matthews2··on What seven hours in London teaches me about surveillance capitalism
> how many cameras there are monitoring every moment of your life

In some areas, they get local curtain twitchers to volunteer and watch: https://www.hu17.net/2017/05/11/volunteers-wanted-cctv-syste...

matthews2··on Seeing how fast people will probe you after you get a new TLS certificate
> My main concern as a sysadmin in a company is user training and telling folks to use the non-standard ports.

Could you ship and manage SSH config files for your users?

matthews2··on Show HN: pgxman – npm for Postgres extensions
> pgxman’s automated build system creates [APT] packages

Could these packages be put in a repository online, so that they can be installed without using pgxman?

matthews2··on Show HN: Qdorks.com – Advanced Google search query composer
Firefox on iOS is just Safari in different clothes. Same engine.
matthews2··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
My car from 1997 with an analogue speedometer still has issues, because the wheel speed sensors have corroded and don't work when wet...
matthews2··on Last Chance to fix eIDAS: Secret EU law threatens Internet security
How will this be enforced? If Mozilla or Google added some hard coded certificate into a new browser version, what if a distribution like Debian patched it out? Or if a user can delete it from the certificate stores themselves?
matthews2··on React use C
> Why do embedded developers pick really resource-constrained chips, when decently powerful chips that can run Linux have become so cheap?

There are other things to consider, like power consumption, size, reliability, IO... It's a totally different class of hardware.

matthews2··on Show HN: WireHole combines WireGuard, Pi-hole, and Unbound with an easy UI
Why don’t you submit a pull request to add it?
matthews2··on WebUSB Support for RP2040
WebUSB is about a web page communicating with USB devices. So the USB device itself doesn't need to be connected to the Internet, it just needs to be plugged into a PC with a web browser (Chrome).
matthews2··on Abusing GDB features for data ingress and egress
The debug info is stored in an elf file, just like an executable. You can have them together in the same file, or you can use a tool like objcopy to make them separate.
matthews2··on U.S. Teens Spend Average of 4.8 Hours on Social Media per Day
We were just following orders!
matthews2··on Eliminating radio interference from Apple charger

matthews2··on I was kidnapped by my runaway electric car
On cars with an electronic handbrake, do they have a way to apply the brakes while the car is moving?

Also while it's not mentioned in this article, The Guardian's article says "MG Motor UK has been urgently trying to make contact with Mr Morrison so that his vehicle can be fully inspected by our engineering team." It does seem a bit suspect that he's happy to chat with journos and pull faces in front of photographers, but not to chat with MG.

matthews2··on Show HN: kproximate – A Kubernetes node autoscaler for Proxmox
What is the benefit to running multiple Kubernetes nodes on one physical Proxmox machine?
matthews2··on Minecraft Wiki has decided to leave Fandom
The RuneScape Wiki and OldSchool RuneScape Wiki left Fandom in 2018, for similar reasons: https://runescape.wiki/w/Forum:Leaving_Wikia

I think the move has been really successful. They've managed to add lots of exciting game-specific features to the wiki, like tracking requirements for a quest, or historical item prices. It also didn't seem to take long for the new wiki results to rank above the Wikia/Fandom results on search engines.

Good luck to the Minecraft wiki and its contributors!

matthews2··on Show HN: TG – Fast geometry library for C
I think that this would be incompatible with the fast cloning/reference counting feature.
matthews2··on Game devs say Unity's new install fee is a threat to everyone, including gamers
> In addition, we don’t intend to capture or count installs for QA testing.

How will this be counted? If via some telemetry running as part of the game/runtime, could an attacker pretend that your game has suddenly has a million installs and get a small developer in trouble?

matthews2··on Sucking carbon dioxide out of the sky is moving from science fiction to reality
A problem with plants is that when they die, they decompose and release the CO2 again.
matthews2··on Decoded: GNU Coreutils (2018)
The cleverness inside coreutils is mostly around choosing effective ways to interface with the kernel, e.g. using copy_file_range() instead of read()/write() to avoid having to copy the data into userspace.

It's more a software engineering endeavour instead of computer science.

matthews2··on Bountysource.com is Insolvent, do not use
Good luck to anyone relying on income from BountySource (if you exist)
matthews2··on Invariants: A Better Debugger?
> trying gdb, I asked myself if this is really what people use. The display constantly breaks and there's not a lot of stuff to quickly walk through code and visualize what it's doing

gdb has a tui that can show you multiple panes of information at a time, e.g. the source code, disassembly, and registers.

Other tools like Emacs, Eclipse, and CLion can use gdb as a backend and provide a friendlier interface on top.

matthews2··on Doing laundry on campus without a phone
WaaS (Washing as a Service)
matthews2··on i386 in Ubuntu won't die
There's work ongoing in Wine that will allow 32-bit applications and libraries to be able to call 64-bit host libraries. Hopefully this means that we won't have to mess around with multilib for much longer :)

https://www.winehq.org/announce/8.0

matthews2··on Sam Altman's cryptocurrency Worldcoin suspended in Kenya due to eye-tracking
No. The eye data is used to prevent people from claiming the sign-up bonus twice. It is independent from the key you'd use to sign transactions. Worldcoin claim that the data from the eye scan is hashed, and then thrown away.
matthews2··on Rust Cryptography Should Be Written in Rust
It depends. If your threat model involved an attacker being able to monitor your power supply (as in some kind of embedded system), they’d be able to see the real work done and separate that from the fake delay.
matthews2··on Python 3.12.0rc1
> that's how semver works in practice. > But now you can't even trust python code to work between minor versions.

Python doesn't use semantic versioning: https://docs.python.org/3/faq/general.html#how-does-the-pyth...

matthews2··on The IPv6 mess (2002)
> for human population which is going plateau soon

It's not an address per person any more, but an address per IoT device or connected sensor, which might continue to grow even if population doesn't.

matthews2··on Popcount CPU instruction (2019)
At least GCC and Clang can recognise most sane implementations of popcount and replace it with an instruction.
matthews2··on The Meaning of Monad in MonadTrans
If anyone else is wondering, it looks like HPFFP is "Haskell Programming from First Principles" :)
