matt-attack··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
Exactly. That’s why I’ve always said the driving is a truly AGI requiring activity. It’s not just about sensors and speed limits and feedback loops. It’s about having a true understanding for everything that’s happening around you:

Having an understanding for the density and make up of an obstacle that blew in front of you, because it was just a cardboard box. Seeing how it tumbles lightly through the wind, and forming a complete model of its mass and structure in your mind instantaneously. Recognizing that that flimsy fragment though large will do no damage and doesn’t justify a swerve.

Getting in the mind of a car in front of you, by seeing subtle hints of where the driver is looking down, and recognizing that they’re not fully paying attention. Seeing them sort of inch over because you can tell they want to change lanes, but they’re not quite there yet.

Or in this case, perhaps hearing the sounds of children playing, recognizing that it’s 3:20 PM, and that school is out, other cars, double parked as you mentioned, all screaming instantly to a human driver to be extremely cautious and kids could be jumping out from anywhere.

matt-attack··on Why AI Doesn't Think: We Need to Stop Calling It "Cognition"
It’s laughable to think that anyone in psychology has a “technical” definition of anything really. It is entirely possible that our brain works in a very, very similar way. We really have no idea. Focus focusing on the difference between meat and silicon is fruitless. The analogies between how a human learn, learns, and how an AI learns, are too significant to ignore.

Human humans have some instinctive desire to think themselves elevated. I am convinced that my internal thoughts are just a phenomenon, and the notion of “I choose to think a given thought. “ is preposterous in an of itself. Where exactly is this lofty perch from which I am controlling i?

matt-attack··on Grok Is Glitching and Spewing Misinformation About the Bondi Beach Shooting
Use before readiness? I get immense and even life changing use out of Chatbots like Grok. I agree with your first sentiment that it’s just a misunderstanding of what a chat bot should be used for.

But I disagree that they’re not “ready” for use. I’ve never once thought to upload a photo from a CURRENT event and see what it found. That’s just silly.

This is just plain user error.

matt-attack··on Anthropic acquires Bun
I truly don’t understand that one. Might be the first XKCD that has gone over my head.
matt-attack··on Satellite captures the first detailed look at a giant tsunami
Shouldn’t we have been REALLY good at modeling tsunamis? We know so much about ocean depth, water temperatures, viscosity, salinity, etc.

Is modeling waves in a body of water really not that well understood?

I would hope that now with this data we can become exceptional at it.

matt-attack··on John Giannandrea to retire from Apple
Can you explain?
matt-attack··on Flush door handles are the car industry's latest safety problem
Avoid vague terms like “size” when talking about a wheel. A car wheel all has a diameter, usually expressed in inches, and a width also usually expressed in inches.

It’s not clear to me which dimension folks are saying, has a relationship to brake size. I’m imagining width is the dimension related to wind efficiency, but I would nonetheless ask folks to use more accurate terms like wheel diameter or width.

matt-attack··on A cell so minimal that it challenges definitions of life
We can survive without a constant stream of incoming raw materials. I wouldn’t think that makes us any less alive. Nor are we a parasite on the food.
matt-attack··on Git 3.0 will use main as the default branch
Maybe they resisted because it was completely ridiculous waste of engineering resources all over the country and for absolutely no tangible reason other than white people trying to feel better about themselves.

I work in the field of film mastering (with countless product names with the word “master” in it) and luckily no one got the ridiculous idea in their head that we need to change this lingo.

Show me a single person who has a valid reason for me not calling my branch “master” or my bedroom “the master”. I honestly think this sort of ridiculing word policing is why we lost this last damned election. And if you’re somehow proud that you’ve renamed your git branches, you’re very likely a contributor to that lost election.

matt-attack··on Why don't people return their shopping carts?
If everyone returns their cart, retailers will certainly eliminate jobs. I see it as “job creator” behavior.

When I see someone returning a cart I scream “job killer!”

matt-attack··on Paramount Cuts 1,600 More Jobs as Part of Plan to Save $3B
Well two very similar companies merged. Can you imagine how they might have had A LOT of similar roles? Think departments like HR, Legal, Accounting, Finance, IT, etc.

