matthewn··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
This gets a lot closer to what was removed from Firefox:

matthewn··on 1980 Atari 800 ad: “It will never become obsolete”
Well done. M.U.L.E. is absolutely one of the finest games of the 8-bit era, and the Atari version is superior to the C64 version. If I could spare the cash, I'd buy an old Atari and four joysticks just to have a M.U.L.E. machine.

(Luckily, MAME runs Atari M.U.L.E. beautifully under Linux.)

matthewn··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential
I replaced Evernote with Turtl and never looked back. https://turtlapp.com/
matthewn··on RSS Is Better Than Twitter
Thank you for sharing this! I had not encountered an RSS addon with 'subscribe' functionality before. This addon basically restores everything I wish had not been removed from Firefox.

(It's a shame I couldn't have found this on my own. addons.mozilla.org is unbelievably bad for discovering useful addons. It takes a thread like this to turn you on to the good stuff.)

matthewn··on RSS Is Better Than Twitter
> The "rss support" was a folder, filled with links named after the article titles.

You're describing the "live bookmarks" feature, which was only one part of the RSS functionality that was removed from Firefox. I never used live bookmarks, but I used the feed discovery and subscription functionality all the time -- only some of which can now be restored with addons.

matthewn··on “The Linux of social media” – How LiveJournal pioneered, then lost, blogging
"At the time, Six Apart was a small software company best known for authoring the blogging software TypePad."

Oh my. Is Movable Type really that forgotten by history?

matthewn··on Firefox 64 Released
> The replacement that is compatible with the new form of extension isn't able to unload the tabs, just hide them, which undoes most of the performance benefits.

I believe this information is out of date. Firefox 58 brought extension developers the ability to unload tabs: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1322485

And Totally Not Panorama takes advantage: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/basic-panoram...

matthewn··on Why We Need Difficult Books
I am 120 pages into Miss MacIntosh, My Darling because of that article. It is definitely challenging. But two or three of the (very long) sentences I've encountered are without a doubt among the most beautiful I've ever read.
matthewn··on The History of Sears Predicts Nearly Everything Amazon Is Doing (2017)
FWIW, Dealers of Lightning (by Michael Hiltzik) is a much more engaging read that tells the same story.
matthewn··on Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce
I use Turtl for this sort of thing: https://turtlapp.com/
matthewn··on Firefox removes RSS support
People who don't use RSS say it's dead, and they won't be convinced otherwise.

People who use it every day know that it's not dead at all.

Firefox's decision will not make the slightest bit of difference for either group of people.

matthewn··on Why New York City Stopped Building Subways
I'd be interested to know where you find this to be true. I have noticed that BART trains through Rockridge don't make much noise. But the track noise is so bad through Fruitvale, you can hear the trains over a mile away.
matthewn··on Craigslist takes personals sections offline in response to FOSTA
When you say "always" are you indicating you've been using the site roughly since its inception? I have, and my memory of its first 10 years or so does not match your description at all.
matthewn··on The Drugging of the American Boy (2014)
From 2014, though the AMP version linked to does not reflect this. https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a32858/drugging-of-the...
matthewn··on Stanford scholar gets six-figure settlement from James Joyce Estate (2009)
There's no hoodwinking. The grandson is the problem, and has been for a long time. I've met scholars who've been personally confronted by him at conferences. It's his personal crusade. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_James_Joyce
matthewn··on What Happened to Threadless?
Same here. I have a couple of ancient (roughly ten years old) Threadless shirts that still look good, and I have a couple of recent ones (within the last two years) that never fit the same and have not held up.

Since many (most?) designs that are on Threadless are also on Society6, and since Society6 shirts are still relatively high quality, I order from them now instead.

matthewn··on Linux desktop market share over 3%
The Thinkpad X series has been giving me a first-rate Linux laptop experience for something like a decade now.

matthewn··on My Next Mac Mini
> They're only relevant if you have a cable subscription

This is news to those of us who use DVRs to record over-the-air HD broadcasting. My homebuilt DVR is what makes NOT having a cable subscription workable.

matthewn··on What ever happened to Wordstar?
Apple ][s could run CP/M if outfitted with an expansion card sold by Microsoft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-80_SoftCard

A friend of mine had that card specifically so he could run WordStar on his Apple; I'm certain he was not alone.

matthewn··on Firefox tops Microsoft browser market share for first time
You can make the Google search widget open links in Firefox again here: Settings -> Google -> Search & Now -> Accounts & Privacy -> Open web pages in app [turn this off].
matthewn··on When Free Software Depends on Nonfree
RMS does not think this at all. RMS rejects the term "open source" outright, and is rather strident about it.
matthewn··on Larry Wall Unveils Perl 6.0.0
I was delighted to see pigdog.org appear on the front page of HN; I thought it had died years ago (and I guess it mostly did). The Pigdog Journal was a Big Deal for a certain clique of nerds/technologists in the late 90s/early 00s. (You know, when Perl was also a Big Deal.) The web was a smaller, zanier place then; for those that remember that web, pigdog.org brings a wave of nostalgia.
matthewn··on Ask HN: Any movies that changed your life?
Synecdoche, New York made me think more about why we are here and how we should spend our time than anything else I've ever seen on a screen.
matthewn··on The GNU Manifesto Turns Thirty

I see you've never read Anthony Lane's film reviews. :)
