS... jQuery... .NET anyone?

Negativity levels are a reflection on one's own preparations (or lack thereof).