So much duplication. You don’t need 2x those groups just because you 2x’d the company.

Additionally Paramount’s film slate is a fraction of what it was 10-20 years ago. So yes it just doesn’t take as many people to put out 1/3 of the movies each year.

matt-attack··on I was right about dishwasher pods and now I can prove it [video]
Refrigerators have become incredibly efficient in the last 40 years. I mean incredibly.

It sounds like this law is outdated.

matt-attack··on I was right about dishwasher pods and now I can prove it [video]
I never understood the requirement for having to preheat your pipes. The dishwasher has access to a hotline, and a drain. Why wouldn’t it just run the hot water for 60 seconds to ensure it has maximum heat. This would just be a software feature, and cost nothing on their part.

It seems so arcane for the operator to have to do this before running a cycle

matt-attack··on AV2 video codec delivers 30% lower bitrate than AV1, final spec due in late 2025
Improved compression also saved on storage costs. We would have to hear them state the same about storage.
matt-attack··on Starship's eleventh flight test
I sort of follow and as a liberal I struggle to find much to get worked up over. Things I see: the number of friends who now own electric cars (all Teslas) well ten years ago truly scoffed at the idea. Tesla sold 1/2 million cars THIS LAST QUARTER. Their highest ever. That’s 1/2 million gas engines not sold. I attribute all of that to one person. Full stop. Anything else is delusional.

I saw fellow liberals protesting the Tesla cafe in Los Angeles. They’re actively discouraging people from buying electric. Global warming is the more important threat to our species and these fellow liberals are ACTIVELY DISCOURAGING people from buying and owning electric cars. Truly the mind boggles.

matt-attack··on Starship's eleventh flight test
I’m a liberal and I have absolutely zero opinion about what we call various bodies of water. The hands wringing over such inconsequential monikers makes me embarrassed sometimes to be part of this party.
matt-attack··on She Sent Her iPhone to Apple. Repair Techs Uploaded Her Nudes to Facebook (2021)
I actually wonder if it’s possible to coerce someone to use Face ID. If you have it set properly it requires your eyes to be open and looking at the phone, so someone can’t use it while you’re sleeping. They would have to hold your eyes up at that point Their hand is in front of your face. And how can someone force you to look in the right direction?
matt-attack··on Just let me select text
Agree, I’m constantly taking screenshots of crazy URLs in Zoom meetings. Just a quick screenshot, and click.

Furthermore, the number of apps that make text unelectable is mind-boggling. It’s crazy to me that my common workflow now for selecting text out of an app is just a screenshot it and select right out of the image. It just always works, perfectly.

matt-attack··on My First Year Without an iPhone
I’m always blown away, when someone shows me something on their phone, let’s see a photo or something, and during the brief demo, I see an on slot of random notifications popping up. Retailers, email, promotions, etc..

Like seriously? I completely blew my mind. I think I basically have just iMessage and calendar.

matt-attack··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
Just look up his college campus debates. He would do a very unique round table debate format where he would have 20 college kids sit in a circle and each while get a minute to debate with him. It’s very wholesome and civil.
matt-attack··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
I agree. And funny enough the top comment in this thread describes Hans potential replies to this news as “violent”. It’s a form of newspeak. Peach is never violent. Come up with a thousand other words, but that’s what violence is to mean we then need another word for actual violence.
matt-attack··on iPhone Air
There’s a single and obvious reason. Bigger screen.

And if you’re going to ask why a bigger screen? It’s the same reason your laptop or desktop isn’t 7” wide.

matt-attack··on iPhone Air
It’s because they’re working on a foldable phone. And to make that work you need to phone half as thin first. This is not because they think people want thinner phones. It’s because they think people will want bigger screens and this will get them there.
matt-attack··on iPhone Air
See my other comment. It’s a necessary feature of foldable iPhones. First you get them then, then you release a foldable phone.
